Android: Phone News and Discussion Thread
damn that really sucks with your experience with samsung
luckily I've had no problems with my phone, and glad I dont since their customer service doesnt seem so great
They're the manufacturer how do they not have extra components laying around, especially at a repair facility?

I guess more leaks will follow in the next couple of days. I'm hearing it'll be Verizon only though.

^I hope so. Really tempted in picking up a Galaxy S II but the recent Gingerbread builds Samsung has been pushing have been getting faster and faster so its making the wait a lot more bearable. For now, I'm back on MIUI cause CM7 was eating my battery with the RIL bug and latest stock Samsung Gingerbread build doesn't have adhoc which I use quite a lot.

One of the rumors I heard was November 3rd for the release date, but
Along with that rumor was rumors that it will be in both touchscreen only and keyboard varieties. Take that with a grain of salt though.
And my Nexus S will be back in my hands no later then 10:30 tomorrow morning

you notice from the pic that they got rid of our buttons. Everything is on the screen now. That'll be interesting how you get the menu up to go home. I wouldnt mind a physical home button, unless those touch buttons are always there? I'm not sure how they work in honeycomb, but i'm guessing its something similar
Even Andy Rubin is building some hype for Ice Cream Sandwich:

When we launched Android in 2007 we asked some kids if they had a magic phone, what would it do? At the end one of the kids was drawing Ice Cream. Coincidence?
Can. Not. Wait.
And speedemon - Yes, the NS does have capacitive buttons.
Teaser still of the Prime:

And I have my new NS!!!! I guess you have to speak to the right people and say the right things *cough*possiblearticleongizmodo*cough* to get what you want out of them.

- 4.5-5.65 inch curved glass display with Super AMOLED HD screen that supports a 720p HD resolution of 1280 X 720 pixels.
- A sleek shell with edge-to-edge glass and very minimal bezel and metallic chrome trim
- 5-megapixel camera, capable of 1080p HD, thanks to its vastly improved image sensor
- Dual-core Texas Instruments 1.5 GHz CPU
- 1 GB of dual channel RAM
- 8.8mm thin
It won't have any buttons because it'll run Ice Cream Sandwich which is a unification of Honeycomb and Gingerbread plus some other additional unannounced features. Also, since this is a Nexus phone, it'll get updates before all the other phones. As far as which carrier, Verizon is for sure at the moment. Its a maybe to the others but more than likely.
Here's what ICS might look like running on a Nexus S:

Supposedly, Google wiped his phone before XDA got a dump of the image so its most likely real but it might be an early build as well. We'll find out soon enough.
it didnt have the hardware specs like the new phones coming out at the time and yet it was still faster. Numbers dont always tell the truth. I think right now, well maybe before the SG2, the NS was the best phone out of any android phone. Its the best phone I've had, I've played with quite a few phones, including atix, SG1, iphones (all of them) and other android phones. None of them are like the NS.
Ohh and civicdrvr, that NPrime, didnt have capacitive buttons, look again, its on the screen

What are those three pins in the pic? Some kind of connection to something?

They look like capacitive buttons to me - but Ive been wrong in the past I fully intend to be wrong in the future

Those buttons are brighter then the NS buttons though, which I like.

That red line shows the actual screen, you can see even in the pic you posted, a change in the black level below the "buttons" (look on the right side of your pic). That's where the screen ends and the bezel begins. Also, that's why the stats on the screen show the size as 1184x720...it's actually a 1280x720 screen, but 96 pixels of it are reserved for the on-screen buttons.
"A new batch of rumored specs have surfaced over on GSM Arena, and these seem to be more in line with what we'd expect of a new Nexus. According to an anonymous Google employee, that 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD display mentioned above is just about the only spec to make the final cut. The processor, however, is more likely to be a dual-core 1.5GHz Exynos (that's right) with an accompanying dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP2 graphics chip. That rear facing camera? Try 8 megapixels with a newly beefed up sensor. The handset should also ship with a girthy 2,050mAh battery fully capable of juicing this apparent LTE / CDMA / GSM Android monster."

As of now, Im a bit confused as to what the debate is truly about. Even if that part of the screen can be used to display things other then the typical buttons, it's still capacitive. Or did they come up with a different technology for it? (actual question, not trying to be an ass)
They are definitely capacitive (no debate there) but I guess the difference would be if they are part of the screen or not. I wasn't aware Samsung has been using the an "extension" of the screen for the buttons. In any case, I CAN'T FREAKING WAIT!
A lot of prime related leaks just happened the past couple of hours. Can't post links cause I'm on my phone. Samsung and Google pushed back the release date probably out of respect for Steve Jobs. Ill try to post links to pics and vids when I get onto a laptop unless someone else does it.
Announcement delayed:
Source: http://androidandme.com/2011/10/news...-announcement/
Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.
Samsung and Google have decided to postpone the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event during the CTIA in San Diego, previously scheduled for Oct. 11. Under the current circumstances, both parties have agreed that this is not the appropriate time for the announcement of a new product. We would ask for the understanding of our clients and media for any inconvenience caused. We will announce a new date and venue in due course.
They probably had a few jabs against Apple, as they usually do, and decided it was tasteless after his death so they're probably revising their announcement. They haven't said when they will announce it but October 27th seems to be the release date of the device so sometime before then?
