Engadget has some crappy pics of Honeycomb from the Motorola Tablet that Andy Rubin is using to demo some new features from Google:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/06/m...t-d-dive-into/
It almost looks like a desktop OS in some of the blurry shots.

1. Google is helping them with this phone so it should get the future updates before the other phones just like the Nexus One.
2. GPS is probably fixed in this version of the phone. Something that they can't fix in the current Galaxy S lines because of the way the hardware was made even though Samsung won't admit to it. (Although, its really not that bad depending on what you need it for, in my opinion.)
3. Gingerbread is probably now optimized for the Hummingbird processor. Who knows if the US Galaxy S will ever see Gingerbread and counting on Samsung, they have a bad track record at updates. The XDA people will probably make one but an official one will be hard to come by considering they still haven't even gotten Froyo out like HTC has.
4. It has a front facing camera (The international versions have it and while I rarely use this feature, if you're going to pay the same price for a phone, might as well have it included already.)
5. The iNAND that they're using will be lag-free unlike the current NAND they're using with the current Galaxy phones regardless of whether or not Samsung sticks to RFS.
6. It has NFC, something we're not sure if other Android phones are capable of having without a hardware update. It may not be well used in the US yet but at least you'll be future proofing yourself by getting one with it.
That's all I can think of right now but I'm sure there will be more as the time goes by. But if you do have the chance to swap, you should definitely do it.

The new Google Maps is looking nice
Google Maps for Mobile 5 unveiled, adds dynamic map drawing and offline mode
By Ross Miller posted Dec 6th 2010 10:59PM
Why look at static images when you can get a more 3D view of the urban scene? Google's Maps for Mobile 5 just got previewed on stage by Andy Rubin at D: Dive Into Mobile -- with a prototype Motorola Honeycomb tablet, no less! The biggest visual change is dynamic map drawing: vectors instead of flat images that scale without render hiccups and will show the buildings fleshed out for over 100 cities -- we gotta say, it looks great. Even more fun is that you can now use two fingers to tilt and rotate around the map (in addition to moving and pinch-to-zoom, of course). We've been told the storage for these vectors is much smaller than the current images, which brings us to... offline caching. Maps will keep on file the locations that you go to (and search) most often, and it'll be able to reroute while offline in Navigation. You'll still need a connection for altering the route altogether -- sorry, subway-hoppers -- but once you go, even if you stray, you'll still be rerouted back on track.
Most modern Android phones from the original Droid onward should be able to enjoy most if not all the new features, depending on hardware capabilities (3D rendering) and "distinct multitouch" hardware support -- the Nexus One, interestingly enough, supports vector maps but not the rotate functionality because it lacks the latter multitouch requirements. Google sent us a list of devices that support 100 percent of 5.0's features, which you can find after the break. The update is due out in the "coming days," according to Rubin. Great way to kick off Nexus S' launch, then.

T-Mobile is there to offer the smartphone for $199 (Read: $200), with a two year contract. Users, who are interested in using AT&T, will have to pay the full phone price. It happens to be $530. Also, the term “unlocked” is going to be misleading in Nexus S’s case. The smartphone can’t be used on Verizon or Sprint’s network because it doesn’t have the compatible Antenna.
Info came from this article...
http://www.technews.org/whats-so-hot...le-nexus-s.htm
NOTE: Also sounds like Sprint was going to use the curved OLED screen, but was unable to make the deal work with Samsung... Google grabbed the screen and rolled it on their Nexus S.

I got my GPS fixed yesterday, Froyo is pretty cool . And lol, I had no idea Froyo was frozen yogurt either, I always thought it was weird that they went with food names except that one.

Is the Nexus S Also Coming to Sprint and Verizon?
Posted by: Benjamin Rubenstein
December 7, 2010
Many Android lovers patiently awaited the arrival of the Nexus One on Sprint and Verizon. Unfortunately, it never ended up happening. From what I gather, Google would have liked a CDMA version to have been produced, but with CDMA carriers releasing so many other powerful devices at the time, there was just no room for Google's first developer phone. This begs the question--is the Nexus S scheduled to make a CDMA appearance here in the United States? After all, it's made by Samsung--the same company that made sure to release its Galaxy S line on both GSM and CDMA carriers.
It could be that I'm just reading into things, but after skimming through the Nexus S Challenge contest rules, I noticed something a bit odd. If you were telling someone that a device was only compatible with GSM networks, you'd say that straight out--wouldn't you? However, that's not what Google does when talking about the newly released Nexus S. Here's what the contest rules state under the PRIZES section:
"The currently available Nexus S is a GSM device and is not compatible with CDMA networks such as Verizon and Sprint."
Again... I could be reading way too much in to this. Perhaps whoever wrote up the rules just chose an interesting way of saying that they don't support Sprint or Verizon. On the other hand, maybe there will be a CDMA version of the Nexus S and Google would, therefore, be lying if they said that the Nexus S is only a GSM device. Anyone care to share their thoughts?

HTC confirms Desire HD Android 2.3 update?

