Android: Phone News and Discussion Thread
I'm an attorney. I was posting about my personal experience, and debunking the misconception that the Note 2 is too big for daily use for people (like myself) who wear fitted clothing. Back on Topic: For those with the Nexus 4 on 4.1.2, is the multi-view useful? I was an idiot and rooted out of the box (on 4.1.1 and didn't upgrade first) and I think if I flash the upgrade, I have to wipe/factory reset.

@CG: Yeah, I already use titanium back up, but I don't think there's a way to save all the text widgets I set up.
For the Note 2 (GSIII) there's an all in one Toolkit... It looks like the Donate Version has the ability to put on 4.1.2 for you, so guess I'll be donating a few bucks and trying it out.
One of my friends (big time Apple head) is still arguing with me that the Note 2 is too big for daily use - his biggest arguments are: you can't use it one handed, and it won't fit in an average person's pocket.

p.s. You know that you now have to surprise your wife with awesome shiny stuff too
-------
Looks like the phone I left behind for the Nexus 4 is finally maybe possibly getting 4.0 this month.... too late, muchachos!

Any ways, I decided not to do any modding on this phone since its AOSP and not some bloated ROM. I've had enough of "perfecting" the phone on the original Galaxy S that I'm just gonna save myself the headache and not flash Evey week.
thats too big, honestly i would never go bigger than my GS3. Just hoping theres a good phone at this size in the future. Otherwise i'll be forced too... unless i go iPhone
Hey mike, I remember a long time ago you posted something about using wifi and cellular data to make the internet on your phone a lot faster. What was that again?? I wanna use it.

For anyone wanting T-Mobile SIM or Micro SIM cards, they are free right now:

http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/p...Activation-Kit
It's good for people just wanting new cards, or for future use to unlock phones, or for practicing sim cutting, or just because you like to collect SIM cards to build a castle out of.
mdk, did your wife happen to also get you any accessories for the N4 (assuming she got it from the store)? Curious to see whether T-Mobile stores have any sort of accessories for it.

Hmmmm this is kinda odd, I woke up, reached for my Galaxy Nexus which was plugged in, and pressed the power button and it didn't wake up, so I long pressed it and nothing. Completely dead. Took out the battery and put it back in, long press and it rebooted. This has never happened before, hope it's not a sign of something

i dont think i will carry anything bigger than the note/note2....
amazingly the note2's screen is bigger than the note but the overall phone is smaller and lighter....i would trade mine in for the note2 anyday
the wifey's contract is almost up and am thinking of getting her the Nexus 4 and slowly migrating over to a Virgin Mobil/Boost and being without a contract and unlimited everything for like 40 or 50 bucks

So I finally bit the bullet and got a GN2.
I originally wanted it but I tried waiting for the Nexus 4, to no avail. Needless to say, coming from the original Evo 4g, I can't wait to get my hands on this thing.
So my question is, do you guys suggest using any cases or screen protectors? Is this thing real susceptible to scratches or anything like that?

So looking at mine, i have this small crack thing on the back case. I've dropped my phone a few times. On carpet but it hit stuff on the way down.
As for the screen I have the faintest scratch going from the home button to a ltl on the screen. Yes the home button, I honestly have no clue what did that. But its so faint that if I look for it I wont see it all the time, cant really feel it with my nails either, running over it.
But I still dont have a case or screen protector. My phone is the only thing that sits in my pocket, no other objects go with it, so i dont see much of a point for the screen protector. even though i have a slight mark lol. I hate the feeling.
Case, i dont like the bulk haha. I may invest in one later though cause I want this thing to last and I dont drop it much, but I've done it and i dont want it to crack.
It really depends on how well you take care of phones ultimately.

From the sound of it, you had what they call a sleep of death (SOD). Could be due to a couple of issues. The first and most common reason is the kernel. If you're using a custom kernel or you changed some kernel setting, under clocked, undervolted, etc. In other words, the kernel wasn't 100% stable. The other issues could be the ROM you're using or apps. Either of those could cause it most likely triggering a kernel panic and the phone just shuts off resulting into the SOD. Next time it happens pull the /proc/kmsg file and open it up in notepad. It'll tell you the last few seconds before the SOD. If you're using a custom kernel send it to the dev. Same with the ROM. You can maybe pinpoint to what caused it there.
thanks for the info....I agree. I'm pretty paranoid about scratches, so I'll likely be wrapping this thing up in the thinnest case I can find.
I don't usually drop phones, but this is a whole new form factor, so it'll take some getting used to. Hope I don't drop it....

came across this lockscreen, seems to look really cool and full of customizations and themes available on the market. Gonna try it out!

