Drove total 400 miles yesterday within 13 hours.

Sounds it like was a lot of fun! I really need to take my car to the track... maybe need to just make it out to some local meets to find people down to go. The guys I work with have FR-S' too, but it doesn't sound like they're really down.

 

I had a dream this weekend that I bought an S and was driving around with the top down.

It was glorious.

 

I was thinking about one too but when I opened the sunroof on the ST and the sun started baking my pasty white skin from a long winter, I started second guessing myself

 

It only takes a week or so to start looking like George Hamilton.

 

I have the worst driver's tan..

 

I once drove from LA to Vegas top down all the way with sun glasses on.

After that, never even touched my sun glasses again.

 

I did that yesterday in real life. And it was indeed glorious.

Nice.. I still have 8/32's on my tires at 15,000 miles! I swear I push it in the corners.

Thinking of doing Super Sports for my next tires.

 

Super Sports have the tendency to go greasy when they get very hot. And they are known to wear super fast! At least in the 86 community.

I would go with either new RS3 or Dunlop z2!

Or I might just stick with another set of Toyo Proxes 4's, they're quite grippy, quiet and do reasonably well on wet surfaces. I'd rather not eat tires faster that aren't as good.

Get the Federal 595 RS-R. They are very grippy, not quite as good as the RS3s or Z2s, but are super cheap at a little over $100/tire. They're better than the Michi Pilot SS and everything but the extreme performance summer category of tires. Everyone I know who got them was very happy with them

 

Throwing this out there...

BFG G-Force Sport Comp 2s. Fantastic tire, tons of mileage, quiet as far as performance tires, cheap, great on the track. I found the z2 to be too sticky. I've run 2 sets and although very grippy, I couldn't feel what the tire was doing. It was get me to the limit and then kill me. I can feel what the BFG's are doing and can really dial in pushing it to the limit with them. They aren't as sticky as the z2s, but I get 3 times as much mileage out of them and feel like I'm a better driver because of them.

If I had a set of track wheels I wouldn't hesitate to throw on Rs3s.

 

How are they in the rain? Or are these just for the autocross?

Living in Oregon I need something that can handle the occasional shower/puddles I get stuck with, especially on mountain ranges.

RS3 is borderline dangerous in the sticky weather conditions. Please cross that off from the list. haha

i heard these offer tremendous performance.

 

i found the hankook ventus v12 to be a good compromise for performance and rainy weather. for reference, it only rains in the SF bay area. even in heavy down pours, i feel comfortable in those tires.

 

I can't say how these are in the rain, but I'm sure they're fine. Having raced with the RS3s in the rain, which people all say are terrible in the wet, I think people's fear of the s2k in the rain are overblown, especially with the AP2s. The RS3 was fine, and you're not going to just randomly spin out unless you're driving like an idiot, so I'm sure the 595s are just fine as well.

These aren't really for autocross. For that you'd want the top-tier of street tire such as RS3s or Z2s. Buying anything else for that sort of thing would be a waste of money, though you could take these to an event and do ok. The 595 RSR however are probably the best tire for street duty due to the fact that they're pretty close in grip to the others but far cheaper. I'd have them on mine if I didn't autocross. I know tons of local guys who get these and are super happy, swearing by them. Besides, the difference in feel of having a really sticky tire is amazing and by far the most beneficial thing you can do to the car.

Total BS unless you're driving like a jackass


That said, if you want an awesome tire and to still be able to drive like a jackass in the rain, get the Bridgestone RE-11a. That and the Conti DW are the best wet tires.

 

Just relaying the information that I get from the FT86 forum. A lot of east coast people have tried them on their DD set. Everyone says go for something else.

I'm in LA. We don't even get muc rain here... so no personal experience whatsoever.

 

Well the RS3 is discontinued anyway. The RS3 v2 will be starting to ship soon, which had a compound change and is supposedly better in the rain. We'll see whether it's better or not pretty soon.

I'm getting some fresh, never used Dunlop Z1 star specs from a friend for when my Rivals wear out, which should happen in a few months. I LOVED these tires when I had them for some of last year, so I'm excited for the day I get to use these again. I think they're a little better than the current Z2 (which is also now discontinued for the Z2 star spec coming Q4 of this year)

 

Nice tread on those Star Specs. I'm not near replacement yet, and have been satisfied with my sumitomo HTR Z IIIs, but I'd have to seriously consider some Z2s or even Z1s.

 

It's definitely worth considering. They're the only part of the car that touches the road, and they really make a big difference. The HTR ZIII are decent though.

 

I'll say it again, the S2000 is THE perfect car for Costco runs. Keeps me from buying stupid stuff I don't need

The HTR ZIII are excellent in the rain, which I've had to drive through twice in the last week. They are pretty good in the dry as well. Planning on at least one autocross session during the summer so I'll get to test them in that circumstance, too.

I'm making a determined effort to daily the S this year to keep miles off the V wagon and rain performance is key. I haven't usually driven my S in the rain before this year.....but am finding that my AP1 is EXCELLENT in the rain with these tires (and with me not driving like a jackass).

 

Installed an AEM V1 intake this weekend ... VTEC has never ever sounded so good

 

Leaving for my HPDE at Mid-Ohio shortly. I'll try to supply pics at least from the track. I'll let you know how an ILX goes around the track. It was hard to decide which enthusiast car to drive down, but in the spirit of the day it'll be the S2000. Besides, winter tires are still on the V.

Thankfully it's only 1 1/4 hours from me, so short drive by my standards, so should be still fresh upon arrival. Excited!

Signing up for autocross post-haste.

I keep hearing "eyes up", "look ahead to where you want to be", "trust that the track is there in a blind curve", "when in doubt, both feet out" in my dreams and everyday driving now.

I drove the autocross in one of their AP2 S2000s. Wooooooooooot! And I enjoyed the tiny bit of extra torque compared to my AP1.

I video'd my first laps around Mid-Ohio at the end of the day via Google Glass. Will upload when I get a chance, it needs editing as the raw footage is 30 minutes.

Driving a sports car on a track, fast, is HARD work. Hats off to pro racers everywhere, I had no idea it was that tough.

 

I am breathing very heavily at the end of one autocross run. Can you imagine the guys running 3-4 hr stints in 24 hour races?
