GTIs don't hold their value for shit, but even so - a fender bender wouldn't result in a salvage title.
2 door GTIs are pretty rare, but 2015s are notoriously problematic. The photos aren't the greatest but it looks like the front passenger fender has been replaced with an aftermarket unit (gaps near the headlight aren't tight), and it looks like the whole side of the car has orange peel. You can see that there's a gap in the upper rad support where it meets the headlight brace on the driver side, and the whole front end looks twisted.
Crackpipe.

wow, good eye
I know what to look for after someone points it out, but look at this grille emblem/hood alignment like a botched nose job

I noticed the front issues and radiator support but not the one further back. I also know minor fenderbenders don't cause salvage.
What about the mods? junk or ok? I know little about VW/Audi recently. I remember having all kinds of electrical issues with the 2001 3 door A3 (basically an Audi GTI).
I have been driving dreadnaughts since 2011 and want something fun. What years can I hope for a decent drive & which should I avoid? When you sell yours, Morgan what will you expect to get?
I have browsed around VWVortex but like all sites there is so much clutter.

I'd look for a 2017 or late 2016, since you can get a Sport with performance package. What's your budget? I have a friend selling his 2017 GTI Sport with some tasteful modifications, but IMO his price is a bit on the high side. If the performance pack isn't a crucial thing for you, and it'll be treated more like a runabout - you can find non-perf pack 2016 models in the mid- to low teens, if you look hard enough. If you're looking to spend no more than $10k, you should be able to find an mk6 GTI without a problem. It's a different motor (not as powerful) and the chassis isn't as nice, but the later years were pretty reliable.
Rs hold their values, so I'm expecting to get around $30k for mine when I sell in the next 6-9 months. But that all depends on what the used car market looks like.

VW hasn't improved the stock clutch holding power in the Mk7 R, have they? One of the biggest obstacles preventing me from getting one.

lol absolutely not. It's still made of paper mache.
I actually think it's the same part number as the one in the GTI. Mine started slipping 7 miles into a stage 2 tune.

If it's more of a weekend fun car, I'd go with something rwd. But that's just me. 240Zs can be had under $20k these days?

Maybe a SBC swapped 240, or a non-running/rough example.

My dad has a dead 280Z behind his shop that he rescued from a neighbor's field.
Will be used as a donor/parts car in the event he gets a road-worthy-ish 280Z.

Do 'em all. I think dumb Rockstar has the right approach to these things - buy car, enjoy for a few years, then taste something else. There are too many automotive flavours to miss out on.

I like it a lot, I messaged the seller we'll see if he's open to negotiation. I'll drive to L.A., visit my house & load the Tundra bed up with parts, rent a hauler and drive it home in a day!

I don't know you...but I already love you too much to let you go down the B5 rabbit hole. Ask @TylerT
Is this car just for fun? Is it just for weekend?
Are you into forced induction or you want V8 power?
CTS-V 2nd gen is a strong contender and sedans are getting near your price range if you stretch.
S4 and S5 I would strongly suggest you stick with B8.5 aka 2013 to 2016 because that is when they
both had the V6T and the upgraded DSG (if you go that route over manual). Of all the cars I've sampled...
it is still the best all around car in terms of speed, feel, power, tech, audio, efficiency and mpg...
@Marcelechka has the V8 older S5 (B8, before the refresh) and loves it. Has had no issues in 45k he
put on it in a year @Predatorbird just upgraded from a DSG Mark VII GTI to a B8.5 S4 so can probably give
his opinion too.
I do the same as you (obviously) and go looking on cargurus for any car I think is cool.
I love that 280 but I will say that over time, sometimes old cars don't feel that FUN to drive...
comparatively with what rolls off the line now, that is going to feel slow unless you swap motor
or boost and of course upgrade the Tranny. I personally don't have the knowledge to do that (yet)
but even if I did that's an expensive endeavor. So although $8K is not too bad to spend, it's still $8k
that could have gone to something a little more complete and what you want. Given where you live
and your access to fun driving roads I would strongly consider an S2000 if it's just for fucking around.
Even a beat up or boosted one you won't lose your ass on for owning for 6 months or until you get
bored and move on.
Anyway, I'm a rambling man, apparently. Sorry for helping the derail, Morgie
