I've already backed up what needs to be onto my server. I'm thinking I'll just need to DL mountain Lion when I get home, create a usb and reformat. Shouldn't take long on the mba's ssd.

Rumors are pointing to a potential sept/oct release with a very constrained supply.

I do agree that ML seems much quicker and smoother.

I might actually put it on my mid-2007 iMac after all.

I could, but a Mac mini from amazon would be the cheapest. I don't think 64GB is enough since she puts her music and movies onto her computer.

Might have to get her the CD drive as she still has numerous chinese CDs to copy over :-/

And I'm gonna upgrade it to 8gb ram since its only about 40 for the sticks.

i was waiting for someone to say this. This is what essentially will convince me to upgrade, since the features are something i dont necessarily need.

I've never upgraded on mac before. But can i just do it? Any need to run a backup on time machine or anything else before?

So here's a question. I bought my mba last year, and lion included iphoto and imovie, if I clean install to Mountain Lion I'll lose both of those for good correct? or will they re-install because they are tied to my apple id?

Yeah i think they should come with it.

I remember back in the day when Comic Life was included as well. then they started slowly chipping away at included goodies like a DVI to VGA adapter and remote.

the magic answer to my question is this: check your mac app store under purchases, and anything listed under there will be re-downloaded

is there a certain advantage to doing a clean install?

Especially if my comp is only 3 months old.

The 13" models arent weaklings by any stretch...im hoping a retina version will be pretty powerful.

dropping $3500 on a speced out 15" MDPr is just ridiculous.

That could be said for many things, cameras, cars and such. But I can't see getting any notebook w/o 16gb, when it's offered... And getting one for $2800, not so bad.

I paid $2200 for my retina MBP, it has 8 gigs of RAM. My '11 MBP had 16. 50% less RAM makes no difference in usability.

The solid state hard drive is what makes the difference. Everything FLIES on this machine.

For photos/video I wouldn't do anything less than max out my ram. Especially these don't have the option of an upgrade after the fact.

^this is the big kicker when spec'ing out the machine. When I bought my mba I went full out on options knowing that nothing can be changed afterwards. This machine is still ridiculously fast, might only be a year old but I'm looking forward to another 5 or so years of it.

OWC has been coming out with some solutions for the MBA...they just announced the 2012 flash memory upgrades. And they have upgrades for the prior model MBAs as well, check em out.

yes I know, its just a hard bite to swallow.

Plus I would rather have the 13" screen. I get on a 15" now and they seem enormous. The 13" is much nicer to walk around the house or chill on the couch with. Easier to travel with and if I need more screen...27" TB display...done.

Well I got the new OS X anyway, fingers crossed it's better than Lion. First impressions is, it's a little slow, but it might have just been all the processes opening up. Other than that, I like it. I just miss my 4-finger swipe up that would clear all open windows.

Something to note though:

The saying: Once you go Mac you never go back.

I dont know if thats the case with me. Dont get me wrong that i love my mac, but i'm not one to leave Windows out of the question when comes the time I need a new computer in 4+ years.

Ohh and with all the hype I expected this computer to be faster

Doesn't seem unreasonable. Post a screenshot of the process view. There is a lot of low level shit that runs, it adds up fast.

Hmm... my 13" Macbook Unibody Aluminum (2008) can fetch about $500... wonder if I should upgrade to an Air... or just throw in an SSD.
