The replay shows no one. The ball fell into the unmaned scoreboard area.

Actually, I don't cheer for the Blue Jays nor any -ian sports team (for evidence, refer to the other sports threads like NHL and NBA)...

I stick to my Chicago roots and cheer for Windy City teams only.

Retire on a ball hit by a cheater that didn't even move him into first place, just into #2 all time (and he isn't going to ever get to #1)? Not likely.

Some fool paid 3 million for McGwire's 70th HR ball, so I don't see a problem someone paying that much for Bond's 2nd place ball especially in the Bay Area.

And if that fool tried to sell McGwire's ball now? 3 cents.

Maybe the Cheat's ball will fetch up to 5 digits. But, no way in the millions. I'd say over/under $20K.

I read in TSN that he was being dangled for trade bait. Let's see how he is.

So far he has been untouchable as far as trade bait. I don't think there is a team out there that wouldn't wouldn't give up anyone on the block for him, basically straight up. The Mets wouldn't give him up for Manny, Dontrelle, or Zito. Apparently he is a no joke, future all-star, but time will tell.

I read he started rough and was batting .290 in the minors. How was he in the minors per your sources?

He is starting a little slow in 06. He is right now batting .291 with 4 HR's and 19 RBI's and 8 SB's in 50 games, but in 05 he played 48 games in AA and he batted .337 with 4 HR's, 24 RBI's and 11 SB's. But more importantly, in spring training (55 at bats) he batted .327 with 7 RBI's, 10 runs, 1 HR and 2 SB's.

Milledge probably isn't going to go anywhere, but anytime a big trade is mentioned w/ the Mets his name always comes up... Like when there were Manny Ramirez rumors...

But the Red Sox said that Hanley Ramirez was untouchable, and look where he is now

There always seems to be a contradiction of sorts when it comes to big-time prospects/rookies. The Mets have the mindset and payroll to win NOW, not the future. They have a great core of experienced players (Pedro, Glavine, Delgado, Floyd, Beltran, Wagner, LoDuca, etc.) integrated with some of the best young talent in the game (Wright, Reyes, etc.). SO WHAT ARE THEY WAITING FOR. Milledge is a great, albeit unproven talent. Remember Ruben Mateo? Josh Hamilton? Carlos Pena? All can't-miss prospects who didn't pan out.

So if the likes of Billy Beane wants Milledge in exhange for the likes of a proven commodity like Barry Zito, how can Omar not pull the trigger? How can he rationalize this by saying, "We want to keep Milledge and build for the future." It doesn't make sense. Where's the urgency? The Mets mentality should be to win NOW. If Zito bolsters the opportunity for the Mets to make the playoffs and succeed in the postseason, it's a no-brainer to get him. For the most part, baseball is no longer a value-oriented, wait-and-see game. It mostly revolves around large market teams bringing in an endless stream of hired guns. The Mets have actively engaged in this high-risk, high-reward style for years. So why stop now?

The Mets' pitching staff is not getting any younger. How much does Glavine and Pedro have in the tank? Even assuming that they will perform at high levels at season's end (let alone 2007 and beyond) is dangerous. They need another frontline starter.

You have a point, but I somewhat disagree with what you say the Mets need. The Mets do not need a Zito or Willis. They have a Zito and Willis already with Pedro and Glavine. True, they are getting old, but Glavine has been nasty since last years all-star break when he changed his delivery and Pedro isn't human. They need an inning eater for the number 3 or 4 spot in the rotation. A guy like Benson wouldn't be so bad to be honest. I love the El Duque pickup, what 3 pitchers are going to give you more playoff experiance than Glavine, Pedro and the Duke?

As geared to win now as the Mets are, they are also geared for the future. Beltran just turned 29, Nady is only 27. Wright, Reyes, Milledge and Mike Pelfrey are all under 24. They have another kid named Gomez who isn't near ready, but apparently puts Milledge to shame. They don't want a repeat of the Kazmir deal and would rather take the chance with Millege. Maybe he will turn out like Wright did

It's official Clemens rejoins the Astros

Rocket re-launch: Clemens rejoins Astros

ESPN.com news services

HOUSTON -- Roger Clemens is coming out of retirement for the third time, agreeing to a $22 million contract to pitch for the Houston Astros for the rest of 2006.

