Apple: Hardware News and Discussion Thread
So, just came out of the Apple Store. I wanted to try the 12" keyboard, since it's heavily intimated that it will head over to the other models.
I'm pretty sure I don't like it.
I like the travel in the other models. Perhaps it was the smushed layout, but those keys have almost no feel to them. I could probably adapt over time, but I'm not sure I want to.

I'm thinking the old Pro and 13" Air models will be dropped, and at least the 13" Pro will be stuffed into the Air body, or something close to it.
I personally don't need thinner. Lighter, sure, but the thickness is fine as it is. The better lighting on the keyboard would be nice (no bleed), but I'd rather have something that's better to use than nicer to look at.
Not bad with these programs running on MBA 13"
- Firefox with a dozen tabs
- VLC media player
- iTunes
- TextEdit

I'm not sure that I will though. I still have my HP Touchpad keyboard, and it's a real work of art. Love it, except I hate typing any long form work on it. I've always thought it was because it wasn't wide enough, but now I wonder if it's a combination of width and key travel. I can touch-type the shit out of an article, usually. On that, issues.
It could be that I like the spaces in-between, so I can locate keys better. My Logitech keyboards don't have any space between, but they are trapezoidal, so you get that gap. Plus, of course, the travel.
I'm going to have to give it another run, for sure. Might take the HP keyboard with me and compare. It's too bad BB doesn't carry the 12" in stores, as I don't want to have to drive 45 minutes again to the Apple Store. Might head down to Microcenter instead.

My wife made a really valid point (they often do) just now: with school over for at least fifteen months, I don't really have a need to replace my laptop at this time. This means I could wait, see what the new ones bring, and still pick up a refurb from Apple if I don't like them.
Good thing I married smart.

The real use of my current laptop was to do research and homework on the weekends or trips, or log into work if I needed to work on a trip. Since I'll be letting my daughter use it primarily, and I'm done with school, I don't have a need for my own laptop at this point. We can take the one I'm gifting with us if we go somewhere.
The refurbs will still be there when I need one. Who knows, like Whiskers said I might get used to it. I also might need a 15", which is a bit outside budget right now.
They did put some out, and you might be right. It did feel like I was becoming used to the shallow travel, but I can't tell how many mistakes I was making since it seems Notes does autocorrect.
Either way, another vote to waiting.

was thinking I'd have to get a new $80 replacement, then I saw this $17 adapter:
Apple® MagSafe/MagSafe 2 Converter Adapter, White (MD504LL/A) | Staples®
I have an old 85W MagSafe1 adapter that will work with this.

I happened to have ordered an additional MagSafe2 adapter a few days ago, that is arriving soon.
