For some reason they have set the iPhone X to report a lower signal strength for a given dBm.

I cannot imagine why that would be.

But in a given place and time, at the same dBm, the iPhone X will report fewer bars of signal than the LG V30.

In this same situation, both devices can make crystal clear voice calls.

However.... In this same situation, the LG V30 gets about ⅓ faster data speeds than the iPhone X.

This seems to be true across my travel area and in all sorts of situations...1.33X to 1.50X faster data speeds with the LG V30.

This 4XMIMO thing is apparently not just a selling point.

If data speeds were the most important thing to me, the LG V30 would be the device that I used the most.

If you can deal with a pure black lock screen and pure black wallpaper, having so many pixels turned off could very well give you two days of use.

So has everyones required a signature for delivery or only if it says on the tracking information? Mine is not showing that it is required. Just trying to figure out if I need to be home tomorrow.

Even Apple warns against burn in on the X. Says it’s an inherent trait to OLED. Hence it comes with stock settings for a short active times before putting the screen to sleep.

In some Apple documents, Mr Ive cautions against holding an image on an active iPhone X screen for longer than 20 minutes.

This is probably overly cautious, but it is still a good idea to change your habits if you are someone who does things like keeping a full size clock loaded at night, or something like that.

The burn-in issue is one of the many reasons why Apple stuck with LCD for so very long. The burn in issue is much better now than it used to be.

Yet even now, they're working on an "Active LCD" screen for a cheaper version of the iPhone in 2018.

Anticipating that users would want to do this to extend battery life, the iPhone X comes with a "pure solid black" wallpaper in the options.

Is the burn in also an issue on the regular Pixel2 or just the XL?

Just the 2 XL. The 2 XL screen is manufactured by LG Display and has been riddled with problems. By contrast the 2 screen is manufactured by Samsung Display (sister company of Samsung Mobile) and doesn't have any issues. iPhone X and the Pixel 2 have the same screen manufacturers and have a similar collection of minor issues.

Does Samsung still reserve the latest and greatest screen tech for their own devices? Or will the S9 have essentially the same screen as the iPhone X?

So, technically, Samsung display is a separate company from Samsung Mobile, but they're all under the same umbrella. iPhone X's screen was built to Apple's specification by Samsung display. The S9 will have a Samsung Display designed by Samsung mobile. I would expect the Samsung one to be significantly more vibrant but less real looking. Either way, they're very different.

I do notice that I'm on AT&T Wi-Fi more often on the X. My house is very near a cell tower and I usually have 4-5 bars on my 6. With the X I'm on Wi-Fi calling, that could mean it's signal is weak enough that it's switching to Wi-Fi instead or maybe there's a change we don't know about where it favors Wi-Fi calling in more situations than it did before. Apple removed the actually dbm signal strength numbers from the field test menu so it's harder to tell. Which that seems suspicious to me....

Is there a way to completely shut off wifi?

If I turn off the control center toggle, it sometimes turns back on by itself? I mainly get annoyed with the available wifi networks pop-up.

if you do it in control center, no, it doesn't actually turn it off.

Use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in Control Center with iOS 11

Learn how to control Wi-Fi and Bluetooth from Control Center on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with iOS 11 and later.

About Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

In iOS 11 and later, when you toggle the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth buttons in Control Center, your device will immediately disconnect from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth accessories. Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will continue to be available, so you can use these important features:
  • AirDrop
  • AirPlay
  • Apple Pencil
  • Apple Watch
  • Continuity features, like Handoff and Instant Hotspot
  • Instant Hotspot
  • Location Services
Disconnect from Wi-Fi networks

Open Control Center and tap . The icon will dim and your device will disconnect from any network that you're connected to.

While Wi-Fi is disabled, auto-join for any nearby Wi-Fi networks will also be disabled until:
  • You turn on Wi-Fi in Control Center.
  • You connect to a Wi-Fi network in Settings > Wi-Fi.
  • You walk or drive to a new location.
  • It's 5 AM local time.
  • You restart your device.
Disconnect from Bluetooth accessories

Open Control Center and tap . The icon will dim and your device will disconnect from any accessory it's connected to, except for Apple Watch, Instant Hotspot, Apple Pencil, and Continuity features, like Handoff.

If Bluetooth is turned off, you won’t be able to connect your iOS device to your Bluetooth accessories until:
  • You turn on Bluetooth in Control Center.
  • You connect to a Bluetooth accessory in Settings > Bluetooth.
  • It's 5 AM local time.
  • You restart your device.

Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

If you want to completely disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for all networks and devices, follow these steps:
  • To turn off Wi-Fi, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn off Wi-Fi.
    • To turn off Bluetooth, go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn off Bluetooth.
For the best experience on your iOS device, try to keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.

I think that Apple's relationship with Japan Display is deepening.

It also looks like they've got an Intel chip in line for 2018, with gigabit LTE and 5G potential, and they might not use Qualcomm at all.

Go in to Settings -> Wi-Fi and turn off Ask to Join Networks.

I did that like 8-9 years ago, shit is annoying.

Question to everyone who got the 8 or X (I'm long due for upgrading from my 6s).

Is the X worth the extra $$?

Probably, for a lot of us.

As a device to use when you must get something done...yes. Yes several times over.

You will find an Android device that can do something or another better, however.

In my case, my V30 has cellular data that is demonstrably faster than the iPhone X's cellular data, just as an example.

Because the iPhone X is insurmountable in its benchmark scores and calculating ability, reviewers are coming up with these weird tests where they load a bunch of games and applications, and then reload them to see how fast devices can do it.

I don't know anybody who uses his smartphone like that, but whatever.

LOL....

Loading a bunch of crap into an 8 gb RAM Android and expecting a 3 gb iPhone to be able to do the same thing is something I do not understand...but that's what they're doing these days to try to make the other devices maybe stand a chance against the iPhone.

As a single device that does everything well, even if it's not the best at something or another, yes, the iPhone X is worth the money for people who have to do things. :-)

I think the iPhone X is possibly the most close to perfect physical embodiment of technology I have ever held in my own hands. I was skeptical on the size (I like the Plus size a lot), but after 5 days of use, this device is essentially the perfect physical form. The material quality, fit and finish are really, really great too.
I guess you could say I'm pretty happy with the purchase.
