And then to add a new Face ID, it just needs my passcode.
I swear it was different before but I could be mistaken
edit: most of my banking apps apps asked me to reenter my password. One of them didnt
edit2: ohh man yea it was using Face ID to input my password from Keychain.

I don't get why changing something related to Apple ID doesn't ask for the Apple ID password rather than the passcode / Face ID of the phone. Or why not ask for both? how often would people need to access that stuff to be an inconvenience?

finally getting nailed for stealing a patent
https://www.theverge.com/24009254/ap...patent-dispute
A patent infringement case is causing Apple to abruptly stop selling its two most recent Apple Watch models, the Series 9 and Ultra 2. Its website froze sales as of December 21st, and they disappeared from physical Apple Store shelves before the ban officially went into effect on December 26th. Apple now says it’s appealing the ruling.
The move came in response to an import ban handed down by the US International Trade Commission, which ruled in October that Apple infringed on patents for pulse oximetry tech made by Masimo, a medical device maker.
This means Apple can no longer import and sell its newest Apple Watch models in the US — at least for the time being. The company is already trying to come up with a solution to avoid the ban, but it might take a while until the dispute is completely resolved.

Shame, I love my Ultra 2.
They'll get it back on the market sooner rather than later.

Staying informed about the latest developments in the Apple ecosystem is crucial, isn't it? I've found Macgasm blog, to be my current favorite source for Apple-related news. It consistently provides insightful updates on iPhone news and various other topics within the Apple world. However, I'm always eager to explore more channels to ensure a comprehensive understanding. Do you have any other recommendations for reliable sources? I'm interested in expanding my resources to stay well-informed about all things

Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 sales ban to resume January 18
Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 sales will be halted again in the U.S. starting at 5 PM tomorrow, January 18, due to the rejection of a bid by Apple to have the sales ban paused throughout its appeal of an ITC decision that found its blood oxygen feature infringe on patents by medical tech company Masimo. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit denied the request formally earlier today (via 9to5Mac), based on a number of factors under consideration like whether or not Apple had a good chance of succeeding in its appeal (though the court also went out of its way to note that this denial doesn’t reflect on the merits of the appeal overall).
Meanwhile, Apple has another route available to avoid a halt: U.S. Customs said earlier in the week that it would consider a software update that disabled Apple Watch blood oxygen sensing features to put the devices beyond the scope of the ITC ban, which means the company could effectively keep selling them if it pushes a firmware update to turn off all the pulse oximetry stuff.
Apple’s appeal will still continue, however, and this doesn’t mean they won’t eventually win that, which would allow for a resumption of sale with the blood oxygen features included. It’ll be interesting to see what happens tomorrow when that 5 PM ET deadline hits.
For those keeping track, this means the current Apple Watch models have now been removed from sale, resumed sales, and are pending another sales stoppage, all in under a month.

I shattered the back glass of my iPhone 15 Pro, so I just ordered a replacement part from their self service repair website for $160. It's supposed to be much easier to replace the back glass on the 15 Pro compared to previous models

They don't even offer the back glass for previous models on their self repair website. but the instructions they provide look intense. I'll probably follow the iFixit guide instead

what would it have cost if you asked Apple to do it?

I don't care that much about sideloading apps but alternative browser engines should've been a thing a long time ago

I wish you could configure different apps to work with faceID or passcode depending on how important they are. Banking app = passcode, facebook login = faceID

Don't care about side loading apps but would be great to default to Google Maps...

anyways kind of more moot now that 17.3 is out with the Stolen Device Protection being available. Should be on by default IMO

Yes, but the problem was with if someone had your passcode, they could easily delete your faceID and then set up a new one. With the new faceID set up, they had full access to everything including keychain if you used it.

- Face ID or Touch ID biometric authentication: Some actions such as accessing stored passwords and credit cards require a single biometric authentication with Face ID or Touch ID — with no passcode alternative or fallback — so that only you can access these features.

I just realized after taking the old back glass off that the adhesive isn't included with the back glass, it's a separate part you need to order, that I didn't order. So now I've taken it apart but I can't put it back together.
So I have to try and find adhesive locally asap. An obscure part for a relatively new phone that on average people haven't broken as many of yet. Finding repair parts for brand new devices is always hard early on.
iFixit only sells the iphone 14 pro adhesive, they list no parts for the 15 line, is it compaitible IDK? Apple only lists adhesive for the 15 pro line not the 14 pro line so I can't compare part numbers there. Also Apple sells a kit for the iPhone 14 that includes adhesive, back glass, and screws but not for the 15 Pro. Also my kit was supposed to come with screws, they weren't in the box. Apple also took a week to ship the back glass and then it took a week to arrive.
Hopefully the local Apple store will sell me the $.90 part, LOL LMAO
I expect them to say no but I've got to ask. Maybe a local repair shop has one but IDK if they'll sell me just that.
I did this repair because glass that protects the camera shattered so the camera was getting exposed to dust, and now with the rear glass removed all of the cameras are exposed now, and I have no case.

Ok the band-aid is to just put the new back glass on and it's held in place by the metal clips and the 2 pentalobe screws at the bottom by the usb-c port actually screw into clips on the back glass so everything is covered now. It's just not waterproof, which that really depends on how well I reapply the adhesive anyways. I spent an hour or more thoroughly cleaning off the old adhesive.
I'm calling it a night, and I'll probably order the adhesive from Apple and wait 6 weeks for it to arrive.

The adhesive arrived much faster than the back glass so I was able to install it last weekend. It was pretty easy, I was able to use the original box the iphone came and about 10 pounds of weight it to help evenly apply pressure to the adhesive so it sealed well overnight. It turned out pretty damn good.

Apple says the batteries in all iPhone 15 degrade much slower than previously reported. iPhone batteries are usually rated for 80% capacity after 500 cycles, Apple says the 15s can be charged for 1000 cycles before reaching 80% capacity. Probably longer when you limit charging to 80%.
Apple says they're going to retest older models and update them if necessary

Honestly 80% has been plenty for me. I wish the they had an option to go lower than 80%, I'd probably be fine with 70%

My fav announcements are RCS, the ability to access and control your iphone from your mac, satellite iMessage, topography maps, Windows 7 Aero Snap comes to macOS, and AI Siri looks nice.
Seems like the AI features are only for 15 Pro and newer, even the 15 doesn't get it. I'm curious what AI features if any will be exclusive to the 16/16 Pro.
Those AI generated images look horrible though

This new network section in Control Center is nice
Continuity copy paste is such a sick feature, I copied this screenshot on my iphone and then pasted it directly into the AZ Image uploader screen on Edge running on macOS and it pasted in as a .png.
And now to be able to control my iPhone from my mac, that's gonna be handy especially for 2fa codes

I’ve always hated how wide the beam was for the iPhone flashlight.
nice to see there’s an option to change it. Wonder if it has any effect on output and distance.

Yea it’s the same for me but I’m still on iOS 17.
my actual calls go back to Jan 2023.
FaceTime calls go back to 2020.
i just wish there was an option to not integrate VOIP calls in to my call history.
for work we no longer have physical phone. It’s all done thru WebEx. I just hate that my work calls get clumped in to my personal call history.
