If there's a fire under the hood, that blanket certainly isn't going to put it out. Damage is done by that point. Carry a fire extinguisher if you're that worried about it.

Finally got the time to install the spacer last night.

I actually milled the factory IM spacer down 7mm. I also purchased 100mm bolts(they were from Fastenel and have used a Allen wrench to tighten) and the studs from the dealer, as well as 7 washers.

Factory spacer = 1 5/8" (41.275mm)
After milling = 1 3/8" (34.275mm)

~16% reduction in height.

I removed the liner on the bottom of the hood. I was able to connect the brake booster hose back on with no issues (I have the RV-6 strut bar) as well as the sensor next to it. It clears the strut bar, but is pretty close. During testing I have not heard any bumping on the strut bar. I was able to close the hood as well without it hitting. Testing also showed that it did not hit the hood. No other mods to the hood other then removing the liner. I have not attempted to put the engine cover back on yet.

You can tell there is a gain in tq. This is very evident when in 6th gear and you get on it.

Glad the milling worked out! Were you able to keep your Outlaw spacer on? I took mine off during install to prevent issues.

I actually left it off. Not all that worried about it. It actually stayed pretty cool after the test run. I think it is able to circulate more air around the IM now.

So can this be installed without leaving off engine covers or removed hood insulation, etc? I'm interested in doing this too, but my mechanical know-how is...on the sub-par level :P

jerome736,

Not trying to be disrespectful, but just trying to give you a clear answer.

Don't try this mod. This mod requires custom work, not a simple "remove old part, bolt on new part". There are too many gotcha's (pitfalls) if you are not mechanically inclined.

Thanks! That was kind of the response I was looking for. I did read page to page to a certain extent, but it seemed like people were trying different things. I'll keep my hands off my spacer for now :p

All is good. It cannot void your warranty (blah blah blah).

Still happy with the results. No engine cover though.

After having this on for a week now and the ECU finally relearning everything, not to mention some cool temps outside, it is so much fun! I could really feel the TQ difference with it. I was playing around last night and WOW! The pull in 1st through 3rd is insane.

JUST TO CLEAR THINGS UP

I'd say the insulators primary purpose may be fire safety, but it does offer a lot of sound dampening.

Black -05,

Well done. If I was to do it I would go down this route also. Looking for some more low end tq with the manual trans. Do you think this would work with the stock bar or is it to low? And did you try the engine cover back on yet?

Thanks, ML

There is no denying the extra tq gain. You will be pleased!

If you only use the stock gaskets with the spacer, it will fit. It might be a snug fit, but it's doable. At least for me anyway.

You can forget about the engine cover, it won't fit.

It would work with the stock bar, but you would need to leave one of the sensors unbolted. It is only bolted to the manifold so a short hose can get to it. You can zip tie it up to something rather then bolting it to the manifold. The brake booster hose may be your only issue. I have not put the engine cover back on. I have a feeling the manifold is VERY close to the hood, but is not touching it.

I got the sensor to fit, but it was very close to the bar. I cut the booster hose shorter so it was not too snug. Others say their having issues; not sure if my motor mounts change the position of the motor at all.

All mine fit with the RV-6 bar and the 7mm shaved off. This is why I could not give a definitive answer on it fitting with the stock bar.

All my sensors and hoses bolted back up, although some of the hoses were a bit stretched and my AEM throttle body boot barely made the reach.

I mod'd the brake booster line, though I have an RV-6 bar. Now, there is a 1/4" gap between the brake booster hose and RV-6 bar. Also, yeah, no matter what - no cover. I tried it again and it rubbed (even with my modified hood attempts). The car is so great now. I had to get a new radar detector with longer range.

I am thinking about adding this mod to my list. If I do decide to do it I will get milled down much like acura_05 did but maybe just a little more as I have the fat stock strut bar and plan on leaving the P2R on. How thick is the underhood insulator? if I have to trim it to fit under the strut how much more do you think I would have to go to be able to leave on the hood insulation? would the mod be worth it at that point? I want to keep my car looking as oem as possible. Also we saw a change on the dyno with the full thickness of the spacer, I am curious to see if the gains drop linear with the thickness or even pick up or what.. any insight please
thanks

Toss the insulator - if cut will just make a mess and lose it's rigity.

As a rough estimate (in light of nothing else), I would very much use this as a guideline. The gains would change in proportion to the change in length (runner length).

Not in this case. Only in an extreme case of using a longer and longer spacer where you would find the optimum runner length. But, not in this case.

mine wasn't stock when I did this mod, but I did have to take the spacer off for a while. The low and mid range punch is noticeable. Got better results with the debatable ECU reset. I based this simply on the 'spinning tires' test. they rolled easier post reset.

you'll have to wait till the pro's with the schematic views start replying. Start by finding the exploded view of the J30A4's intake manifold. usually it will be pretty apparent just by the shape of your gasket if it's gonna work. you could print out one of the ga'zillion shots of the spacer in this thread and hold it up to your broken down IM section.

It won't clear the hood on the 2G TL/CL guys from what I've read.

an honest question to you.....i dont feel comfy cutting the hood or taking the insulation off....do u think it will work for me ???

I dont mind milling down the spacer but dont want the gains to disappear !!!! what do u suggest ??

Taking off the insulation won't harm ur car or engine in any way. But mill it down if u feel more comfortabe.

I took a wild guess at the 7mm based on all the info provided in this thread, so I am grateful to everyone that gave input into this thread. Once I get some time, I am going to install it. I also picked up some M8x100mm socket head bolts from fastenel. I hope to get some time this weekend to get it done and post some pictures. I do hate that I am not going to be able to use my lovely MB carbon cover anymore!!

With the milling, you can take off the 7mm like I did. I still had to remove the insulator, but everything else cleared fine. Well worth the money!

As mentioned above, you will need to remove the insulator and leave off the engine cover (reduced weight!!! ), you won't notice. 7mm seamed to be the magic # for me.
