long story short.. I made this.. then J was like.. bro, don't post that, my kids might see.
So I made the one you're using.. but then J was like.. I'm the Mayor of Pound Town.
and I made this one.
I feel like they should do some market research re: the people who buy this car. However, I worry if they do too much research they'll cancel the car altogether.
Question about the ECS short shifter. How does the shifter feel in the car now? After driving a 6MT version of the R, I was left largely disappointed with the absolute lack of any pedal or shifter feel.
The DSG is the first time I've ever really considered getting an auto. But prefer not to. So can the shifter feel be improved? Friends of mine are pushing me towards a 6MT R, and just do a clutch and short shifter upgrade on it. Thoughts?
I will likely end up voiding warranty also, but whatever. I'll probably keep it at stage 1.5 at most.
I'm still considering a 2016 S4 in 6mt... But I'm starting to realize the odds of me finding one optioned the way I like is near zero
The stock shifter feel is trash, so I understand completely where you're coming from. The shift cable bushings make the biggest difference as far as feel and accuracy is concerned. The short shifter helped with the throws. A heavier knob was a good upgrade as well. The stock clutch has a very high engagement point, and it benefits greatly from a clutch pedal stop. I'm using the "Home Depot" pedal stop: https://forums.vwvortex.com/showthre...Golf-5-and-6MT
The delay valve removal added feel as well, and so did removing the swirl valve. But removing the swirl valve does add some noise and resonance in the cabin from the pressure plate. It doesn't bother me, but it has bothered others. Ultimately, the best way to increase pedal feel is to get a new clutch, which I'll be ordering in the next few weeks.
But, are you looking for a quarter mile car or a fun car? The DSGs are much faster then the 6mt, especially tuned. Stage 2 DSG Rs are running deep into the 12s (some have cracked into 11s) while the 6mt with the same mods struggles to run mid to high 12s.

The DSG is also much better able to handle the higher hp and torque vs the 6MT. I don't at all regret not going manual, especially when just generally driving around and in traffic. Leave the adaptive cruise on and let the car deal with the heavy lifting of slow creeping along in traffic.

As much as I love rowing my own, I'm weighing the pros and cons of trading in for a 2019 DSG, so I can go stage 2/3 without worry. The Spektrum color program isn't making it any easier...
@Majofo I've never scrambled to mute my line on a conference call as fast as I did just now while reading your posts
A couple of weeks ago I opened my phone and I had that gif open
I was in a meeting and a couple of people saw including director
Instead of being awkward I explained it's my bro from the internet
and we shopped him to look like he's sucking down "hot dogs"
Everyone went ah.. and had a good chuckle.
Everyone says the DSG on the R is brilliant
I truly believed it when the R almost came in last in the hot hatch showdown
My work brosef has a Stage 2 R.. he said he's well aware that the DSG is quicker
But the manny makes him truly happy and I totally dig that

I'd do it for the color program but I'd get murdered in my sleep the night after I told my wife I was going to get another car.

My GTI was a DSG, and it was a great transmission, but jerky at low speeds. I think it would've been much better with a tune. The main reason I went with the manual was because - realistically speaking - this will likely be my last new car with a manual transmission. When I have kids, I'll need to get something larger, and I'd love for it to be a wagon. Unfortunately, none of the wagons available here (that I'd consider) have a manual available.

I'm pretty confident my girlfriend won't even wait for me to fall asleep
Love those! But - it's hard to find a clean one these days, especially a manual.
If the Golf R Estate was available here, I'd be driving one. Jameson takes up the entire back seat in the R, and he doesn't fit in the hatch area anymore. If I had the wagon, he could go back there and a baby seat or two can still fit in the back seat.
But, I guess this is why the gf has a CRV

Late to the party.
Welcome back, and nice R.
I was really close to pulling the trigger on a GTI Autobahn, but had a W205 Mercedes fall into my lap for a steal.

I don't know what I'm looking for
It's going to be my next DD. I want reasonable power levels and still be fun and useful for the everyday. I know the DSG is super fast, but shiiiet.... I dunno. I don't need all out speed. I can pick up a toy car for that, eventually.
I've never really owned a fast car either... My Z was the closest thing and it still only did 5.0s 0-60. I've always put handling ahead of everything else.
I was supposed to test drive the DSG this past weekend until the dealer screwed me over. Said they couldnt bring the car in for whatever reason. Maybe I'll do it this weekend.
Also, I thought the MK8 is coming out in 2019, isn't it? I've heard VW is killing the 6MT and the car will be part electric. I'd hate to be the guinea pig for new VW tech, that's for sure.
The 2019s are still MK7s in the US. We won't get the MK8 until 2021-22 or so.
The 2019s are supposed to start rolling onto lots around Dec, from what I've heard - at least for GTIs. They may wait to release the Rs until spring again.
I thought being November already, the 2019 Mk7 Golf R would be out by now... Since it's not, I assume that means the MK8 is coming?
The 2018 R's didn't hit the lot until March or April so I'm guessing that the 2019's will be similarly late to the party. Also, given that the mk7.5's that just started this year in the US, I'm guessing it'll run until at least 2021 if not 2022.

You on drugs. I just checked. MK8 coming in 2019.
There is no word about the R yet. Maybe the MK7 will carry over one more year?
Either way, I was looking at Rs last december and they already had the 2018 R just come in. It wasn't a spring release either. Not up north anyway.

I think Canadia is different. In the US, the mk7.5 dropped in March/April. I'd expect the EU would get the mk8 first next year and North America would get it the year after with the GTI/R showing up the year after that at the very earliest.
I can tell you guys that no matter how much power you have, it's never enough.
I had 500+ on tap and eventually I wasn't that impressed with acceleration either unless I drove something else for a bit.
Lesson learned there is be happy with what you got...if you can pull into traffic, you're good to go for daily driving.
If it's purpose built for weekend or track...fuck it, make it your project but they shouldn't be one and the same.
IMO.
Kurt, fuck me...I missed that review...had me in stitches. Did Gatr kill himself?

The MK7 was released in Europe in 2012 (as a 2013) and didn't hit North America until 2014 (as a 2015). I'd expect the same for the mk8.

I really want torque vectoring, but that's assuming the part electric part is driving the rear wheels. I hope it's not 3500lbs+ though.

This is true. I've upgraded the engine in every car I've owned in some way (with the exception of the FR-S, nothing was helping that piece of shit) and there is never enough power. I'm already eyeing stage 3 upgrades after I replace the clutch since I'm getting used to what I have now
That's why I feel like you should be happy that it's a fuckin awesome to drive daily...
and then buy yourself a C6 Z06 or a lightly used Kitty for weekend fuckery to make SUPER fast.
