Hawks acquire Morrison from Flames: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=386262

Low-risk acquisition with some upside if Morrison can stay healthy. The Hawks need more depth at center.

Caught the highlights. I do wonder if Weber was a bit taller, would he have beat Chara? It's possible.

For sure.

The hardest shot speeds are a joke IMHO.

Back in the day when Al MacInnis & Al Iafrate (105.2 MPH) were shooting with wood sticks, and were not 10 feet tall.....now that was something to see.

Today with Chara and composite sticks....meh.

It's like having a home run derby with aluminum bats....it's just not the same.

CROSBY HAS TREATABLE SOFT-TISSUE INJURY TO HIS NECK

PITTSBURGH -- Sidney Crosby says he has no issue with the Pittsburgh Penguins over his medical treatment and news of a soft-tissue neck injury gives him cause for encouragement.

"I think the biggest thing to take from it is that it's something I can work on. I can come in and get my neck worked on," the Penguins star told a news conference at the Consol Energy Center.

"There's a pretty big possibility that could be causing some of the issues, so I really hope that's the case and hope with some treatment that it'll improve and that's hopefully the end of it."

Crosby is back skating and says he has felt improvement but is not where he wants to be.

"It's encouraging to be skating," he said. "I'm just happy at this point with doing that."

Crosby's comments capped three days of developments -- and complications -- surrounding his health.

On Saturday, the Penguins confirmed that a specialist had diagnosed their captain with a neck injury in addition to his concussion-related problems. This came amidst reports that Crosby had a fracture to his C1 and C2 vertebrae -- with Crosby's agent Pat Brisson saying it was too soon to draw a conclusion on that.

Still, it led to speculation that the Crosby camp was unhappy with the star's medical care in his return from concussion-related problems, something the Penguins sought to dispel Monday.

Crosby added his voice to that Tuesday.

"I think the team's been very encouraging," he said. "There's not a lot of answers with this stuff."

GM Ray Shero told the news conference that Crosby had been receiving treatment for his neck and that the club had encouraged him to seek expert opinions.

Earlier Tuesday, the Pens issued a statement detailing the medical timeline.

The Pens says Brisson, along with Penguins owner Mario Lemieux and CEO David Morehouse went Monday morning to Philadelphia to have Dr. Alexander Vaccaro review the CT scan and MRI taken by Dr. Robert S. Bray last week in Los Angeles.

Bray had diagnosed a neck injury but wanted someone else to review the results, the club said.

Vaccaro is a spinal trauma expert at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and past president of the American Spinal Injury Association.

His opinion was that Crosby was suffering from a soft-tissue injury of the neck that could be causing neurological symptoms.

"Bray has treated Crosby with an injection to alleviate swelling in the C1-2 joint of the neck and will be overseeing his progression with therapists," the NHL team said in a statement. "Doctors say the symptoms of a soft-tissue neck injury are similar to concussion symptoms.

"Vaccaro, Bray and UPMC doctors all agree that Crosby is safe, the injury is treatable, and he will return to action when he is symptom-free."

Crosby said he hoped the injection was a "one-time thing."

While Crosby's condition turned out to be a big topic at the weekend all-star break, the native of Cole Harbour, N.S., said he spent his break in doctors' offices.

Asked about timing of the concussion and neck injury, Crosby said "I'm not a doctor."

Down 4-1 to the maple syrups with 11 mins to go and we come back and tie the game, with 6.6 seconds left, and win in the shootout! One of the best comebacks I've seen in quite some time. Definitely was a great atmosphere, and most fans stayed to the very end.

Toews Ranked Best Leader by Hockey News

And second for best-money player.

Not bad.

From Chicago Tribune:

Success on the ice has been a little uneven for the Chicago Blackhawks of late, but the organization fared well in a renowned magazine's "Best of Everything in Hockey" issue.

The Hockey News recently ranked over 50 different categories at the professional level in voting conducted by its 30 NHL correspondents. The Hawks and members of the organization placed first in four categories, second in five and fourth in four.

