I can see it being useful for convenience. More convenient than having to deal with a cord all the time, especially with how fragile Apple cables are. I've never owned a USB-C device but I don't imagine the cables are any more fragile or durable than regular micro-USB.
Especially for somebody that has to get in and out of their vehicle a lot, and doesn't necessarily need the super-fast charging

The iPhone X screen is incredible and FaceID works great, but your reasoning for buying an 8 is good. 8 does not have a headphone jack, but it comes with a lightning to headphone adapter.
The best deal, IMHO, is probably to save $100ish and get the 8 Plus. That's a great device.

I think that what got a lot of us into the X is that it has a bigger work space in a smaller size than the 8 Plus.
Once you've dealt with the better is smaller size of it, and how instantly and very well Face ID works, we are just stuck with the X.
There's no denying the 8 Plus works every bit as well. If you're comfortable with the IPS screen (which has a lot going for it), Touch ID and the bigger size, then you can't really be criticized.
Yes, it includes the Lighting - 3.5 mm adapter.
If you have a 7 Plus now, you might be surprised that the 8 Plus is noticeably heavier.
I wouldn't even consider an 8 Plus. That is too big for me, I like the smaller size of the regular 8. So really it is between the 8 and X. I'm not an iPhone fanboy like lots of peeps on here and I don't really care about the face recognition (I don't even use a pass code on my current phone) so, although the X looks better, I think the 8 is all I need.
Basically my 6s is just getting noticeably slower and want something better performance-wise.

You know what? I don't think the iPhone X is going to change at all except for a switch to the LG OLED so that they can abandon Samsung before the end of 2018.
A bigger version with OLED 6.5, sure, and an active IPS version with 6.1, sure. But this might be a case you'll hang onto your iPhone X for two years.
From the hardware specifications, I believe that improvements to wireless charging are going to be made outside the iPhone, not inside it.
By the way: I seem to be getting fast charge with two Seneo wireless attached to 12 watt iPad chargers.
And as far as wired charging goes, I'm not sure that the 29 watt chargers that I have are very much faster than the 12 watt iPad chargers. They are faster. But not by much at all.
If you already have 12 watt iPad chargers, I'd think about just sticking with those.
You'd also be able to avoid having to pay for the USB-C to Lightning cable if you stuck with the USB-A to Lightning cables that you already have, used in conjunction with the iPad chargers.

I usually go 2 years but my son needed a phone last year so I gave him my perfect 6+ and got a 7+. The 7+ is perfect so I'm waiting for whatever comes next September.

I completely agree. Much like the Watch found it's 'perfect' form factor albeit surprisingly in the first generation I think the iPhone iterating is essentially done. This form factor is perfect, the materials are incredible and Apple's future focus is on glasses, not phones.
Notch doesn't bother me, but also it can be removed and the physical design of the device will not change.
Where a developer adapts his application to use the two ears, it looks pretty good. More and more applications are being changed to roll into the area that shows signal strength and time.
I can't imagine the notch disappearing.
I'd assume it rolls out to the two new iPhones as well, and then shows up on the new iPad.
Well, I lied. I gave in and upgraded from my 6s to the 8. After 2 years my 6s was getting damn slow doing anything on it and the battery life was .
I played around with the X as well as the 8 but in the end felt like the ONLY thing I liked better about the X was the screen taking up the whole phone... didn't care about anything else. So for that reason, I'm out on the X and in on the 8.
Had it for a day and MUCH faster and the battery life is night and day. Going for a run with GPS tracking and stuff would drain at least 20% of my full battery on my 6s and it only drained 1% on the 8. Plus I LOVE the wireless charging.. so much easier when going to bed instead of having to find that damn cord that the dog might have unplugged.
Anybody have the AIRPODS? I was looking into those and have read great reviews about them. I'd use them for running... so they would get very sweaty. I know with a lot of earbuds they come out or the sound gets muffled or they might fall out when running... anybody have experience with them?
I have airpods and I really like them. Got them as a gift, so it's hard for me to answer "are they worth it?"
One thing is indisputable, there are incredible easy to pair. Also the usability is very nice. No need to turn them on or off, just take them out of the case and put them in your ear, it'll connect automatically. Pauses when you the one too.
Battery life with the case is amazing.
I don't give a shit what people think about how they look. I do get some glances, but it doesn't bother me.
The fit is good. I usually have a problem with earbuds, especially those without foam tips. But somehow Apple finally designed something that fits very nicely.
The sound is just above average for music. It is lacking bass and mids. That's what gives me pause, especially for the price. For phone calls though, the quality is great.
Sorry forgot you asked about exercise and sweat. I sweat like crazy during runs but they have always felt locked in. I haven't tried sprinting or doing suicides with them.

I thought it was posted here already but it seems to have been discovered that as your battery gets weaker Apple throttles CPU performance so that it doesn't overdraw power from the battery causing it to shut off. That was the "software fix" they came up with in iOS 10 that fixed the issue users were having where their iPhone would just randomly shut down when the battery got low. If you put in a new battery then the performance goes back to normal. People have done geekbench tests before and after replacing the battery and the performance doubles.
I was very interested in this when I first heard about it, but I could not avoid thinking that Apple should really warn people when that is happening. Something integral to iOS warning you that your battery is suspect and you're being throttled.

It's an interesting point. It makes sense that the phone manages its performance to preserve battery. Apple has always favored battery consumption above almost everything else.
There should be an alert to let people know of degraded battery. Then give users the option in settings to choose between longer battery life and lower/throttled performance vs shorter battery life and normal performance.
Who knows how many people unknowingly bought a new iPhone because they thought their phone was just old and needed replacement and instead could have fixed the throttling issue simply by replacing the battery for $79 through Apple.
It's not just about battery life. Its about keeping the lithium ion batteries above the critical voltage threshold of around 3.0V.
Afaik when lithium batteries drop below that threshold they become chemically imbalanced and the batteries could short circuit and possibly catch fire like the Note 7.