The 43-year-old Clemens, who will be entering his 23rd major league season, is agreeing first to a minor league contract that pays $322,000 over the five-month minor league season, and his first start is likely to be June 6 at Lexington, Ky., the Class A team where his oldest son, Koby, plays. After that Clemens is scheduled to pitch June 11 for Double-A Corpus Christi and June 16 for Triple-A Round Rock, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports.

Clemens' return was announced Wednesday by the Astros at a news conference in Houston.

When he is added to the major league roster, he gets a one-year contract worth $22,000,022 -- his uniform number is 22. Because he won't be playing the full season, he gets only a prorated percentage of that, which would come to about $12.25 million if he rejoins Houston in late June. The tentative goal is to have him start against the Minnesota Twins on June 22 -- if he's put on the big league roster on that day, he would earn $12,632,307.

Randy Hendricks, Clemens' agent, reiterated Wednesday that earlier reports of a deal were premature. Hendricks told Stark that Astros GM Tim Purpura went to Hendricks' house last night and met with Hendricks and his brother, Alan. Owner Drayton McLane also took part in the talks by phone, Hendricks said, and they worked out the terms "after midnight."

The Astros were 27-26 and 6½ games behind the NL Central-leading Cardinals after Tuesday night's 6-3 victory over St. Louis.

Clemens pitched for the Astros last season and helped them reach the World Series for the first time. Houston, the New York Yankees, Boston and Texas all tried to lure Clemens to pitch this season.

Clemens last pitched competitively in the World Baseball Classic, where he beat South Africa for the United States in the first round and lost to Mexico 2-1 in the second on March 16.

Clemens retired after the 2003 season, then changed his mind and joined his hometown Astros after former Yankees teammate Andy Pettitte left New York to sign with Houston.

In Detroit, New York Yankees manager Joe Torre heard the report Tuesday that Clemens was returning to Houston.

"I'm not at all surprised," he said. "I didn't think that him coming back here was ever going to happen. Houston's just such a perfect fit for him -- he lives there and Andy's on the team. That's why he came back before, and the circumstances haven't changed."

Texas owner Tom Hicks was told last week by the Hendricks brothers that the Rangers were out of consideration, GM Jon Daniels said.

"Tom got the call on Friday that we were no longer in the running for his services," Daniels said Tuesday. "The way we looked at it was, it would be an honor to be associated with him but we've continued to focus on the 25 guys here. It would have been nice, but we weren't planning on it from the get-go."

Clemens won his seventh Cy Young Award in 2004, going 18-4 with a 2.98 ERA. He went 13-8 with a 1.87 ERA last year, winning the major league ERA title for the first time since 1990.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

It was annoying, but it was BRILLIANT !! The hendricks brothers milked this for all it was worth...

They got the Sox and Yanks involved to drive up the price, so it was a very well orchestrated plan...

Now I gotta see if the AA kid from portland is going to wear #21

They wouldn't even let Josh wear it because that number is held for the Rocket. Josh had to go back to wearing his number from high school. Too bad my number isn't available. Alex Gonzalez took it.

Clemens will get pounded by the Twins on June 22, 8 ER in 3 innings and immediately retire. A week later after leading the his Over-40 softball team to the Bar League championship, he will contemplate unretiring. In September he will sign a one year, $40 million contract with the Astros and pitch one game (prorated to $247,000). He will retire. In 2007 he will find he has some Albanian lineage and lead Albania to the WBC final game. Afterwards he will pull 3 teams from a hat and announce they are the only teams he will pitch for this year......

They have another kid named Gomez who isn't near ready, but apparently puts Milledge to shame. They don't want a repeat of the Kazmir deal and would rather take the chance with Millege. Maybe he will turn out like Wright did
Willis is only in his mid 20's and in his 4th year. If anyone wanted him they'd have to pay with some good prospects.

Stop reminding me of him. I love how the Cubs threw him away for someone who's not even on the team no more.

How many saves has Street blown this year? Swisher is having a monster year and Chavez is doing this thing. I think I read the rest of the bats wasn't doing much. Rich Harden should be fine but is he still hurt? And Loaiza again is hurt and pitched like ass before the injury.
