I was thinking of buying a small 9mm just for safety (something to keep in the house, just incase)....we were giving it deep thought....after seeing your collection, am just gonna tell the wifey "fuq that, lets just get it" LOL
of course we will go through training before we even buy it....just thought I put it out there...

If you buy a .22 pistol get the Ruger sr22. Awesome little gun. Thats what my wife has. I got the S&W mp22 and it is ok but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
As far as 9 mm look at the FNH FNX-9. Full size yet small gun, SA/DA with a hammer, polymer lower, decock/safety. Amazing gun with great reviews.
I just got some FNH 16" barrels in for a couple more ar upper builds.

Take a handgun / conceal carry course.. shoot several guns, all calibers.
Most important rule, don't point the gun at anything you don't intend to shoot.
Take your wife too.. make sure she knows rule #1. I took a group out shooting, most of them first timers.. one of the girls was shooting a 38.. first fucking thing she does after firing the first shot is turn back to everyone and laugh.. pointing the gun at everyone doing so.
Don't do that.

I have a couple .380s which is a hair smaller than 9mm. A 9mm would be fine for you and her to shoot.
I would prefer a .40 cal over a 9mm personally.
The .22 lr are more for range time purposes and familiarity and training for cheaper costs.
But some say a .22lr is a good home defense weapon because you can fire 10 rounds just as fast as 2 rounds of a .45ACP due to no recoil.
I can shoot a 1.5 inch group at 5 yards with 10 shots of the .22lr in about 3 seconds.
With the .45 I can not get anywhere near that. Especially with a 4 inch barrel.
But 1 shot in the chest with a .45 and its pretty much over for him.
I paid under 700.00 for my 2 .22 lr pistols last year when I bought them. And the wife has been bugging me to go to the range.
She loves shooting now. She was raised by parents who never had a gun in the house. And I have had a pistol in my possession since I was 18, I bought my first pistol when I was 21, ever since we started dating and before I have always had a gun in my house.
When I sold my H2B civic I had no hobbies, so I started buying guns and such. Since I bought the TL I have been split between guns and car parts again.
But with recent events I have stopped buying car parts and am back into guns.
I do not have a concealed permit at the moment, but have had one in Tennessee and in South Dakota before.
My state laws allow for open carry in public and concealed carry inside my vehicle.
But I have taken a class in this state just at the time I had to wait due to a DUI.

And don't shoot a hand cannon.. you'll likely bump the trigger on the recoil and blow the top of your head off or the person behind you.
At minimum you'll smack your forehead.

Actually I disagree with rule #1.
Rule #1 is: Treat every gun as if it was loaded
There are 4 main rules about gun handling. I will have to dig them up but I have some home security issues to deal with.
Damn smoke detector is linked to home system and batteries are dead and they require a special battery. 1st world problems.

Colt is over-rated I agree. And even a low-end rifle is gonna be expensive right now.
Then try to find mags or ammo for it.
I am awaiting 3 stripped lowers from www.coderedfirearms.com they have not price gouged the market but there is a 6-8 week wait time right now. Price is 150.00 for lower.
But finding lower parts kits in stock and under 100.00 is a chore.
CMMG parts kits are going for 125.00 to 150.00 right now. Last parts kit I bought was from PSA for 35.00.
I am awaiting 3 lower parts kits from White Oak Armament that I paid about 70.00 each.
Butt stocks are up in price also. As well as upper receivers, BCG (bolt carrier group) which I paid 130.00 for a full auto M16 BCG is now 325.00 easy.
Charging handles are hard to find but I found some BCM gunfighters for 48.00 which is a good price for those and they are nice.
Hand guards stayed about the same in price.
Barrels went up about 100.00
Gas blocks and tubes are hard to find.
I rifle I could build for 650.00 October last year now costs me about 1200.00 if I wait and find the parts cheap and in stock.
But that beats paying the 2000.00 gun stores and people are charging if you can even find them in stock. Then most of those are built, and that makes me question who built it and the reliability of the weapon.
But a clean and well oiled AR-15 is one of the best weapons you can own. Right next to the AK47 which I also own.

So far this month, Chicago with the strictest gun control in the nation has had 42 gun related murders.
They had 513 last year which was more than all US soldiers killed in Afghanistan in 2012.
A gun free city with more gun crime than a WAR! Tell me how that works.

umm not trying to start a political debate....was just wondering what you go with the assault weapons? certainly you dont go hunting with them....even if you buy it or order a kit and make it, where do you fire? who do you fire at....you dont just pop rounds towards the sky right....