^^^ Think they are off GSM....Sprint recently bought VM and Sprint already owns Boost LOL....
I am one of the PMO's for the conversion project....I can get the unlimited sprint plan for like $50 but again you are locked in a 2 year contract....I want to try VM for a month with respect to service and data speeds before I confirm my decision...
I do use more than 100 minutes a month
....the Sprint friends and family plan that I mentioned has like unlimited everything for $45 + tax...the only deal with that is, you cant have a family plan, so the wife and I will have to be on separate accounts

I'm using the Sammy Flip cover case - bought one at the ATT store that came with two (White and Orange). But I'm waiting for Urban Armor Gear to release their Note 2 case (I have the white one for the Galaxy S3). It does add considerable bulk though, and its meant more to be a full protection case.
If you want to protect it from scratches but not get a bulky case, then you can try skins: http://www.skinomi.com/sagano2.html
I've used Skinomi products on my tablets (Transformer Prime/Infinity) and they're pretty ok. If you're not good at putting on protectors, then it may be worth it to take it to one of those kiosks and pay them a couple bucks to put it on for you.
hmmm maybe i'll look into cases for my gs3
do you guys recommend skins or cases??
Any brands too look at?? I dont know anything about cases or which brand is good or not haha
edit: I forgot I got one of those free flip cases, but its gonna be another month before that arrives. I may just wait for that. I got the orange color too lol, they were out of my blue ones. And it was that green or pink...

I always buy cheap cases. I just don't want the phone to slide around. Hopefully I can find another Game Boy rubber case like the one I have for my iPhone 4 that was less than $10 on Amazon shipped.

As I mentioned I do need to do some research before making the switch....hate contracts....between 2 lines am paying like 150 with ATT after my discount

ATT do have great data speeds though
Check out Solavei as an alternative to the T-Mobile Prepaid plan. They use the same towers as T-Mobile and offer unlimited minutes/text/web for about the same price. Cap is supposedly at 4 GB:

US Prepaid Options
This thread is intended to give people a “one stop shop “ for GSM prepaid carriers to use with the Nexus 4 and to serve as a general discussion thread about prepaid services here in the US. I don’t know all the answers, but I will try to update the OP as new info comes in.
Prepaid services will be divided into two categories. Those operating on the AT&T spectrum and those operating on the T-mobile spectrum.
Listed are some of the most popular Prepaid Services and a short bio of each.
Here is a complete list of MVNO network operators in the US.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...work_operators
Talk: Phone calls Text: SMS & MMS Data: HSPA(+) speeds depending on area or otherwise noted
AT&T spectrum:
AT&T Go Phone Prepaid Wireless
http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/pla...bid=EwrHuWhIDs
Best Deal : $65 + tax Unlim Talk&Text , 1gb data.
Simcard : Free. In store only (?)
Throttle: ?. After 1gb you would need to buy new prepaid plan for more data.
Customer Service: In store/ phone/ email *Good
Pros: Good coverage , better support, preferred network use Cons: Too expensive, pittance of data. Limited to HSPA. HSPA+ not provisioned to go phone users.
Straight Talk Wireless AT&T
https://www.straighttalk.com/secure/ServicePlans
Best Deal : $45 + tax/ Unlim Talk, Text, Data*
Sim card: Microsim around 14.99/Free shipping
Throttled Data: YES. AT&T throttles users of Straight Talk if use is above normal, which some define as >100mb/day or 2gb/mos. There are ill defined lines of what qualifies someone for throttling, but it does occur if use is excessive, and in some cases not. Some have had success by calling/opening a ticket on FB and having them “reprovisioning” their account.
Customer Service: Phone/ Email/ Social Media (Fb) *Fair
(Tip: Try this phone number first: 1-888-251-8164)
Pros: Cheapest AT&T prepaid service, Good Coverage on AT&T Network. Best deal if you can use wifi frequently.
Cons: Aggressive throttling for some users, Poor Customer Support
Black Wireless/H20
http://blackwireless.com/Plans.aspx
https://www.h2owirelessnow.com/pageC...ans&category=W

There are many other prepaid services on AT&T network, most offering Unlim Talk/Text and 1-2gb HSPA data for $50-60/mos. See below for complete list:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...work_operators

I finally switched to the mobile share plan from the family plan.
For 4 lines unlimited talk/text and 6GB of data. Without taxes and with my discount, it's going to run about $200 a month. Ridiculous still.
But the old plan was family 2100 (16K rollover minutes) $85, unlimited text $30, $35 dataplan for me and $60 for the other phones), another $30 for add-a-line, and $5 for Smart Limits for a total of $245 without taxes.

Thats what my ROM on the GS3 is. I went with a touchwiz ROM, so I get the neat touchwiz features, but i ditched the launcher, the only thing i dont like about touchwiz.
I rooted my dads phone and put on a fully stock ROM, thats just rooted and add the tethering mod that bypasses tmobiles things to stop it. So now he can tether his ipad. Hes happy with it, tethering was the most important feature he wanted, its why he had me root and find a way to get it
