That's a really good first attempt at a portrait shot. Bokeh is strong with that one. Beauty dish or reflector if you decide to get more into it.

Needs more Lemon Pledge
MattG,
I love the setting, looks amazing!
Based on the light (coming from camera left), I might have turned the entire setup 90 degrees to the subject's right to get that soft low light directly on her face. It may also have allowed the wind to blow her hair out of her face rather than in to it. I am not sure what the background would be for that though. Just a thought.

Depending which lights you use, I find it best to splice a good piece of speaker wire between the lights and battery pack. Just gives it a little more girth to spin and control. Plus the thin wire that they use to make them, breaks pretty fast when spinning, cutting the current from battery pack.

Keep her where she is and use a soft bounce to give a tad more fill.
OR
Turn her around and the sun a backlight and use a bounce to key one side or all of her face.
But most importantly...get her hair out of her face!

I shoot people
Haleakala Summit/Maui
from our trip to Maui last week...
I'm normally not a fan of lens flare, but it was going to be another 3 hours or so before the sun got high enough to be out of the frame... and we had gotten on the road @2:30am to reach the summit for the sunrise, and by this time we were starving (they don't serve food up there). There's no way we were going to wait around. I snapped a few pics and we headed down the mountain (which was another hour drive)

Burning Brakes
Awhile back I bought a Sekonic L-758 light meter along with a ring light and collapsible background that has just sat in the closet. So wife and I got bored and figured I would try them out. So this is my first attempt at shooting a studio style portrait with 5D3 and Rokinon 85 1.4 @1.4. As I said the is my first try at shooting studio type shots and I had a little difficulty doing it but was kind of happy with how this shot turned out.

I miss my 03 CL-S :(
Hah! If you like that type of photography, check out David Levinthal's work (http://www.davidlevinthal.com/works.html) - I saw him speak at the Corcoran just before his exhibit opened there... Awesome photography, and hearing the story behind his photos was super interesting. Recommend his book "Hitler Moves East" (

[QUOTE=MSW 6SP;15043517]I bought a Nikkon D5300. I am not sure how to use it yet but the learning process is fun.
If you're learning AND having fun you're halfway there.
Enjoy!
