Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
Just finished playing a game of starcraft two and my computer was burning where the vents are. How bad is this for my computer? Is there anything I can do other than not playing starcraft.

So say one were to go out and purchase Win 7, 32 bit. What version would one actually recommend. (win 7 was about 10x faster on the laptop than XP is)
Question is should i get home premium, professional, or ultimate
Question is should i get home premium, professional, or ultimate
It's really between Home and professional. Home if it's for home and professional if you need to RDP into it or join a domain. get ultimate if you need branche cache, direct connect, and bitlocker for flash drives. If none of those words mean anything to you then get the home version

$149.99 Windows 7 Family Pack Reloaded Come October 2010

I have FiOS at home and I'm getting tired of paying $20/month for their DVR box. While it's much nicer than the box that came with brighthouse it's fuckin garbage compared to Windows Media Center and I can't stand the idea of spending that much a year for a product I don't get to keep.
So I recently picked up one of the new Xbox 360s and I had the idea of getting one of those Ceton Cable Card Tuners and adding it to my PC. It works with FiOS and I could stream live TV from my PC to my 360. It'd also allow me to record TV then edit out the commercials and save it to my WHS server. Yeah you see where going with this! Then I could stream it from my WHS to any other iDevice, Mac or PC in the house.

But now I just saw this was being shown on at IDF. It's built off of Windows 7 Embedded and is a set top box like device that run Windows 7 Media Center! It's pretty fargin sweet! I might just wait for one of these...
You have to see the cool keyboard/trackpad thing they came up with!

Currently it's early beta and they say it should be out 1H 2011.

Thread title change, thanks fatty!Ok so I downloaded Office 2010 Professional Plus x86 through the TechNet site and got my product keys from the site too. Then once it finished downloading I ran the install program but it's not accepting any of the product key that the technet site is giving me. WTF!
Yes, I've doubled checked to make sure the keys match the version of Office I'm trying to install.
has this ever happened to anyone else?
Pro-tip: Do not install Outlook without uninstalling Windows Live Mail first!
This becoming a pain in my ass. If you install Outlook with Windows Live Mail installed then Outlook will not register with Windows as the default email program and then the email features built into Word, Publisher (especially the send document as email (not an email with document attached) feature) will not work. If you uninstall Live mail after it will not fix it, nor will doing a repair install of office. It's not possible to set outlook as the default email program in the Windows default programs control panel.
Blah blah blah, when I figure it out I'll let you know! but I've completely uninstalled Office and was trying to reinstall it using the technet download and key but now it won't install, so I'm stuck.
FYI, I've had this Outlook live mail issue on every PC I've seen Outlook and live mail together on which so far is 3 PCs. Since live mail is pretty much included by default with new Windows 7 PCs it's an important thing to be aware of as you'll probably be dealing with this in the future.

im a little confused by that box you posted earlier.
never really used windows media center.
but so that box will act just like a cablebox/DVR and something like a roku box ?

I'm not sure if this is a Live mail specific issue or if other 3rd party browsers cause it as well. The issue is that Windows doesn't recognize Outlook as the default even after uninstalling live mail and it has nothing set as default. You can configure Outlook in it's preference as the default email but that doesn't do anything.
Also this click to run virtual tech is being annoying to. I tried to manually assign Outlook as the default email but I can't cause of the click to run technology. You know what this whole damn problem maybe caused by this click to run shit. I mean its cool and all but it puts the office files in a virtual machine separate from the rest of the system and it update automatically and you don't have to install patches and what not. But now I can't access the office programs. So I can't browse for the Outlook.exe application and manually assign it as the default mail program. Since it's in a virtual drive I can't access it. This is annoying me.

Yes it'll be a set top box that runs full Windows 7 Media center instead of the crap box that the cable company gives you with it's shitty features and UI. Since it runs Windows 7 it can do most things a PC can, no reason it couldn't run a web browser or the hulu app, it'll do netflix be able to stream from other PCs like any other PC can.
Open up Media Center and play around with it, it's really cool! It's hands down the best way to watch TV, it's just always been expensive requiring a full PC to do it. Now it looks like it can be done for maybe a couple hundred bucks. It'll be much like the old Apple TV device except you could actually watch and record Live TV on it and still do similar features of the old Apple TV. Well I'm not sure if it'll do TV, Movie rentals but I guess they could add that through the Zune marketplace service or Amazon rental service.
What's the absolute cheapest one can obtain a copy of Windows 7 64-bit for? and where?I basically need it to install it on my Mac and run a single program (solidworks). I don't plan to use it for anything else... Thanks.
No, the tuner and storage are built in to the set top box. Like I said it's just like that crap box you get from the cable company except it's got more features and a dramatically better UI.
Since it is a PC though I'd assume it could connect to another PC and store recorded TV there. If you had say a WHS you could set that up to store old shows in it's Recorded TV folder.

I take it there is no cheaper & legitimate alternative. Whether it be a stripped down version or not, I'm looking for a version that'll run solidworks and nothing more.
Check at our school you might find it for maybe $10 less. They used to offer Home premium as well but now it seems to be pro only.
I think this is the cheapest legal way for a student to obtain 7. It might be a few bucks cheaper at your school but it varies from school to school.

Ok I solved the issue with my product key not being accepted. IDK what it was but I just restarted the install program and it worked.
Reinstalling Office after uninstalling Live Mail fixed the issue, everything is gravy now

I found this other website...

I emailed someone at my school for the login info. I'm hoping this route isn't for an upgrade only too...
i personally went with this one.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-758-_-Product
i didnt want to really deal with a pirated version anymore and getting a iso online that didnt have malware added to it and activation crap, WGA etc etc.

Looks like being a student only qualifies me for an upgrade... I need the whole enchilada as I don't have Windows XP/Vista. My school pulled their student email service so I can't access my inbox, their old email addresses didn't end with .edu anyway. I went to the bookstore and they don't sell software

Oh yeah MSDNAA = the shit! I used to have that! I miss that shit like woah! you can download pretty much anything microsoft for free except office. I'm talking Windows, Server, Exchange, map point, sharepoint server, etc. For free! It's legit! What you're doing not so much but whatever. I've done it before too
but now that I signed up for Technet standard I get all the same benefits of MSDNAA and more for $199 for the first year then $149/yr after that. One thing better on technet than MSDNAA is get multiple downloads for the same product, MSDNAA is one per product. So if you download Windows 7 pro then your friend can't download it again or use the key that you used. He'd have to use a different version of 7 if the offered it which I'm sure they do.

On the off chance your purchase choices come down to this point, you may still not be out of luck. The licensing agreement we have with Microsoft at work (work = a college) explicitly stated that installing Windows 7 on a Mac qualified as an "upgrade" as long as the native OS remained on the machine. There are a few different academic licensing programs, however, so it's possible that the same terms may not apply for all of them.
The Windows 7 Family Pack is back! 3 copies of Windows 7 Home Premium for $149.

I have a request. Does anyone have an ISO of Office 2007 the Academic version? I have a client who has it installed and I have her key we just don't have the disc or install file for the academic version.
If someone could get that to me that'd be great.

It's not about redundancy with WHS it's about duplication, multiple copies of the same file on different drives. This has already been discussed a few times in the WHS thread and I posted a link in that thread about it.

I wonder what happens to your doc if you're online working on it and your interwebs goes down, I'm sure it saves itself automagically.
I'm gonna try and sign up for the beta if I can.
