The VCM is only used in V6 applications - so that rules out the RDX or the CR-V. The MDX, though, I don't know why it's not used there. My guess would be because it needs all the ponies it can grab hold of, but then that really doesn't explain why it's used in the Odyssey which is also a porker in its own right.

Question Interesting

But does the Civic (hybrid) not use it? If not, they really should add it to 4 cylinder engines bc every mpg on that sticker counts nowadayz especially w/ Toyota's new line of engines.

Oh yeah, they should slap that in the RL as well ... cannot hurt @ this point.

It doesn't need all the ponies it can grab hold of when cruising, which is exactly when VCM switches on.

I think the MDX does not have it because it is a relatively new size (3.7l) and may ahve introduced some lack-of-refinement when switching from 6cyl to 3cyl operation that has already been worked out for the 3.5l engine. We may see it later on maybe at the MMY refresh.

The current gen of VCM is a joke. Hopefully the next gen will produce greater MPG savings. 95% of the peeps on the Odyssey forums think it's a joke.

I think this is BEAUTIFUL! It has a much more European look, which is great! Now, can you imagine how gorgeous the sedan is going to be? I can't wait!

Thank goodness the Accord is looking this great, considering how disappointing the Advanced Sports Concept was...

car looks much better than the current gen...

it's nice...until you see the car from the side profile. The front end is too flat and raked high and just doesnt flow with the rest of the body and there's too much glass running along the rear sides. From other angles though, it looks good.

The front end is a little too busy but over-all the car is not bad. And its much better than the current ultra-bland Accord Coupe.

My understanding is VCM deactivates one bank of cylinders. And I4 engines only have one bank to begin with so it wouldn't work. Unless I'm wrong?

Cool Just Looked Up Some Info on VCM

Car & Driver
Interestingly, although the Civic can’t move away from a stop using only the electric motor, Honda says there is one situation where its hybrid can run on just electricity—at about 15 to 20 mph when cruising on a flat surface at a steady speed with a fully charged, or nearly so, battery pack. Since the electric motor and the gas engine rotate inseparably, the Civic must cut off fuel to the engine and use its variable-valve-timing system to close the engine’s valves and make it easier for the electric motor to do its job.
So I guess w/ 4 cylinder engines they just completely shut off which sounds like a plus to me. w/out the Insight (I still do not understand Honda/Acura's incessant need to completely kill off a model before coming out w/ something similar) Honda may not be able to keep the claim of having the vehicle w/ the most mpg & the carmaker w/ highest mpg average.

Oh & the Accord ain't so cute from the side ... roofline?

IMO it doesn't need to look cute. The more I see, the more I likeee!

It will be interesting to see the final production version.

But why can't Honda call it the new Prelude?

Accord conjures up a too pedestrian image.

Do not be too hard on the design. Wait tell you see the new TSX & TL…

I suspect the high hood and grill are the result of Europe’s pedestrian (j-walk) law that autos must be friendly to said pedestrian by having so much clearance between engine and hood…crush zone….may come to USA.....also front end to handle impact with other bumpers of different height...

It will sell with a V-6, regular gas, more HP, better MPG...nice looks...lets hope handling and trans options are improved...

The Accord makes the Altima seem dated already ... Though in a year the Accord's design could be the one that's dated. Taking a risk with designs is something you have to face I guess as a manufacturer.

Both are attractive cars whose profile is NOT their best angle. I would lean towards the Accord simply because Honda's options are usually packaged much better.

That would make a lot of sense if Honda plans to export the USDM Accord coupe.

I think it's a difficult choice. The Altima does look cleaner. The Accord has more detailing, so that might actually turn some people away. And from that side profile, it has quite a nose.

I know and that Altima isn't the SE-R either whereas the Accord certainly is being shown with Honda's most sporting offerings (even if it's conceptual) ... My $.02 is that the sheet metal doesn't change all that much. The 18s or 20s or whatever they are aren't gonna be on the production model but I could see most of the rest of the car making it.

This Accord Coupe Concept looks pretty production ready already. Does anyone really, honestly think that it looks outrageous in anyway that needs to be toned down for production?

No, and in past shows the same car could have been called "pre-production" to signify that it's pretty close to prime time.

Yes, unfortunately if a big enough market requires something be done to a car then the maker sometimes just incorporates that in the line for the whole world. Take the 3rd brake light for example - for years models outside the US didn't have it - but now since it might cost more to leave it out, in other markets all over the world get it.

Appears you and ostrich are right on.....from SVP Honda at press conf Detroit 1/8/07:

"For the 2008 model year, Accord enters its 32nd year and 8th generation. And before I continue I should tell you that the styling concept you see here is an accurate representation of what the next generation Accord coupe will look like. "
