Apple: iPhone News and Discussion Thread
It's interesting to note that none of the data-hogging apps, like video chats, netflix and even skype weren't able to use the 3G network. And just recently, poof. They were all updated and can ride the 3G pipe.
Isn't it interesting that those updates were very near to these data plan changes?
Why did ATT agree to unlimited for $30 on the iPad for just two months into its release?
methinks I'm going to hold onto my unlimited plan for awhile and see how things play out.
As for netflix, etc...I going to "assume" at least for myself, that most places I would such apps would be in a wifi environment anway (home, airplane, hotel room)

$14 a month for insurance... that's ridiculous. I bet I could go to State Farm and add it to my homeowners policy for less. Considering they'll probably charge $299 for the new iPhone, the insurance is basically saying "you'll be buying two phones."
I currently have unlimited Family Data usage for $10 a month. Wonder if that will be grandfathered in with the new iPhone or be forced to a new package.

You're fine with applecare for two years. I've only ever used it twice in 3 years. Once on my OG iphone when a part of the screen stopped being touch sensitive and today to just get a new phone, even though technically I didnt need to. My wife still uses the OG replacement phone which is now 2 years old.
If people are really scared...buy the phone with an AMEX card...you're covered.
no one is really going to own these phones past 2-3 years.
I quit the insurance thing for devices like this after I got rid of my Treo. I paid $5 a month for insurance. Doesn't seem like a lot. But I paid it for the 3 years that I owned it. Do the math, it's a considerably amount. And, I never ever used the insurance. 3 years pass, and I'm ready to get a new device. And, I'm out a $180 extra. Buy your device, the regular warranty (1 yr or whatever) will be plenty in case some freak thing goes wrong. Take good care of it, by the time you might start having problems with it, it'll be time to upgrade. It's not the best mentality but that's the culture we live in now. My 3GS is fine (aside from the no reception issue) but guess what, I'll get the new iphone anyway.
well that's good, I guess YMMV. But I still won't do insurance anymore, unless its a high dollar thing.

AT&T warns customer that emailing the CEO will result in a cease and desist letter
Posted Jun 2nd 2010 9:00PM by Nilay Patel
Sure, Steve Jobs might be a one-man email PR machine, but his pal Randall Stephenson at AT&T doesn't appear to be quite as gregarious -- as reader Giorgio Galante found out today, sending AT&T's CEO two emails in two weeks results in a phone call from AT&T Executive Response Team and a warning that further emails will result in a cease and desist letter. What did Giorgio's emails say? The first was a request to bump up his iPhone eligibility date and a request for a tethering option, and today's outlined his displeasure with AT&T's new data rates and ultimate decision to switch to Sprint and the EVO 4G. That prompted Brent to call Giorgio back and thank him for the feedback, but also politely warn him that further emails would be met with legal action. Ouch. As you'd expect, AT&T just lost itself a customer. We've followed up with Ma Bell to find out exactly why they went the lawyer route instead of oh, say, filtering Randall's email -- we'll let you know what they say.
P.S.- Amusingly, Giorgio says he emailed both Randall Stephenson and Steve Jobs last year about offering tethering and actually got a response from Steve -- maybe these two CEOs need to talk about more than data rates and service quality the next time they meet up.

Well at least we know where the crappy service practices hatch from.
BTW, fail @ Best Buy price matching. I hate that they call Wal Mart to see if they have them. I think BB is calling BS on WM actually having any iPhones. As if they get 2 a day or something.

Best Buy tries to wiggle out of price matching absolutely everything. That company can kick rocks.
And AT&T is a decent company...as long as you don't need actual help. However, I will say ever since I signed up for a corporate discount, the CS has been actually great. I'd definitely recommend it. I do think Randall (Did you sign your letter yet?) just asked to be spammed.

So fuck Best Buy. Apple matched so I got one and unlimited data. Sucks is that my contract renews on the 10th so I can't get unlimited. Looks like I'm locked to getting unlocked like a Nokia with my $10 Medianet plan.
For those of you that have Mywi or know about it, I have a couple questions.
First of all I have a 3g iphone with the 3.0 software, I havent checked if this is compatible yet, hope it is. BUt the real question is, I have edge network since I'm with t-mobile, will it still work? Or does it only work if you have 3g. Also is it even worth getting with the edge network or would it be incredibly slow?

I don't know about that MyWi app you're talking about since I don't have it, but I think you mean "Rock" app. It's meant to be an alternative to Cydia. One of its supposed benefits is that its faster and simpler but a lot of people mentioned its more unstable. I think it has some features that Cydia doesn't have and vice versa too

Sux that I'll be working during the announcement, guess I'll have to catch up during my break and lunch.

Omfg. So the night before a 6-hour road trip I hook up my iPhone to my computer so I can sync all the new songs. It syncs as soon as I hook it up (weird, since it doesn't usually do that and I didn't change anything) and so I press cancel during the back up process because I was going to add some more to the playlists. So once it's all said and done I notice some apps are missing. I later noticed that's it's all my
apps, a good 15 or so.
Trying to get them back but the
app is being a pain in the butt and I'm next to some hills so the 3G is slow as fawk and wifi isn't faster either

The process I posted earlier in the thread guarantees your cracked apps stay on your phone after a sync.
heres what i do in itunes to make a ringtone.
first things first make sure you have your import settings as AAC not mp3.
goto "edit" > "preferences" > general tab > import settings > import using AAC encoder > ok > ok
ok now on any song, right click on the track in itunes, and then goto "get info"
goto "options"
and then where it says "start time" and "stop time" put in the values of where in the track you want the ring tone to be, iirc it can be only 30 seconds max. also make sure the check boxes are checked.
ex. if you want the first 30 seconds of a song put in 0:00 as the start time and 0:30.00 as the end time.
if you want it to start from 1 minute 37 seconds into the song put in 1:37 as the start time and 2:07 as the end time, it also doesnt have to be exactly 30 seconds it can be shorter, but not longer.
click "ok"
then right click on the same track and goto "create AAC version"
it will then make a copy of the song and it will show up in the library as a 30 second track.
then right click on the newly created file and then goto "show in windows explorer"
it will then open up where the file is located.
go back to itunes and then remove the 30 second track from the library "right click" > "delete" > remove > keep file
go back to windows explorer and then on the file change the file extension from "m4a" to "m4r"
ignore the warning where it says the file may become unusuable by clicking "yes"
then double click on it, and bam, it shows up in the ringtones area where you can now drag and drop it into your iphone.
ohh yea dont forget to go back to the original song in your music library and uncheck "start time" and "stop time" otherwise you will only hear that section you cut out for the ring tone.
that wasnt so hard now was it?

I got Xilisoft iPhone Ringtone Maker off demonoid since it has a registration code. All you do is load the mp3 off of it, pick the times start/stop, pick where to export, and convert. Straight into iTunes into ringtones. Sweet program.
