The restore went off without a hitch...everything seems to work...and no more freaking beach balls....looks like I can eek a little more life out of this thing.

Real test will be ingesting and editing the D800 files.

definitely starting to feel the lack of speed again. Not nearly as bad as when the drive was going...but ugh, if I didn't have a newer mbp...this thing would do no good. Will wait and see what the next iMac announcement brings.

Why not use LR on your Mac, it allows you to install on two different computers and comes with PC and Mac version on same DVD? Lightroom is half the price than when first released. You can use something free like Picasa 3.

Not IMO, it's free and that was the whole point in bringing up what people have to pay for software when they don't want to pay for it.

Thinking about picking up a Time Capsule, anyone know of any anticipated spec changes or upgrades in the not too distant future? I'm thinking in sept at the iphone/ipod event TC may play a bigger role as itunes server etc. I want to back up my mba in preparation for the mountain lion upgrade and figured this would be a super easy way to do it. The hd in this is larger than any of my externals so I either need to use 3 drives, or buy a drive closure for a 500gb disk I have lying around. or buy a tc. decisions......

Unless you need the router portion of it (which is excellent btw) you may just want to pick up a cheap 1 TB USB drive for backups and wait.

I have a air port extreme and love and you can hook a HD into that if you want.

No need for the router functions. I have a brand new 500gb wd black drive sitting in a drawer that was replaced under warranty. I just need an enclosure, wish thunderbolt ones were affordable, or USB3->thunderbolt dongles were out. Also I hate the fact that 3.5" drives require being plugged into a wall outlet too. Anyone using carbon copy cloner for backups? I understand that will let me do incremental backups to a networked share.

Earlier this week I read an article on Engadget that eluded to some older Macbook Pro's may not be supported by Mountain Lion. Mostly because of 32bit video drivers that they aren't going to convert to 64bit drivers.

I hope that my late 2007 model MBP is supported. I really don't want to have to buy a new laptop right now. I was hoping I could get another year out of this machine as it still runs great.

http://osxdaily.com/2012/02/16/os-x-...-requirements/
Macs that will support OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion

As usual, the newer the Mac the better:

MacBook Pro – 13″ from mid 2009 or later, 15″ from late 2007 and newer, 17″ from late 2007 and newer
MacBook Air – late 2008 and newer
iMac – models from mid 2007 and newer
MacBook – 13″ aluminum from 2008, 13″ from 2009 and newer
Mac Mini – early 2009 and newer
Mac Pro – early 2008 models and newer
XServe – early 2009 models and newer

Macs that are NOT expected to support OS X Mountain Lion

Older Macs and those with weaker GPU’s will likely be left behind:

Anything with an Intel GMA 950 or x3100 integrated graphics card
Anything with an ATI Radeon X1600
MacBook models released prior to 2008
Mac Mini released prior to 2007
iMac models released prior to 2007
Original MacBook Air

Can you use TC as a true itunes server? (Without having to have Itunes opened up on a computer?)

I'm going through the same thing right now, do I get TC or Airport Extreme and add in external hard drives.

There was some speculation last year that tc could would become a hub of sorts for media, such that your iTunes library would be hosted on it which would free up all your hd space on each computer. iTunes match may have changed that. I'm getting hesitant to order one because there hasn't be a spec bump in over a year with mountain lion and ios6 I'm wondering if they will position it as a hub. Guess I'll have to wait until the iPod keynote before pulling the trigger.

Now I just need to wrap my head around a better way to store my image catalog and I'll be a happy camper.

That's the info that I originally was happy to see because that includes my MBP, but newer articles are saying otherwise and may exclude some of those.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/11/a...mountain-lion/

Apple is well-known for wanting a close spread in hardware requirements with OS X upgrades, having dropped PowerPC like a hot potato when Snow Leopard arrived just three years after the Intel switch. Whether or not you're a fan of that policy, it's certainly carrying forward with Mountain Lion. When the newly-finished OS hits the Mac App Store, it will rule out the very first wave of 64-bit Macs: certain MacBook Pros, Mac Pros and other early systems will be denied a taste of 10.8. Some sleuthing from Ars Technica suggests that it's a matter of graphics drivers rather than capriciousness on Apple's part, as the Macs excluded from the mix are using 32-bit drivers that won't play nicely with Mountain Lion's 64-bit Utopia short of a wide-scale conversion effort. It's little consolation to those who dropped a pretty penny on certain Macs just a few years ago. That said, Apple is still going the extra mile to support some systems -- if you're reading this on an original aluminum iMac, you're sitting pretty.

As the IT/AV guy I deal with all the hardware around here. The failure rate is pretty much the same between Dell and the Mac's (laptops included).

Since I get to choose what sits on my desk, I picked the Dell. But only because I get to use the Dell ST2220L 21.5-inch Wide LED Flat Panel Monitor on an Ergotron LX desk mount swing arm. The Mac's are nice, but I really only use them for their reflective qualities, so I can check my look.

I wasn't going to do it just for that reason. Was looking to buy the newer model because I'd like to have something faster, but it's not a necessity. And if I was to upgrade, I'd rather upgrade at the point when I can't update my current machine any longer. To have a laptop last 5 years ain't that bad considering how fast technology changes.

A nice new feature many MacBook users are noticing in Mountain Lion- when using Dictation, the MacBook’s fan is briefly turned off in order to hear the user clearly.

I've never even heard my fans kick in on the new rMacbook Pro. My '11 MBP would kick in every five minutes.

Jealous you have Mountain Lion, I applied for the free upgrade since I purchased this last month, still haven't gotten an email.

15 just seems too large to me...I want the 13...at some point...im gonna need it. Wife wont want to hear that.

But I actually might HAVE to spend the money just for the tax write off.

But to me...13" retina + 27" thunderbolt display = WIN

I'll be getting my first Mac soon. Well not for me but for my mom. Gonna get her a Mac mini since all she does is surf the net and check email and look at pictures. She doesn't do real estate anymore so she doesn't need her specialized software anymore. I figured since she takes so many pics with her iPhone that It would be better if her computer was a Mac for better compatibility. And that her pics will auto backup via iCloud.

Her current computer is slow as balls, can't even load webpages smoothly, or watch Hulu (it's a 10+ yr old dell pc)

If she doesn't like it, then I'll just take it and use it.

Woo! Can't wait to install Mountain Lion when I get home. Is it a lot like Lion? I really hated Lion, felt like they tried to incorporate too many mobile options onto a computer, meaning the bad features.

Then youre going to hate ML most likely.

Where I like it a lot...Ive been using it for a few hours now, and I'm enjoying the upgrades.

My only gripe is they changed the battery display in the menu bar...no it will only show the icon...or the icon with percentage...if you want the actual time left, you have to click on it. That is stupid to me, I always had time displaying with the icon.

They basically created an extra step for no reason.
