That said, it's easy to get a flawed vision of what is really happening with your car sometimes. Line up a few maintenance item over a period of a few months and it seems like the car is costing you a lot. You just forget you didn't spend a dime except for oil changes in the past 5 years...



Edit: Talking about oil again, they do the biz for $15 near my place. It's at the sort of price where I'm really starting to think whether or not it's worth getting under the car and dealing with used oil and yadda yadda. But I'm so sketchy when it comes to people touching my car.

That's my problem. I just dont trust shops to do it. I've heard enough horror stories of idiots filling the engine with oil until it comes out of the fill hole

The other issue is waiting or having to make an appointment. It's just annoying. There has been a couple times where we had Wifey's Sonata done at a quick lube place when we were on the road. Once was in Victoria, another in Canmore and once in Calgary. Im a stickler with the maintenance intervals on that car, due to the turbo.

Pretty much that. Other than me and my uncle I don't like anyone touching the car. Last fall when I had to do an oil change and I had no time I got it done and as soon as I got in the parking lot I checked the filter and drain bolt to make sure there were no drips.

Duuuude, $15 and like 10 minutes, no rolling around in the parking lot. I live on the 4th floor of my building, gotta bring down the jack, jack stands, wheel chocks, oil pan and container then jack the car, drain the oil, put new one in, bring everything back upstairs.
It's been windy for like a week too, last weekend when I did ATF drain and fill I got sandblasted. I'm still finding sand in my butt crack.

$15 is great except when they round out your fill bolt or strip your threads. Best case, new pan, worst case, new engine. That $15 was sure worth it. Some of those places have been caught red handed for not even changing the oil.. those customers got off easy in my book.

Oh you bought expensive primo syn oil, sure we'll put that in instead of our other crap.. steals your oil to put in their personal car, puts in shit dino oil in your ride instead. Never in the history of a lube shop has anyone gone in and left satisfied and job well done in 10 minutes.

I don't find immense joy changing the oil. I have a system to doing things and it works out well. I still get a tad paranoid about tightening the drain bolt after all these years, but I find absolute solace in the fact that I know the job was done right. It's nice to pull up to a valet, hand them the keys and enjoy your evening.
