Let me get this straight: Flash is being used by millions of web sites. Now that Hulu might change to something iPad compatible, all is well?? Do you realize how silly this would sound if we weren't already used to Apple's closed ecosystem?
Associated Press: The Apple keynote unveils iTV amid much hoopla! It's a gorgeous 60" 1080p OLED screen that is so fast and slick you'll be drooling! You should see the menu transitions, and.... wait for it... it's a touch screen! One more thing: it doesn't support the NTSC broadcast standard. If you want to watch your favorite shows, each network has to make an app widget. Good news though! NBC already has native iTV support, so you won't miss the Olympics. You can watch other shows by downloading them from the iTunes widget, but you have to pay for them one by one.
(iTV = iPad, NBC = Youtube, ESPN = Hulu, and NTSC = Flash.)
On Acurazine:
Sarlaac: I can't wait!
Mockenrue: Why would consumers buy this? It's hard to believe that people would be willing to pay for every sporting event they watch when they can watch ESPN for free on their Samsung.
Sarlaac: I read that ESPN is going to charge for sporting events anyway.
Mockenrue: That's not the point. ESPN is just one example. Do people really want to pay for every show or wait for an app from the networks?
Sarlaac: Apple has always done it that way.
One week later...
Sarlaac: [posts announcement that ESPN is in discussions with Apple to show their content on the iTV] Eff the haters!!!

I posted the hulu report because one of things people were whining about was not being able to use a site such as hulu. And boom, here is hulu making their site or an app compatible for use.
Whether hulu will charge and how much has nothing to do with its being brought to the ipad. As jupie mentioned earlier hulu has been looking at a subscription service for awhile now.
Its a cute hypothetical conversation you posted but way off base.

Hulu was just given as an example, and one that wouldn't affect me at all. The only time I use Hulu is to stream it via DLNA to my TV so I wouldn't care. I also don't care about the 3G plan, because a tablet would be a Family Room table wifi thing for me. Even the price doesn't bother me, as I've been known to pay too much to be an early adopter ($1,000 for the first HD DirecTivo that was $200 in a matter of months - ouch!).
In all honesty, after thinking about it for a week or two, my biggest hangups are the typing experience and flash. Most people that have used it are saying that typing is worse than the iPhone with thumbs. Yes, you can get a keyboard, but at that point I might as well pull out my 13" laptop. So anything with a lot of typing is out. As far as browsing, I couldn't use many of the sites that I visit every day because of flash: Google finance, CNET TV, WordPress, ESPN highlights, etc. What's left are things like tracking scores, looking up info on IMDB, or using Wikipedia - all of which can be done on a phone.

What's more practical?
Every website has to change or modify in some way what they are doing in order to run on the iPad.
or
Really the one major company that's a holdout to the technology reverses course.
Just saying.

But this is one way to force content providers to drop flash, and I'm sure its a tactic Job's gambling on. Wouldnt be the first time he's made a move like that...and its worked before.
And in the interim....my only guess, like hulu......"there's an app for that" will apply to many of these content providers in managing to still be usable on the pad/phone.
The only news I really want to hear that would really sell me on the device is Netflix. I really hope netflix is trying to develop an app to allow for their instant play feature. That is a huge plus of owning something such as the pad.

I wish that were true... Flash is not ideal, and Adobe can DIAF with all their acrobat updater spam, but it's here to stay for a long time.
TCP/IP, Javascript, and CGI are also woefully outdated technologies that we all thought would be gone by now, but every browser has to support them. There's too much of a legacy user base out there.

I don't really see netflix going to the ipad only cause of iTunes and their purchases/rental stuff.
Plus they are saying that when the ipad launches the prices for TV shows will be 99cents.
Also you probably wouldve already seen an app for hulu/netflix for iPhone already.

A company such as hulu might not have felt it was worth making an app for a 3" screen. But they certainly feel its worth making an app for a 9.7" screen.

not true. a lot of people dont view an iphone as a media device. Enter the ipad with a much larger screen and youve just gained the interest and attention of whole new group.

I'd be surprised if there isn't a Netflix app at some point. They're trying to get on every device possible... Check you toaster - chances are it can stream Netflix.

I also don't see people watching movies on portable DVD players, which are about Ipad viewing size. New competitors for Ipad viewing media devices are out and they don't sell that much either. Its a nitch.
If you aren't using the Iphone for music or video, then why have it?

Put flash on and more streaming video on it and its a winner....
On a side note - I watch a lot of movies on my Iphone (currently watching Sherlock Holmes) while on the elliptical. I think the Ipad would be too big to hold (like I do with the Iphone), but it it mounted on the exercise machine, it would be awesome.

People, me included don't want to pay for TV / Movies on Itunes...I pretty much solely only watch movies on my Iphone...

I also use for a lot of web browsing when out and about. email. An occasional puzzle game. bank account apps. taking quick photos and videos. Showing my photography.
Occasionally sharing funny vids on set with youtube...and I do have some movies on it...but I dont really watch movies on the go. At the gym Id rather listen to music and on an airplane, once in a while I'll watch a movie but I'd rather sleep or read.

All I'm sayin' is, I don't see a downside from a consumer standpoint to have Flash on the iPhone as well as any other formats they have.
#1274
Apple sees a downside to it, most of the problems that Apple has with their OS is because of flash. I think it was on ARS website about this, but I'm not trying to find it.

All a lot of that translates to quicker drain your battery. And, yes, sadly the technology and cost of batteries required to REALLY run any of this still isnt there. Otherwise I bet the money the ipad would be less than a .5 inch thick and way less than 1.5lbs.
