Anyone ?
Not sure the exact weight but its really heavy. Probably 150-200 pounds. You'll need to ship it freight.

Hello All,

Just trying to keep this post active. The wife drives a white 2001 CL Type S and at the beginning of the summer, the trans started slipping. Several years ago we had taken it in to the dealership for the warranty check and service, and they determined that the oil jet kit was appropriate for this specimen. At that point I also had a 2001 Black CL Type S Nav, and it got a new tranny. I have since sold the Black one, as I never drove it and it was expensive to insure. I drove too many miles per day to warrant driving a powerful V6 car, (Even though it was very comfortable). Instead I picked up a 93 Civic Hatchback CX model, it gets 40 mpg on a good day. The wife drives 10 miles to work, one way, so keeping hers was fine. It is a repaired salvage, so selling or trading it was not really an option. Besides, she likes it.

Anyway, like I said, at the beginning of the summer it started slipping. We took it back to the dealer and were told it needed $6000 worth of work as the warranty had just expired and it was a salvage title. At that point they were selling a 2001 CL Type S on the lot for $8000. Obviously I was not going to put $6000 into a car that was only worth $8000 even if it was not a salvage. We checked at Aamco to have them rebuild the transmission, and it was still about $2500 - $3500. I decided not to have it rebuilt, as I didn't want to spend that kind of money on a poorly designed transmission. That's when I found this thread. Since that day, I have dreamed about changing the transmission to one that is more reliable. She's been driving another vehicle so as not to make the tranny any worse, and I have been collecting tools. I am quickly approaching the time to start this project, and I am really looking forward to it.

I asked my local repair shop if they would do it, but they really don't want to put the "wrong" transmission in the car. I can see their point, how can they warranty it? Actaully the one technician is a dealer trained Honda tech, and he was excited about possibly doing it, but the owner said no way. He offered to help on a consulting basis, they just can't do it at their shop. I have a large, insulated, heated, well lit, concrete floor, garage.

I have a couple more tools to line up, then I'll be looking for a used transmission. I'm looking forward to getting this car back on the road! I'd like to thank everyone for their responses in this thread. This really opens up another option to extend the life of these awesome cars!

Wow. G'luck on the DIY! Take lots of pics.

...of the transmission swap, not yourself. Well, OK, maybe a few of the wife & how happy she is to have her old car back.

I will be documenting the swap as best as I can when I get around to it as well. I enjoy documenting car builds, projects, and things like this. You can check out my latest build here:

http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/drag-r...ld-thread.html

Thats the shorter version, covering this summers work.

Here is the full version, from stock to 9.878 @ 134.48

So I should have this pretty well covered for you guys

he said 250lbs and shipping was 350 door to door residential. I'm trying to find one local now to cut out the 350 charge.I'm trying not to spend no more than 700 if it's possible.

Also I have read that you need to swap over the filter housing, so does that mean I would need a CL filter or do I need to get one for the Odyssey? Speaking of filters I was looking around at them (well trying to) and found one that says its internal to the trans and not part of regular maintenance (this was for the Odyssey trans). Does that sound right or is there only one filter on these things? Last one, about how much fluid will I need to fill this thing up? I plan on flushing it which will take 14qts (my boss has a T-Tech machine at his house ) but I need to make sure I get enough fluid to fill it up first.

Sorry for all of the questions, but I am doing this myself and I am trying to go in prepared. Any other info on this anyone can give me I would really appreciate. Thanks in advance for the help guys. I will try my best to document the swap for you guys when I do it in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks,
Sean
You would use the CL filter. Yes, the filter is replaceable. Im not sure how much fluid is required.

OK, Like I said, I'm collecting tools. Today was a good day. About a week ago I found a good condition Cherry Picker on Craigslist and picked it up. I got myself a load leveler and some chains, lifting straps, and hooks. Today I made the big jump. I've had my mind set on a Bend-pak lift to make this process easier. I've been saving my pennies, and I have the wife talked into it. Today, I ordered it. Supposedly it will ship today or tomorrow and should be at the trucking depot by Friday. I decided to have it shipped to the trucking depot, and I'll go get it with a trailer. Doing it that way was cheaper then renting a forklift. That way I can back the trailer into the garage, and unload the lift one piece at time. It's been getting cold here in Ohio, so I'd rather do it inside. I know that a lift was not required to do this, but it will make life much easier. Also I'll have it to do other work as well. It will be time to start shoping for a tranny soon!

