I'm getting the P1706 CEL when driving at times. Around the time I get the code, 2 and 3rd gear shift hard and the rest are smooth.

I did a search on it and they are saying it means the computer doesn't know what gear its in so since I don't have a manual for this car can anyone help me out?

DTC P1706: Open in Transmission Range Switch Circuit

NOTE: Record all freeze data and review General Troubleshooting Information before you troubleshoot.

1.Test the transmission range switch. Is the switch OK ? YES - Go to step 2. NO - Replace the transmission range switch.
2.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

3.Check for continuity between body ground and PCM connector terminals B20 and B22 individually. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 4. NO - Repair open in the wires between PCM connector terminals B20, B22 and ground (G101). Repair poor ground (G101).
4.Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
5.Shift to the D5 position.

6.Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals D9 and B20 or B22. Is there voltage? YES - Repair open in the wire between PCM connector terminal D9 and the transmission range switch. NO - Go to step 7.
7.Shift to the R position.

8.Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals D6 and B20 or B22. Is there voltage? YES - Repair open in the wire between PCM connector terminal D6 and the transmission range switch. NO - Go to step 9.
9.Shift to the P or N position.

10.Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals B14 and B20 or B22. Is there voltage? YES - Repair open in the wire between PCM connector terminal B14 and the transmission range switch. NO - Go to step 11.
11.Shift to the D4 position.

12.Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals D8 and B20 or B22. Is there voltage? YES - Repair open in the wire between PCM connector terminal D8 and the transmission range switch. NO - Go to step 13.
13.Shift to the D3 position.

14.Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals D14 and B20 or B22. Is there voltage? YES - Repair open in the wire between PCM connector terminal D14 and the transmission range switch. NO - Go to step 15.
15.Shift to the 2 position.

16.Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals D15 and B20 or B22. Is there voltage? YES - Repair open in the wire between PCM connector terminal D15 and the transmission range switch. NO - Go to step 17.
17.Shift to the N position.

18.Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals D4 and B20 or B22. Is there voltage? YES - Repair open in the wire between PCM connector terminal D4 and the transmission range switch. NO - Check for loose terminal fit in the PCM connector terminals B14, D4, D6, D8, D9, D14 and D15. If necessary, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck.

One of a couple things here.....

1) Lose connection at the range switch.
2) Bad range switch
3) Mis-adjusted range switch

Well I have been looking in the Acuraoemparts.com catalog to use the diagram for the location of the "Transmission Range Switch"

I think I have been through the entire catalog for the Acura Parts on tghe 02 CL-S and cannot find this?

Can anyone tell me if the transmission range switch is the cable that links the gear selector to the transmission?

I think this cause I may have not properly attached the cable on the transmission end after noticing the gear selector has been not shifting as easy as its supposed.

An Example of this is shifting from "P"to "D5", when shifting back from "D5" to Park it feels like the alignment is off.

The selector will get stuck at "N" and won't go past unless I pull it down to "D4" and then go from "D4" to "P".

Which leads me to believe the problem is coming from this issue as when the shifter is in "P" or "R" the lights on the cluster come on.

Or this is an actual electrical connector or Sensor?

Much Thanks and Props to NVA-AV6 for ALL THE GOOD INFORMATION he supplied me with to finish the project.

As I troubleshooted the code I figured the Transmission Range Switch needed to be set at at the same gear as the shift lever is in.

I didn't notice this cause #1 I'm new to working on these Auto trans with all this

After noticing them out of place. Once this was set I was able to shift smoothly down the gears and all the selected gears were lit on my cluster.

So today I was able to take it with me to work for the first time since owning it car and it drove like a champ.

If it wasn't for this thread I would probably have a huge headache and lots of debt right now trying to complete a 6 speed swap.. Would have been fun though! but I bought this car to realx as my other car is 5speed Poor Man Type R

Well,it looks like my luck just ran out.I was driving on the interstate today when my tranny decided to take a powder.Fortunately, there are traffic lights on the highway and I was taking off after the light turned green.I was accelerating but the car just revved up without changing gears.I had to goose the throttle back and forth to try and get it to change gears. It's been doing that for a few weeks now on occasion. This time I got the ol check engine and tcs lights. The car is still driveable so I made a beeline for the house.Earlier I thought I could detect a faint smell of some kind. Now I know it was the tranny. So much for being out of debt, lol.I found some 06 Odyssey trannies online through car-part.com.There's a place in Michigan that has one with 9k miles and one with 16k.They're asking just under a grand for them. Then there's one in Kentucky with 17k miles for less than $870.Since some of you have bought trannies and had them shipped to you, what kind of money are we talking about for shipping?Meanwhile,I guess I'll start shopping around for a mechanic who can do the swap.

I took my TL to the dealership this morning so the service manager could test drive it.He confirmed the bad tranny with the test drive and checking the trouble code on the machine.I left it with them and caught a ride home. They said it would cost about $4k to replace the tranny and let me know they would talk to Acura about my car.The service rep just called a few minutes ago and said that Acura would pay 75% of the cost.So I'm only going to be out a grand for it.What's more,I'll get a 3 year,36k mile warranty. They should have the tranny tomorrow, and I should have my car back Friday afternoon. No salvage yard tranny for me.My thanks again to Don Carlton Acura in Tulsa. These guys are great.Oh,and thanks to Acura for helping me out.

A little over 50,400.I've put less than 16K miles on it since I bought it more than 5 years ago. They started pulling the tranny yesterday in anticipation of receiving the new one today.Turns out they found a cracked engine mount as well which will cost me another $265.This is still much better than I could ever have hoped for.

The dealership called this afternoon and said my car was ready. That's one fast changeout. In any case,it cost me $1,380 and change. Not bad for a tranny with 3 year,36K mile warranty and a new engine mount. The service manager said they had changed out a lot of these trannies and had encountered few problems after doing so.So fingers crossed that it lasts me a nice long time. They also changed out the ecu.Apparently this new one does a better job with the shifts.I wonder if others who have had multiple trannies got a replacement ecu.If not, maybe this could explain some of the problems with multiple replacements. In any case,I'm back on the road again.

Vik,

JMN Logistics, Im definitely boycotting them after how they half-assed things and put both you and I way behind schedule. But it seems like United Transport is ontop of things, they were calling me left and right yesterday trying to setup the Wednesday pickup.

So it's a definite good to go on Wednesday(Not sure if it's a.m or p.m yet). I'll make sure to include the new water pump and any other CL things I have laying around my garage.

Good luck on the tranny swap, and let me know if you ever have any questions about the car.

hey got a question you guys... BTW thanks for this post to everybody posting in here, espcially Pdiddy and NVA. U guys have giving some ligth at the end of this dark MF tunnel. My tranny started slipping a couple weeks ago, has done it 3 times, but drives good now, but i know its going, wont even try to fool myself. But i called a junk yard and they said that the EX and LX Odessey 05-06 tranny are the same, but different from the touring and EX-L. I want to make sure here before i buy. Please any input would be great.