HTC Desire HD - Android 2.3 on the way?
<>
TechRadar contacted HTC earlier today about the recently announced Android 2.3 update and whether or not it will be coming to its flagship phone: the HTC Desire HD.
Although HTC didn't namecheck the phone, it did confirm that a number of its handsets will be given the update.
Be excited
In a statement, a spokesperson for HTC explained: "We are excited about the OS update coming for Android, and while HTC will definitely have some phones running this OS, we do not have a specific timeframe for new phones or updates at this time. Please stay tuned for more details."
While "some phones" is as flimsy an answer you are likely to get, it does confirm that the update will be coming to handsets already in existence.
At the moment, the HTC Desire HD is the flagship phone from the Taiwanese company so we're pinning our bets on this.
However, the Desire Z and Desire will probably get some Android 2.3 loving, too.

For those wanting the new Gingerbread keyboard:
Source: http://www.droid-life.com/2010/12/06...ooted-devices/
It should work for most devices with Froyo. I personally haven't tried it myself because I'm happy with smart keyboard pro but the pics of the keyboard looks sleek. I may just replace my stock Android keyboard just for kicks. lol.

What a day it has been! We finally have our 2.3 Gingerbread release and everyone is happier than a boy on Christmas morning.
While all this joy is in the air, Droid-Life has been exclusively gifted with a Gingerbread Keyboard Port! Thanks to Peter Alfonso of Bugless Beast, we are sitting on some 2.3 goodness. So after the jump, we will have instructions and the ‘how to’ on getting this on your phone!
In the subject I mentioned this is for rooted devices only. Why? Because stock phones don’t have the rights to install .libs. Sorry non-roots! But hey, time to start looking into the subject of rooting?
Update: Check out our hands-on of the new Gingerbread keyboard!
Instructions:
*MAKE A BACKUP FIRST!
*Should work on ALL rooted 2.2 Android devices.
*Droid X and 2 users, see note after instructions. (Some DX users are seeing miniature versions. Again, MAKE A BACKUP.)
*Won’t work on 2.1. You need the newest Voice Search app from the market.
*Good idea to make a back up of your LatinIME.apk from your /system/app folder in case something goes wrong.
1. Download .zip file HERE (This is the new fixed version.)
2. Place on root of SD Card and boot into Recovery.
3. Install .zip as you would themes etc.
4. Reboot and select “Android Keyboard” under Input Method and you are good to go.
*Note* – DX users, “In Clockwork, go to mounts and storage>mount system and then back to install .zip from sd card”.
I hope you all enjoy everyone! Anyone wanna take a gander at what else is next from 2.3?

Running a Gingerbread theme on my phone. Looks pretty nice I must say. All that's missing is the whole Android Vanilla feel but LauncherPro will do. Having issues with my main texts being gray instead of black but not sure what's causing it. Waiting for someone to hack the battery percentage into it as well. For now I'll have to use Battstat:

The Desire HD is basically the GSM version of the EVO 4G. It has the European bands so it won't work on AT&T's or T-Mobile's 3G network. It will get EDGE, however, and you'll be able to make phone calls just fine. Vodafone Australia is selling a version with AT&T's 850 3G band. Not sure if it has 1900. If it only has 850, then you'll get 3G in certain areas. If it has both, then it will get 3G everywhere its available. Both European and Australian version will only work on EDGE with T-Mobile because T-Mobile requires both 1700 and 2100 3G bands to be on the phone for their 3G.

Hey where do you go to get some nice wallpapers for your galaxy S? I read that dark colored wallpapers saves batteries.
General "android wallpapers" in google shows up decent ones.

Yes for darker colors = less battery use for Super AMOLED screens. Because black colors = LED off. And the great thing about it too is that they pop out because of the contrast so its a win win. I get mine from XDA and a compiled wallpaper site by an XDA member:

Make sure you click on the magnifying glass in picasa to get the full original wallpaper screen. The wallpapers should also fit all other devices with the same res as the Galaxy S. (EVO, Nexus One, etc.)

XDA finally fixed the menu text issue and fixed the small battery percentage. Decided to put both of them together and it looks awesome now!
Oh and XDA fixed my GPS! They did a kernel tweak thats allowing me to pick up really low SNR signals on my GPS. Now its locking perfectly indoors when I couldn't get a lock before. Samsung should hire those people because they don't know how to write software to save their lives. lol.

The new version of ADW is really nice, I was running it before I went to Froyo (and I paid for LP too). At least in my case it was smoother then LP, I didn't get the laggy helicopter screen view, smoother home rotation (although I generally disable that), and just ran a little smoother all around. LP is still great though. Oh, and I like that you can change the color/transparency of the app drawer background.

There's a bunch of home replacements. LauncherPro has been my main choice for the time being, mainly for the Calendar and the Friends Widget in the Pro version. ADW is another good one as well and I was using that for a while when I had my Ion. Each one has their different advantages. Netfront is a new one as well:

Haven't tried it yet but there's a few to choose from.
KiteUI is another one in development (link):

And there's plenty more. The best place to find them is at XDA since that's where most of them originate. AppBrain also helps with that since its a lot easier to navigate.

Man I love these different REAL UI's for the Android. Unlike iPhone where different UI is just an illusion when in reality, nothing was changed. LP is actually pretty smooth for me.
BTW, I just did the PSX emulator. I can't believe the Galaxy S can handle PSX games. Everything you need to know is from this youtube video. Crappy video nonetheless but it got me up and running. Tested Final Fantasy 7 and it works fine. Gran Turismo 2 didn't work though Don't know if it's the ROM or the emulator.
