Bummer!

Good things come to those who wait. There's an R-Spec with your name on it out there somewhere. It'll find you at the right time

Yeah I kind of expected this to happen. As an FTE of a large IT/management consulting firm I'm still earning a salary. I haven't been on the bench in years so I get a nice paid vacation for a couple of weeks.

You do realize that in my price range ($6k) the cars you mentioned would have been at the most 17 years old?

I would have bought a 300ZX Twin-Turbo if I could find one but they were either very nice and $10k or crappy and $3k.

I don't know where do you live, I'm in Seattle and 3 years ago I got a gorgeaous 2000 Celica GTS, immaculate indeed, for my stepson for about 6.5K...and it wasn't a particularly special deal, prices for similar cars were in that range.

I saw a '97 3000 gt VR-4 in very good condition for about 8K or so and I was VERY tempted to get it just for the fun of it.
We are talking about almost Ferrari F355 fast, definitely faster than a 348...

I quickly browsed Craigslist for my area and I found many Japanese models, in my opinion much more fun to drive than a 328 for 6-8K, high end well kept Preludes for $4-5K a dime a dozen. Miatas too, a dime a dozen....

Celica GT Four, MR2 in that price range too...

This 94 Miata has been kept in obscenely mint condition (1994), my stepson second car.....this pic is before tuning, when we just got it....$3K

I trust older Japanese cars more than German...

Unfortunately the 300 ZX is starting to become slowly a classic and prices are on the rise...I suspect the window of opportunity for the 3000 GT is rapidly closing....

Celica GTS is not as fun as a 328i. The driving dynamics of it is totally different. Let alone the celica is fwd.

VR4? Sure nice car but not that easy to find plus you say its almost 355 fast? Its not. F355 was a low 13second car... VR4 was maybe around high 13 if not slower. Plus it was a porker.

Miata is a good choice but not much power. MR2 would be cool but I find them to be ugly.

Of course I personally thought he bought a great E36 for the price he paid. I would have done the same.

Have you ever drove a Celica GTS??? If you do not find it as fun, evidently you did not...not to mention the exotic look, almost "Lamborghinesque"....
If you turn down any FWD because it is FWD I suspect you did not drive many "right" front drivers..

This Alfa 156...

...and its predecessor, the 155

....won several European Motorsport competitons in the 90's in front of the BMW 3 Series before Alfa Romeo withdrew from racing....so dismissing a FWD in general is simplistic at best...

Or you could get e Celica Turbo AWD....that is not fun either??

VR4? Sure nice car but not that easy to find plus you say its almost 355 fast? Its not. F355 was a low 13second car... VR4 was maybe around high 13 if not slower. Plus it was a porker.
I said almost...not as fast...and it is almost indeed....I know of stock VR4s that run 0-60 in the mid 4....you cannot really complain for the price (continuously rising nowadays)...a porker....compared to a 355 yes...but the 3000 GT was one of the most technolgical sophisticated mass produced car of its time and it was a comfortable 2+2....it was as lighter as it possibly could....you could travel from Seattle to LA in one comfortably....a F355 would become annoying after 200 miles...an extra positive factor is that the 3000 GT are relatively easy to work with, considering the type of vehicle, and not outrageously expensive to fix....

Miata is a good choice but not much power.
130 HP on a 2000 lb car can be quite peppy....and the Miata is fun beyond the pure 0-60 numbers.....heck if you look only for brutal acceleration on a budget you could get a Pontiac Firebird or a Camaro from the 90's....still a looker and with the additional bonus of the gorgeaous sound of a V8....

Furthermore the Miatas are so easy and cheap to soup up.....my stepson's Miata with the Turbo kit should be at 180-200 horses....trust me it is a rocket...

Argument is done anyways. I am not about to reply to someone who thinks a celica has Lamborghini looks and compares a VR4 to a ferrari F355.

...and it seems that I wasted my time (it is Car Talk after all isn't it??) with someone thinking that any FWD is crap and probably (surely) has never driven a VR4 nor does understand the difference between saying "almost F355 fast" and comparing a VR4 to a F355 as a whole....

Never said FWD sucked. Intergra Type-R was one of the best handling cars i have driven.

You'd shit your pants if i listed the cars i have driven in the past, which includes the celica GTS and VR4.

As they say, to each their own.

Exactly, me either. A FWD 4-cylinder vs. a RWD 6-cylinder that are two years apart.

So we went from Civics to fucking Celicas... Nice. I heard there is a four door RSX out in the near future, just get that. You'll be able to fit several strollers in there and ample head room!

Don't worry kid...I know that brain is optional for some forum members.....handling...let's see...

Vairano Handling Course, Italy one of handling testing ground in Europe for car makers.

The new Ford Focus RS500 (not imported in USA...and that doesn't surprise me...)

FWD, 345 HP, 6 speed manual

Lapped in 1:22:21, only 1,3 sec. slower than the M3 CLS (E46) which is 200 lbs lighter and with 15 additional horsepower.

The M3 E90 sedan (V8, 414 HP) and the M3 E92 coupe (the latter with a dual clutch transmission) are 1.5 sec. and 1.6 sec. faster, respectively, than the RS500.

...and the M3 is the benchmark for non-exotic car handling...

http://www.fastestlaps.com/tracks/va...ng_course.html

Ford Focus RS500

These are the pesky numbers, the rest is conversation, ill-informed opinions and brain farts...enough of thread hijacking....see ya...