First-place finishes included Best Business Savvy, Best Jersey, Best Leader (Jonathan Toews) and Best Grinder (Dave Bolland).

The Hawks finished second in Best Owner (Rocky Wirtz), Best Money Player (Toews), Best Faceoff Man (Toews), Best Hockey Song (Chelsea Dagger) and Best Public Relation Department.

Third-place finishes included Best Hidden Gem (Patrick Sharp), Best Dressed (Sharp), Best intermission and Best Arena Food.

What's about it...?

Seems more like the League screwed up and time was over when Drew Norris scored the goal.

The National Hockey League is looking into a scoreboard error at the Staples Center on Wednesday night that gave the Los Angeles Kings a 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

"We're looking at it from all aspects," NHL executive vice-president Colin Campbell told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on Thursday. "We're sending two people out there. Is it possible for the clock to stop like that? We're going to look at everything."

Kings blueliner Drew Doughty scored the winning goal with less than a second to play in regulation to secure the win. But when the Blue Jackets looked at video after the game, they saw that the clock froze for about a second before the goal - meaning time should have expired.

Campbell also confirmed that regardless of the league's findings, the result of the game can't be changed. "No you can't," he told TSN. "Once the game is over, it's over."

Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson explained in his team blog on Thursday morning that the incident could have an 'enormous impact' on the standings.

"It's easy to say that this doesn't matter," he wrote. "We, the Blue Jackets, are in last place and it is likely not going to affect our place in the standings. However, in my opinion, this matters in many respects. It matters to our players, to our coaches, every person in our organization and our fans."

Mr. Hockey has mild dementia.

At 83, Mr. Hockey is still in demand and on the move. Gordie Howe is about to embark on another series of fundraisers to support dementia research.

It's a personal cause. The disease killed his wife, Colleen, in 2009 and is beginning to affect him.

"He's a little bit worse than last year, but pretty close to about the same," son Marty said. "He just loses a little bit more, grasping for words.

"The worst part of this disease is there's nothing you can do about it."
While the long-term effects of concussions have been very much in the news lately, the family is hesitant to link the Hall of Famer's condition to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the degenerative brain disease typically found in autopsies of people who have had multiple head injuries, including more than a dozen former NFL and NHL players.

Concussions weren't tracked when Howe played, so it is impossible to know how many he sustained. And he didn't start showing signs of dementia until his late 70s.
"I don't think anybody can really answer that question," Marty said of a connection to CTE. "He went for so long without any symptoms whatsoever. You don't have to be an athlete or in contact sports to get dementia."

Howe's dementia is currently mild and his family members haven't sought a diagnosis of exactly what kind he has. They did that with Colleen, who died at 76 of Pick's disease. The rare form of dementia is marked by changes in mood, behavior and personality, followed by memory loss similar to that experienced in Alzheimer's.

Another son, Murray, a radiologist, says his father's symptoms don't fit either Alzheimer's or Pick's.

"He has what we call mild cognitive impairment," Murray said. "His brain power is not what it used to be. In terms of the prognosis and diagnosis, it's still wide open."

Howe has short-term memory loss, difficulty speaking and some confusion in the evening when the sun goes down. The latter, called "sundowning," occurs in people with dementia, although the cause is unclear.

"He's always worse in the evening," Marty said. "It's like when the sun goes down, something flips the switch."

But Howe's personality hasn't changed and he continues to recognize his family and friends.

Howe's stamina and power were legendary during his 33 seasons of pro hockey. Physically, he's doing well for a man about to turn 84 in March. His sons say Howe likes to do household chores and go fishing, one of his favorite pastimes.

"He's still Mr. Hockey and that's what is so great because he's just such a pleasure to have around," Murray said. "He'll wake up first thing in the morning and there's a bunch of leaves outside and he'll rake for three hours. He's so pleasant and upbeat.

