If you want to experience pain .. at least get some torque out of it.

But yeah .. B8.5 S4 ftmfw. Stage 2+ DSG car hurts a lot of feelings for pretty minimal money.

Thanks for all the input guys. Morgan, I hope it's ok the thread has for now become the car talk thread, sorry if it's not ok. But......

I know small Audi pain and would start leery. I have an old car a(92 325ic) and there is a raw fun to no nannies. There is something nice about that but I also have modern cars and nannies can be nice if you f00k up.

I am looking for a fun, manual, most likely RWD sports car.

Anything can happen.

Oooo that's pretty.

I think I'd have a hard time spending that much on a modded 17 year old car, but it does look good.

I had my qualms about using the S2000 as a daily, and also have an issue with dailying a built motor. Then again, you may be much more familiar than I am thinking and as a second car. All that is irrelevant then

Tasteful mods on that thing, damn. Quality parts too. I am actually kind of in love.

It's been up for a while & is really nice I agree Morgan, lotta money for a used highly modded car. All S2Ks cause that problem, they are all 14-19 year old cars many with well over 100k and most well over 10k.

It will not be a daily (unless I fall so in love I want to drive it all the time).

Initially I wanted a 2002Tii, my favorite car from my youth that was killed by a red light runner. Then I thought 240Z would be nice. Then the rabbit hole opened and it has become anything can happen.

I'm in no rush, there is no need, hell I don't NEED anything. This is 100% a want.

I'd think the Gas Monkey parts & assembly are worth more than asking and I'd still never go near this.

A different set of wheels & paint would do a lot for that Bentley IMO.

Every time I daydream about a second fun car, the most balanced option is an M3 of some generation. It's one of the few cars I can think of that feels suitable doing anything a car enthusiast would do. Track days, road trips, mountain driving, stoplight drag races, car shows, modifying, detailing - it's appropriate to some degree doing all of those things. Very few other cars fit that bill IMO.

I love M3s. Problem is they are beat to sh!t or concourse, hard to find in between & even beat up people are insane on valuations.
https://losangeles.craigslist.org/ws...121831794.html

That is hardly worth 4k, guy has the nerve to ask 7500

This is maybe worth 6.

That first sure presented well in the first two pics. Then you got to the other ones

I remember about 5-10 years ago the e36 M3s were selling around $5k for a decent one. Now look at them... There was a short period there when the e46 was reasonably priced too, but even they shot up. And the e9xs are still pricey. It's unfortunate.

As a former E36 owner, those cars aren’t worth $2K with the work that needs to be done to them.

That E46 should be even less.

I'd offer 1500 for the 2001. I'm sure he thinks he's entitled to the 3-4k he put into it in the last 3x,xxxk.

Um sorry, it's 186k 19 year old car that needs at least it's top end rebuilt.

Hello! I really like guys who are interested in cars. I would like to imagine this! Can we talk? You can find me here in my profile:

So much fun in spam.

So at best that e46 is worth 3500 PERFECT. seems rebuilding the head will all in be upwards of 2k (seeing as the while you are in there stuff needs to be done. (timing belt, tensioner, water pump hoses etc)

I emailed the guy I'd do 1500 including the radio (that I don't want, hate android)

Here's what KBB says btw:

You think the JLUR is crazy, check out prices on the JKUR. The resale value on a previous gen model is absolutely nuts.

I'd highly recommend to not daily a S2000, it's about as far to the impractical side of things as it gets. Especially so if you live in a climate that gets cold/snowy. The S2k is a party in a can, tons of fun, but it's definitely a one trick pony and doesn't do well when you want it to settle down and get some normal work done. That said, it's a driving/ownership experience like none other and I'd recommend everyone at least drive one in their lifetime.

@Flipster23 Black TL was 7 years. That was my record.

I'm so all over the place with cars too...I actually think I really need to thin my herd.
I just have a hard time deciding which car to go.
I love all the options mentioned. I had the opportunity to buy an E46 that
was well maintained from a friend and he swayed me from it. He sold it to a kid
that wrecked it in a month.
Then I had the time I almost sold the S2000 to @thoiboi and bought that Laguna
Blue CSL replica that the seller tried to hide drove like burning asshole. I've been so
close to BMW ownership a few times but every time I end up back at Audi. I guess
if I ever tempt German fate again I'll fuck with a Porsche.

Haha, I wish a manual transmission wasn't such a must for me. Really limits my choices. Automatics and DCTs are amazing these days.

I have driven a few S2000s, both AP1 and AP2 and really was in love with the whole package. Purpose-built roadsters are usually something else, compared to a convertible variant of a coupe (Boxster not withstanding). Absolute crime that Honda has not made a successor. I would quickly be in line for one probably. I live in the perfect climate where I could drive it year-round, doesn't even rain much here.

S2000 would have been my sole car, and I simply don't think I would have been able to put up with it it as a daily, despite or possibly due to dealing with my 4th gen Camaro for so long. That car was a turd, way more problematic than an S2000 would be but it introduced me to open-air motoring. Practicality aside, everything that makes the S2000 so special - its high-revving nature, the raw, visceral driving experience - make it a terrible daily IMO. Those things make it all the more enjoyable as a second car, but that's something I realized I don't manage well.

Ironically my commute avoids freeways now, so my gripes about the S2K would seldom bug me. But now I am like so many soft new car owners who want the amenities and refinement. Don't care to upgrade audio anymore. Carplay is basically a must. Not having a smart key is unreasonably annoying now.