Well I am all ready to go (I think). I ordered a filter from Acura, have some Honda ATF, a B&M trans cooler with extra line, and should be getting my trans today. I picked up a 2006 Odyssey EX trans with 29,000 miles for $1,150 shipped. I should be starting to disassemble everything this weekend, and will probably wait till the following weekend to put it all back together. Like I have said before I will do my best to document the whole process.

I do have one more question though. I have see the thread, and other talk about an upgraded PCM when Acura does the trans. Is this something I should be looking to try and take care of as well? If this is something I should be concerned with doing, how would I go about it? Could I bring it to the dealer for just the PCM? was it a flash, or whole new unit? Is there an aftermarket option out there?

Thanks,
Sean

As far as the tranny pcm, your old one should be fine. Ive heard from some that when they take their car in the dealer says they need a new pcm for the tranny but it isnt needed.

Well I have all the answers I need (for now), I got the last of the parts today, camera is charged and ready to go (as always), and now I just have to wiat untill Friday!! This weekend will just be the removal so I have plenty of time for documentation. The plan is to take it all apart, get the trans out, swpap the needed parts, make any modifications to the trans I may need to, install my trans cooler and call it a weekend. Then next weekend put the new trans in, put in my intake, put everything back together, and bring it by my bosses house to do a T-Tech (trans flush). Should be a fun couple of weekends. Who knows, if I have time Ill pull the trans out of the race car while Im at it, gotta swap the converter sometime this winter anyway.

Most interested in the steps for the tranny modification. Everything else can be gotten from the service manual.
I hope you have one of those too.

No service manual needed. I have done much harder stuff to a car than a trans swap.

I have a feeling going in will be much easier than coming out. I wont have to deal with a stuck converter on the way back in. I haven't decided if I want to put the pictures up now of what is done so far, or wait until it is all done and do it in one post. I can tell you now that I do not have to drill my transmission though. I think someone was looking for info on that specifically.

I dont remember seeing anything about that, but it could be true. I plan on swapping over the filter stuff this weekend before putting the trans in. I am putting a trans cooler in, so I will be eliminating the factory cooler/warmer thing that is in there. I haven't seen a specific write up on how you eliminate the factory one, but it is mentioned in the (not so good) Comptech instructions. So I guess we will see what mods I really need to do to the trans come this weekend. That part will be well documented because it will be much easier to take pictures of. It was not to easy to pull the trans, and take pictures by myself this weekend

Well, the lift arrived and I an in the process of putting it together. The Cherry Picker really earned it's keep in moving the heavy pieces of the lift around. Especially since I am working alone. I'm hoping to be going on the tranny early in the new year!

Ill have the same amount of help this time too. I just found out my buddy is working Saturday again, so I am on my own till later in the day. This time around though all I can do is wait really. I will have plenty of time to swap the parts around, and get the car ready to put the new trans in. Then I will be waiting for him to get back so we can muscle this thing in and then put it all back together. So I guess it will be good having the time to swap the parts around so I can really document that part well. It seems that is the part most people want to see in detail anyway.

Well it is in, and I drove it home. I need to adjust the shifter cable, and the gear indicator switch (I think I need to adjust the switch). But it drives great, shifts nice and everything. I have noticed that my auto (up and down) on the drivers window is not working. Also the passenger mirror doesn't point down when I have it in reverse. The reverse lights come on, and it will say its in reverse on the dash but the stick is not exactly where it should be since the cable needs adjustment. So who knows how to adjust those things, and why the window and mirror are not working?!?! I am sure someone can point me in the right direction.

Quick update, the mirror worked this morning. So I think it is just some adjustment of the switch for that one.

I think you need to reprogram the auto up/down on the window. Not sure how to do it but someone here should know.

Good to hear everything is working fine. Now where is that DIY you promised? lol

Make sure the mirror switch on the door isn't set to the passenger side mirror, otherwise it wont move.

For the window, roll it down all the way and keep holding the switch for 3 seconds, then roll it up all the way and hold it for 3 seconds. Programmed.

The shifter seems to be slightly off. It's not much, but it is a little forward of each spot. I tried the manual location once, and it would not really stay in that mode. I have seen how to adjust some other acuras but not the CL specifically. I think I need to pull the center console, and it is adjusted on that end but I am mot 100%. I probably won't have time to work on it again for a few weeks anyway.

There are two different adjustments.

1) Yes, pull the cetner console and there is a 14mm nut that holds the cable to the shifter, get that setteled on the detent for park or neutral.
2) 2 10mm blots that hold the range switch in, after setting park on the shifter get the range switch adjusted to show park on the cluster.