"When he first started showing signs of memory loss, we were concerned it was Alzheimer's and it was just going to go downhill."

It's possible Howe's dementia is vascular in nature. He suffered from heart disease later in his life and required the implantation of a coronary stent about a decade ago.

"He's had a couple episodes of getting faint or passing out around that time," Murray recalled. "It's possible he had a couple of mini-strokes that picked off some of the parts of his brain that you need to be able to retain short-term memory. That's my theory and what his family physician is thinking."

Howe had episodes of forgetfulness about six years ago while caring for his wife. The Howe children recognized the signs they'd previously seen in their mother.

The hockey great also was tired and not looking after himself, which made his condition worse. A program of regular physical activity has helped him combat his dementia.

"He can easily walk four miles on very hilly terrain without a problem," Murray said. "When he first came to us, he couldn't walk 100 yards up a slight incline without having to stop because of chest pains. It was a complete turnaround for him."

After Colleen Howe's death, the Howes were approached by the Toronto health organization Baycrest to put Gordie Howe's face on a fundraising campaign for Alzheimer's.

Affiliated with the University of Toronto, Baycrest specializes in mental diseases of the elderly.

Howe, accompanied by Marty, makes public appearances at an annual series of Scotiabank Pro-Am hockey tournaments across Canada. More than $16 million has been raised by the Gordie and Colleen Howe Fund for Alzheimer's.
Howe is scheduled to attend a Canucks game in Vancouver on Thursday night to promote a Scotiabank Pro-Am in that city later this year.

Marty says his father plans to help kick off the same tournaments in Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto this spring.

He also will also attend a news conference Thursday afternoon in advance of a tribute in his honor at Friday's Vancouver Giants game.

Howe has his photo taken with fans and signs autographs under Marty's watchful eye at the events. A speech isn't an option anymore. Fatigue tends to exacerbate Howe's condition and Marty doesn't want his father feeling strained.

"If you see him now, obviously you can kind of tell he's not firing on all cylinders," Marty says. "Most people see Gordie and they're just happy Gordie is talking to them."

Marty was alarmed by a decline in his father's condition before an appearance in Calgary last year, but didn't want his condition made public until the family had a better handle on his condition.

"For people who are dealing with this, you have to have a sense of humor," he said. "Nobody wants to see their family members go through this. It gets harder. Towards the end, it's really no quality of life whatsoever. Pretty depressing, but you have to find the humor in some of it. Otherwise, it will kill you, too."

Marty and Murray are just grateful the dementia hasn't changed their father's personality or attitude so far.

"We're enjoying the times we have now," Marty said.

It's much ado about nothing.

From what I've been reading several fans have run a stop watch versus the scoreboard, and played the end of the game again, and have found that they end at the same time.

No "glitch" no extra time.

Quote from another forum:

I have done audio/post for over 20 years and worked with timecode burn on video. Video runs at 29.97 frames per second, but to simplify the math I will use 30 frames per second ( which is the standard 35 mm film rate ). That means we have 30 frames for each second of time and 3 frames equal .1 ( one tenth ) of a second. On puck Daddy he shows there were 4 frames with the same image at 0.18 burn into video ( Columbus GM on Doughty goal: ). One of the frames is the actual image and the other three are the time the image of the clock is delayed, that means the time is delayed by .1 ( one tenth ) of a second. The puck went in at .4 ( four tenths ) of a second so the goal went in at .3 ( three tenth ) of a second and was a good goal.

Check out the big brain on Deano!!!!!
"Those clocks are sophisticated instruments that calculate time by measuring electrical charges called coulombs, explained Kings general manager Dean Lombardi in an email to TSN. "Given the rapidity and volume of electrons that move through the measuring device the calibrator must adjust at certain points which was the delay you see – the delay is just recalibrating for the clock moving too quickly during the 10 - 10ths of a second before the delay - this insures that the actual playing time during a period is exactly 20 minutes. That is not an opinion - that is science - amazing devise quite frankly."
