+1 especially if it's more than 2 years old.
you obviously didn't shop around much then

his M5 had like 39k miles on it, and he got the extended warranty

The only place i shop for cars now is from the official dealers. I have purchased cars in the past from reg dealers and people but i choose not to anymore.

Well, there you go then. You're going to pay a premium at a BMW dealer for a used BMW just because they're going to say they "looked it over" and that makes the buyer feel better; regardless of whether the actual quality of the item is same/better/worse.

I kept my eyes open for a number of months, went to look at the cars on the lots, educated myself on the issues to look for on the respective models I was considering, and when I finally found the apparent gem of a deal, pounced on it. In the end, I did "luck out"...but it was one of those things where preparation met with luck and I was able to take advantage of someone's desire to get that car off the lot as soon as possible.

At this point - yes. Now, if it ends up being a mechanical nightmare between now and then, my mind will likely change. In the meantime, I've got something to help me out if there's anything catastrophic (which on this car would mean something really bad with the V-10 or the SMG Trans.).

Oh believe me, I know. The only other M5 with anywhere close to the same miles, that was in this price range, was one that had been through 4 owners and had a run-in with a deer. I found nothing else within 5,000 miles of the one I bought for less than $44K.

Since I got it home, I've had the car thoroughly inspected (stem to stern) and found just three relatively minor issues - an A-arm bushing that was worn, missing engine and trans splash pans (that one was weird), and a small seal leak on the rear diff. I had all three taken care of and still came out way ahead of where I'd have been with anything else I found. In the end - I lucked out.

I think this thread has gone off the deep end. No, I'm not buying a used BMW.

I did find an 09 CTS-V with 15K miles for mid $40s in OH but again not going to bite.
I need to test drive the 5.0L and decide if it's worth the $$$. I expect it will be and I will hopefully have one in the garage by the end of the summer.

Oh and the idea that only german cars are fun (paraphrasing a bit) I think this car will be a blast to drive. Do I need/care to autocross it? Absolutely not. Will it provide me with a reason to smile on my way to work....absolutely. Hell my 12 year old TL still provides a lot of fun.

In other news, I rented the Genesis in Ft. Lauderdale on a 4th of July trip. I just found out the wipers are rain sensing. Go figure! Hyundai really did put a lot of thought into this car. They have officially advanced to the next level.

This should have been the next RL.

That's why economists speak about differential utility curves. No two consumers are likely to have identical opinions. The point then becomes - personal preference is not a valid source of criticism of anyone's purchasing habits.

exactly . Thats why i threw the" no shots " in there. I am a firm believer in the you only live once statement. So you have to live you're life the way you want to.. I used to be a person that purchased older vehicles i've only owned 2 brand new cars.

As i go up in price with cars my taste's change and expectations from cars change. I just spent 36K on a car my next car is going to be up in the 40's or 50 range and if i still am as cheap as i am now then i will prob end up with another older car maybe 2 to 3 years older to not have to spend 50K.

Yep. I bought my TL new in August 2006 with 18 miles on the odometer. This time, I knew I wanted something higher up the automotive "food chain", so to speak. I decided to check out used for three reasons - 1) let someone else eat the depreciation; 2) the SUBSTANTIAL improvement in automotive quality in the last 15 years; and 3) I felt like I might be able to find something truly special for a big discount. When I found that one of my "dream" cars was in my price range, I started looking in earnest - now I'm an M5 owner.

Crap...I'm derailing again. SORRY NSXNEXT! Still love your blue NSX! Another one of my "dream" cars.

LOL! Yeah, you have to know what you're getting into.

When I was driving it back to Phoenix from the dealership in Ontario, CA I managed to get just under 21 on the highway...I was pleasantly surprised. Around town, my trip computer is telling me I'm getting exactly 15.0 on my current tank. Previous tanks, that might have had some more...ahem...spirited driving associated with them, were a little less. Did I mention that I discovered "launch control" last Thursday?

If you are going to spend $47K on a Hyundai...

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...r_id=301496519

Plus in 3-5 years it will likely keep a lot more of it's value.

Op have you checked out a GXP in person? For 35k you'll get a low mile, certified with warranty awesome sedan. Just have to look past some shortcomings in the luxury department.

On the other hand youre getting a performance sedan that rivals the m5 in performance, 25-28mpg hwy, and when the car is out of warranty you know you can work on it yourself. Don't even get me started on mods, yum.

Motor Trend got a 4.8 0-60 time; C&D or R&T should be able to shave off a tenth or two.

The finished product surprised us on the real-world blacktop. The R-Spec was composed in and out of corners and wore its 4199 pounds well. Compared to the 4.6, excessive body lean is nearly cured in the 5.0, which pushes when spurred aggressively (thank its burliness and 54/46 front/rear weight distribution). Although weighty and more communicative, the steering still lacks the directness of some of its German rivals.

Its stiffer ride will have you thinking "sportscar," not "luxury sedan." Off smooth paths, the suspension is confused and bouncy at times, yet capable of absorbing mountainous acne. A week's worth of passengers complained not once -- just don't expect the Genesis' usual Lay-Z-Boy ride anymore.

Like the transmission it's bolted to, the V-8 heart is as smooth and as quiet as they come. While welcome for those who appreciate the subdued nature of a Lexus LS V-8, the R-Spec's quiet demeanor is a quality that ultimately disappoints -- an "R" on the tail necessitates a voice that should be more enticing than a muffled burble.

Even so, here is a Korean sedan as quick to 60 mph as a BMW 550i (4.8 seconds) and faster over a quarter-mile than a Ford Mustang V-6 (13.3 seconds at 107.1 mph vs. 13.7 sec @ 102.0 mph). It demolishes the 4.6's figure-eight time by nearly 1 second (26.3 seconds at 0.68 g) and consistently stops three feet shorter from 60 mph (109 feet). It also pulls an average 0.87 g on the skidpad (up from 0.86 g).
