I'm sure there are some places where it wouldn't be a good idea to go with $$$ gear. I've been lucky so far I suppose.
Besides think about being struck in the side of the head with tripod with a ball head attached.

Yeah, I should just pony up and go out on my own. I'll try and do that this and next weekend. My camera has been sitting idle for far too long due to a horrid winter and lots of house projects going on.

Just watch were you go. Some places are private and you need permission to photo there. Otherwise I try to travel as light as possible and leave non essentials in my car or at home.

It can be quite challenging but it is a lot of fun. Some of the pros use high dollar dedicated CCD cameras but it's amazing what can be done with a proper mount and a DSLR. Your sig says you're in Arizona and that, sir, is prime real estate for astropotographers. They have some of the darkest skies in the country
Here's a good place to learn and see some extremely beautiful pictures done by amateur astrophotographers. Enjoy!

I like the compositions of the 2nd and 3rd photos...but you are REALLY pushing the limits of image file with the amount of processing your slapping on them, its very appealing imo. Dial back for more success.

Awhile back I posted up an 11 shot vertical pano of the Milky way. Anyways this is from the same location but was just a normal horizontal shot @ 14mm, thought it was pretty cool since I got a faint shooting star going thru the milky way .

you would need more lights OR ONE very powerful light, but backed up further for more even lighting (inverse square law)