You think the JLUR is crazy, check out prices on the JKUR. The resale value on a previous gen model is absolutely nuts.

Oh yeah, I know. I looked definitely nice if you own one though.

The Mustang bit is so true. I got one as a rental and was very underwhelmed.

I became such a believer in Audi after driving them. Used to be a BMW guy for the same reason. Never owned anything German, constantly driving my ex's E90 was as close as it got.

Intensely looked at S4s, even asked you about them. Had a rhetorical mod-list going before even buying

I like to mod cars, but I am cheap and really don't like to spend money to get problems fixed. At the same time, I am lazy and hate fixing them myself. Walnut shell blasting was feasible to me, but I wouldn't be able to drop a motor for work (chain tensioner). My friend laughed at me when I asked him, cause he knows me too well. Ultimately convinced me otherwise.

If it weren't for the carbon buildup and chain tensioner issue, plus the whole Rona deal I would probably be in an S4. Big ifs though. I live vicariously though you guys instead though. My car guy friends have moved on to other things.

I actually keep thinking I need to get rid of one of my sedans...
When I originally bought the TL back, I figured the S4 would go
but as time has gone one and I refreshed the suspension, I just
can't let it go. Especially since the S2000 and Wangler are both
manual already...the dual clutch is fucking amazing in it's own right
even if I still wish it manual at times.

Funny you mention walnut blasting...I just bought the blaster, shells
and the intake port 3d printed thing from the guy on Audizine...
I am near 84K and I want to enjoy it for a long time to come. I did DSG
service before going stage 2 also. The timing chain tensioner, from what
I've read is not relegated to the B8.5 S4 with this motor specifically...
supposedly there was a TSB but it's not super prevalent.

You know what, I think I asked you about this specifically and you're right. JFC, my memory has always been poo, its just worse now. I'll be senile by age 50 at this rate

Can't stress this enough, the DCT, DSG, PDK, etc. transmissions today are so much better than the dogshit SMG, SMT and so on of old. You won't ever hear me badmouth DSG.

Whenever I follow you and others' build threads, the dedication to maintain and mod multiple vehicles is inspiring to me. Keep it up! Also, thanks for complicating my car search again.

Bro, I'm just as bad.
How about I forgot you ever even asked me about it.
Thanks for the kind words, man.
I actually went back and googled after you posted that to see if I was
right in not being worried about the chain.

There are 2 guys local to me that part out and sell junked cars...full engines and trannies...
a plus for German to have those parts pretty readily available. That said, read up on the
high mileage B8.5 S4 threads...everyone way over 100K say they are robust as hell.

Oh yeah, I know. I looked definitely nice if you own one though.

The Mustang bit is so true. I got one as a rental and was very underwhelmed.
Honestly, I'd say a Golf would probably serve you well for the things you've talked about. It's practical, fun, fast (relatively), cheap to buy, cheap to run, cheap to insure, cheap to mod, and comes in manual. Probably one of the best daily drivers you can find. Oh and it comes with smart key and carplay though I use android auto. I can honestly say the only time I used the factory nav in mine was on the drive home...that's it.

Yes, resale value is good if you own one but still sucks when trying to buy it before owning it. I got a good deal on mine but it was definitely not cheap. I paid pretty close to the same amount for my wife's brand new 2019 Outback 6cyl limited in late 2018 as I did for my 2013 JKUR in mid 2019 lol.

I would sell the S4 before the values truly tank. You can always buy one back in a few years when they're worth $10k. Maybe offload the Jeep too That'll leave you with a sporty-ish sedan, two seater, and the brown tank.

I agree with Sam, the Golf is probably a good choice for you. If you keep it stock or do a mild stage 1 tune, the factory clutch should last you about 25k miles, if you're smart with it (ie - no WOT at 2k rpm in fourth). VW has some pretty good financing deals right now too.

Though if you go with a leftover 2019 or a slightly used 2018 or 19, you get a 6yr/72k mile factory warranty.

You'll have no choice but to go with a leftover 2019 - there are no 2020 Golf Rs in the states

We all know J is all about them trannies.

But yeah, heh. The supercharged 3.0T ( ) is one hell of an engine. Sound, refinement, and of course power. It really sold me on the B8.5 S4 specifically.

True, true.

Honestly, the Golf R would be perfect. Low key. Comfortable. Capable. I love the way it looks inside and out.

The Achilles heel on the manual is the clutch, which is a big deal for me. Replacing it wouldn't be something I would do myself, and having driven various cars with aftermarket clutches, I can't remember one that I was really happy with. Big investment to take a chance on, and would feel bad if I hated the driving experience afterwards.

I am a stubborn dinosaur and honestly would be fine with a DCT. But as J alluded to, the "if only" thought would linger in the back of my mind. Multiple cars would make this so much easier, but space and dedication are my problems.

Ugh, damn you guys

Big time analysis paralysis. It wouldn't stay stock either.

Just need to get my shit in order, and just test drive them all. I was actually planning on renting through Turo to get extended test drives out of potential finalists.

I wish you lived nearby, I'd let you take my R for a spin with the clutch I have in it. It's VERY daily-able.

Actually... if you want, I can ask in my groups if there are any Rs in your area with an upgraded clutch that may be willing to let you try it out.

There's apparently a Golf R coming up for sale end-of-year from a member on here. I think he used to have a thread dedicated to the car, but it's long gone now.

I heard he might be willing to sell it now, as-is, if the price is right.
