My Dell U2711 arrives tomorrow! And I got the whole day off to play with it!!!

It's supposedly got a 80,000:1 contrast ratio! that's like OLED levels! my current screen is like 600:1 or 1000:1 at best. I'll definitely report back!

ehh.. i wouldnt trust that number for the contrast ratio, they're just inflated numbers that dont mean much and has no standard measurement.

Apparently apple made a quick change. The mute switch will now lock the screen orientation. So it doesn't rotate when you don't want it to.

Thank you for reserving your iPad for pickup at the Apple Retail Store. You’ll receive a confirmation email shortly, and we’ll have your iPad ready and waiting for you when you come in to pick it up and pay between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on April 3.

Anyone in favor of renaming this thread iSarlacc...?

Well, I'm seriously eagerly awaiting initial reviews. Wouldn't mind trying one at a Best Buy once it launches either...

Early iPad Reviews Appear

Wednesday March 31, 2010 09:47 PM EST
Written by arn
The early iPad reviews are in from those seeded with pre-release units from Apple. The general conclusion seems to be very positive but with the well known limitations (no Flash, no USB, etc...). Apps are to be a big differentiator for the iPad and an early list of iPad apps are available on AppShopper.

David Pogue / New York Times

Pogue attacks the iPad from two different perspectives: techie and "everyone else". If you're a techie, Pogue says that a laptop will do more for less money. But, if you like the concept of the iPad, "you'll love the machine". Pogue did test the iPad's battery life and found it could play movies continuously for over 12 hours.

Walt Mossberg / All Things D

- "a whole new type of computer"
- Mossberg found the iPad a "pleasure to use" and had less and less interest in using his laptop the longer he used it, reserving their use for writing/editing longer documents or watching Flash-requiring web videos.
- Impressed by the battery life which was longer than Apple's 10 hour claim.
- No trouble with the on screen keyboard.
- Pages is a "serious" content creation app but only exports to Word and not always accurately.

Edward Baig / USA Today

- "The first iPad is a winner."
- Onscreen keyboard fine for emails or quick notes, but not for lengthy articles.
- Most will use the iPad for consuming content rather than creating it.
- "Apple has pretty much nailed it with this first iPad, though there's certainly room for improvement."
.

Walt Mossberg, Edward Baig, and David Pogue aren't exactly the most objective reviewers. These three are handpicked by Apple for a reason for their early exclusives. Pogue writes Apple books, for goodness sake!

I'm sure the other reviews will be generally positive too, but the conflict of interest with those three is absurd.

Thursday April 01, 2010 08:40 PM EST
Written by arn

Due to the timing of the news on April 1st, there had been some doubts about the truthfulness of the announcement that Netflix would be offering a free iPad app that allowed streaming movies to the iPad.

The app is now live in the App Store and can be accessed directly via this link (iTunes). The app is free and the description is as follows:

Get Netflix on your iPad. Just download this free app and you can instantly watch TV shows & movies streaming from Netflix.
- Watch as often as you want
- It’s part of your Netflix unlimited membership
- Resume watching where you left off on your TV or computer
- Browse movies and manage your Queue right from your iPad
Not a Netflix member? Start your FREE trial today.
No word on if iPhone and iPod Touch compatibility is forthcoming

very little goodies in the box.
but i guess the exclusion of earbuds makes sense, i guess not many people would use it just as a portable music/movie player

I got the 64GB non 3G. The reason is that I believe in a few months there will be enough phones out there to serve as a 3G hotspot in addition to the other smartphone capabilities. (I'm due for a new phone in July HTC EVO 4G ). I'll seldom use the iPad outside my house, most hotels have free wifi, and the rest should be covered by my phone.

well the wifi model doesnt have a-gps thou

but yea, i think for most the just wifi should be enough.

for me i would get the 3G model, since its optional to get the data plan or not. if i feel like i need then, then i could just add it.

True but not a biggy for me since my car and my current phone have active GPS.

What bothers me the most ( I found out today and get the unit tomorrow) is that Safarri doesn't have tabbed websites. I love my tabbing.

At any rate, the movies will be great on giving the kid in the backseat on a long trip.

ok it does, its not a traditional tabbed browsing like in IE and firefox.

Let your fingers do the surfing.

With iPad, navigating the web has never been easier or more intuitive, because you use the most natural pointing device there is: your finger. Scroll through a page just by flicking up or down on the screen. Double-tap a section on a page to enlarge or shrink it. Or pinch to zoom in or out. When you touch and hold a link, Safari shows you the URL so you know before you go. There’s also a handy thumbnail view that shows all your open pages in a grid, so you can quickly move from one page to the next.

might get one of these for my pops. he loves his iphone and is always surfing on it in front of the tv. I really wish there was a way to just add it to my current phone data plan though.
