Apple: Hardware News and Discussion Thread
Apple.com shows they're still selling the MacBook Air but it looks like without any updates. Good news for students. Wonder if they'll update them later on.... maybe with iMac and Mac mini updates?

Its neat. But its not make me run out and buy one amazing.
The touch bar is cool, but I have my reservations about it. It does a lot of swipe to adjust functionality in it that I have been wishing for for years.
The swapping to thunderbolt 3/usb C ports all around is the biggest offender. I get why, but that would require people to buy in to more adapters or hubs. And for a pro machine, that's a big offense.
Losing Magsafe for the power cable is also a huge loss in my opinion. That thing has probably saved my laptops more times over the year than anything else.
All in all, I think with the performance upgrades, its great for anyone needing a new laptop. My retina laptop is closing in on 4 years old. But it still cuts 4k fine, edits photos great, and leaves me with more of an interest in an iPad pro for workflow with photography.
A big WTF is the entry non-touch ID MBP....So, they wanted a MBA successor, made that, and then released it priced higher than the MBA line? And they did this WHY?

x ∞But then Tim Cook would have to eat crow when he called a laptop with a touch screen a "diluted" product that was "trying to be a tablet and a notebook and it really succeeds at being neither," and that it is a "compromise in different ways."
Starting price went up quite a bit on new 15" MBP model vs old.
I see they're still selling the old 13.3" and 15.4" MBPs alongside the new models on the Apple Store, and for the same prices as when they were introduced 1.5 years ago too. No shame, Apple. No shame.
I wonder what the performance will be like between the old March 2015 13.3" MBP with 2.7GHz i5 and the new 13.3" MBP with 2.0GHz i5.
Mar. 2015 model = $1,399
new updated Oct. 2016 model = $1,499
or $1,799 for model with Touch Bar
May 2015 model = $1,999
new updated Oct. 2016 model = $2,399

I already ordered one. 13-inch, 3.1GHz/16GB/256GB while the shipping estimates were their shortest. I haven't been waiting months just to still buy the older model that I could have had in my hands literally since the beginning of the year. Price does suck (paying very close to what my 15-inch cost in 2011), but there's so much this old hardware can't take advantage of and carrying it around all day is getting old. I keep going back and forth on if I should cancel and go for 512GB (not really wanting to spend another $200), but that's why I got a 240GB Intel SSD a few months ago (good MLC flash instead of TLC) since I kept planning on not needing much built-in storage. I don't see it being a big issue when I have my iTunes library on my 2011 that already acts like a desktop most of the time and my old Dell XPS running as a NAS.
I ordered a base MacBook Pro to replace my air that I sold months ago ahead of this launch. Was really hoping for new mba with retina. I guess this is as close as I'll get. The good news is the change over to type c should be easy as my work laptop is already all type c, and I have a type c dock at home. Supposed to arrive on Tuesday, I'm pretty pumped to have a computer again.
New MacBook Pros Max Out at 16GB RAM Due to Battery Life Concerns MacRumors Forums
Question: The lack of a 32GB BTO option for the new MBPs raised some eyebrows and caused some concerns (me included). Does ~3GBps bandwidth to the SSD make this a moot issue? I.e. memory paging on a 16GB system is so fast that 32GB is not a significant improvement?
Phil Schiller: Thank you for the email. It is a good question. To put more than 16GB of fast RAM into a notebook design at this time would require a memory system that consumes much more power and wouldn't be efficient enough for a notebook. I hope you check out this new generation MacBook Pro, it really is an incredible system.

So I was at Best Buy today picking up something for a client when I walked past the Apple section. There I overheard a man say to a saleswoman "I want the MBP they announced yesterday, the 15 inch model, please." I thought to myself well he's gonna have to wait a few weeks on that. This lady climbed a ladder and grabbed a 15in silver MBP off the top shelf security cage.
She gets down and is at a register doing something so I walk up to her and say "Did he say he wanted the one they announced yesterday?". She says "Yeah." I said, "that's not going to be available for 2-3 weeks." She's all "Naw-uh, it's right here" and shows me the new cheaper 13in MBP (MB Air replacement) without the new touch bar. She says "we have the 15in version of this in Space Grey (which doesn't exist), I got in my hand, it's the only one we got."
I look at the box and it's a fucking silver MBP. I tried a couple more times to tell her she was selling him the wrong laptop but she was convinced. I would've talked to the guy but I couldn't find him. I thought about going off on the lady but I just said fuck it and walked away. I'm sure the guy has brought it back by now all pissed off

I sometimes linger around Best Buy to hear the comedy. I know who's decent at my local one and who isnt.
In any case I ordered the 13 inch pro with touch bar i7, 16GB RAM 512GB SSD. Hoping to have it in 4 weeks. Now to make sure my wife doesn't notice the touch bar.

You're a half glass full kind of guy, i like you. I think We can be good friends
I think I once bought a laptop, returned it and then bought it again as open box.
on 13" MBP w/ 4 thunderbolt ports, the right side thunderbolt 3 ports run slower than the left side

Thunderbolt 3 data speeds per MacBook Pro port
Late-2016 MacBook Pro models vary slightly in the data speeds they provide to each Thunderbolt 3 port.
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016) delivers full Thunderbolt 3 performance on all four ports.
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) supports Thunderbolt 3 at full performance using the two left-hand ports. The two right-hand ports deliver Thunderbolt 3 functionality, but have reduced PCI Express bandwidth.
Always plug higher-performance devices into the left-hand ports on MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) for maximum data throughput.

Yea, i remember back in 2012ish when they added USB3.0 to the Macs, they were like "we didn't label the ports blue to show that they are USB3.0, this is because all the ports are USB 3.0!" something along the lines of that.
However, considering this is a "pro" machine, there are probably "Pros" out there that this could be an issue for.
For the low end 13" MBP, the SSD can still be replaced. Its not soldered on like the Retina Macbook.

OWC/Macsales had a tear down
Some noteworthy observations from the teardown:
- Solid State Drive module is removable
- Bottom was more difficult to remove than previous generations, but it was not glued
- Speaker module needs to be removed to pull SSD back
- SSD had very strong tape covering the interface port
- Laptop automatically turns on when you open it regardless of pressing power button
- CPU – Intel 6th gen, Skylake i5-6360U
- Memory – This machine uses DDR3 vs DDR4 in the machines with Touch Bar.
- Keyboard – Keys seem to have a bit more throw then the MacBook.
- SSD – Using NVMe driver and an Apple designed controller. (See benchmarks below).

But if their are touting the amount that can be daisy chained, for dual monitors and hard drives, limiting those connections are stupid. This new MBP is not got to get me to buy a new Mac. And if they don't upgrade the MacMini. I'll be buying a PC for my needs.
