Other unmentioned features on iOS 8.

Along with the features that were demoed on stage, an iOS 8 graphic displayed some additional functions that went largely under the radar, many of which look quite interesting. For example, iOS 8 will apparently display battery usage by app, a handy feature that will let users monitor the battery drain of specific apps, shutting down those that are drawing too much power.

iPads will gain the ability to take Panoramic photos like the iPhone, while the Camera will gain an instant burst mode, a timer mode, and separate controls for focus and exposure. iBooks will support an auto night mode and the ability to organize books by series, while notifications will include travel time.

A mysterious Tips app, which was first depicted in an early screenshot of iOS 8, is also mentioned, though it is unclear what this app will do. It is possible Tips will provide iOS users with information on lesser known iOS features, serving as a tutorial app for those who want to learn the ins and outs of their devices.

An "In Case of Emergency" card will be added to iOS 8, displaying contact information and possibly health-related information as well. Users will be able to use Siri to purchase iTunes content, Notes gains a new rich text editing feature, and RSS feeds are displayed within Shared Links in Safari.

Other mentioned features offering unknown functions include Place cards in other apps and Speak Screen.

Finally, there are also several accessibility improvements coming, including an Alex voice, Braille keyboard, improved zoom, and multi-device support for MFi hearing aids. Guided Access, which limits an iPad or iPhone to opening a single app, will gain time limits, a countdown timer, and Touch ID integration.

These are of course, only a small selection of the hundreds of new features and minor functions that will likely be added to iOS 8 as it is in development. iOS 8 is available to developers immediately, while the public will get access to the new mobile operating system later this year.

yeah I got the first day it came out as well but didnt get the launch day bag...I think in the box I still have the number tags they distributed outside the store....

My only concern is the li-ion battery swelling or doing other funky things from sitting over time. We'll see. It's been sitting since 2008 and still works fine so hopefully it can survive another 20 or so.

With how many of those things that were out there, I doubt they will be worth much 20, 40 or even 50 years from now.

I love the idea of being able to reply to texts without changing apps.

On a side note did they finally fix the damn shift key? I guess now at least they give us the option to get another keyboard.

Same here, although they totally used the same idea I thought up when iOS 7 first came out. Should've patented it

common reply...

so when you guys say text without changing apps, when you receive a text, you get a pop up and you can reply using that pop up and the pop up disappears and you are still in the (say) game...right?

ok cool....dont want to bring out the whole Android thing but it truly is a great great feature....I have been using it and I seem to use it a lot....

Its like a quick reply box that shows up and you can mess with the size of the box to show only a line of text of the full thing/etc

Installed beta 1 on my phone. Not surprisingly, bugs galore. Isn't playing nice with MyFordTouch so I might revert...cool additions though.

Its built into the factory rom/texting (atleast on the note and note3) that I had.

Was also built into the SMS app on the KNOX custom rom (for note3)

for separate apps, look up Textra/GO SMS/Handcent SMS/Smart SMS (the best looking one IMO)

The stock messaging app as of 4.3 makes you go back to the messaging app to respond to texts. However with the 3rd party apps mentioned (I use/love Textra) can you respond to texts without leaving the app you were in. There's also an app called Quick Reply I think that allows this same behavior while using the stock messaging app (stock messaging app is crap IMO). However using Quick REply doesn't clear out the outstanding text notification so there's still the task of going into your messages app to clear the read/unread messages. Textra is like biteSMS on a jb iPhone which I had prior to switching.

No Sir, I am dead sure for original Note, because I had it for about 6 months before rooting it...it was my first Android device and I was scared....

with the note 3, I rooted/ran custom rom the first day itself since I didnt want to deal with all the bloatware on the phone...

but yes, STOCK Android (i think 4.1) running on Note supported quick text/reply on them....

its gonna be quite amazing if developers are able to release camera apps with full manual control, I think that's what they said is gonna be possible.

Strange. And I have a Note 2. We were discussing in the Android forum the other day. Was it a feature you had to turn on? Messaging app is too sluggish anyways though for me to use it. Textra is like buttah.

agreed on both counts...

yes, you have to go into the message settings and turn it on...

yes, on TEXTRA being the shit...

the whole reason I dumped the stock messaging app was when either google/samsung/att (not sure who) took the group messaging feature out...

for the life of me, it wouldnt work for me...so I switched to Textra

They do, how it's done.

I just don't want to bother with that using my cell phone camera.

Especially with all the dust and cracked/spots on the sensor in my iPhone.

http://www.swiftkey.net/en/blog/swif...ming-to-ios-8/

Hi everyone,

As you may have heard, Apple announced this morning at WWDC that with the launch of iOS 8, they are supporting the use of third-party keyboards. Big news! We wanted to make sure to let you all know what our thoughts are, directly from Ben Medlock and Jon Reynolds, SwiftKey’s co-founders:

“We’re delighted Apple has decided to embrace the importance of opening its platform to third party keyboards. For more than four years, SwiftKey and our millions of users have pioneered faster, easier typing on touchscreens, leading the industry with next-word prediction and smarter autocorrection. Our technology features on more than 200 million devices to date and we can’t wait to reach more. We first brought a taste of our technology to iOS in January this year with the launch of the free note-taking app SwiftKey Note. Are we going to build SwiftKey Keyboard for iOS 8? Of course we are. We’ve already started.”

I don't forsee this happening for a few years yet, but I don't really mind if it means better audio quality/slimmer form factor.
