Apple: Hardware News and Discussion Thread
Wah-waaaaah!
Update: Chronic has issued a correction that unlocked GSM iPhones, not new MacBook airs, are coming to U.S. Apple Stores on Wednesday, claiming his source "mixed up part numbers." According to the rumor, the part numbers for unlocked iPhone 4 models are MC603 (16GB, Black) MC604 (16GB, White) MC605 (32GB, Black) MC606 (32GB, White).
Got a refurb 11" MBA for my MIL last month....I love using it. Whenever its time to upgrade from my 13"MBP....which wont be for awhile...I'm definitely going MBA...specially when the thunderbolt is much more prevalent.
hmm.. current rumors say the back to school promotion will offer $100 itunes gift card, not an iPod touch.. :thumbsdow

Apple's Back to School Promo Launching Wednesday With $100 iTunes Gift Cards?
Monday June 13, 2011 8:24 pm PDT by Eric Slivka
Following a couple of missed rumored launch dates, a report surfaced over the weekend indicating that Apple will finally be launching its annual Back to School promotion this Wednesday. A new report from 9 to 5 Mac corroborates that claim and adds a new wrinkle -- instead of a free iPod as in years past, Apple will be offering $100 iTunes gift cards to education customers purchasing new Macs.
In year's past, Apple's Back to School promotion offered students their usual educational discount plus a free iPod with any purchase of a Mac. This year, 9to5Mac has been told, will be very different. In fact, Apple will not be offering free iPods during this promotion but will instead offer a $100 iTunes gift card.
Such an offer will likely be a letdown for a number of users who have been holding out on Mac purchases in hopes of picking up a free iPod. The free iPod offer has typically been good for the low-end iPod touch, which usually comes in in the $200-$230 range, meaning that this year's offer would contain considerably less value and be for media rather than hardware.

supposedly they're not working on the iPod touch anymore. Kinda like the iPod classic, so they aren't going to give them away this year since they aren't clearing stock for a new model. It's a win win for Apple.
sales have gone down continually every year. People are buying iPhones instead of a separate device and Apple has zero competition so they'll just keep making the current one, it's got crazy hi res screen, two cameras, gyroscope, bluetooth, etc WTF else can you put in there?
IDK if they can put a dual core chip in a device that thin and small at least maybe not yet....

Apple Now Selling Unlocked iPhone 4 in U.S.
June 14, 2011 1:12 am PDT by Arnold Kim
As predicted, Apple has started selling unlocked (GSM) iPhone 4 devices in the U.S. early this morning.
If you don't want a multiyear service contract or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone 4 is the best choice. It arrives without a micro-SIM card, so you'll need an active micro-SIM card from any supported GSM carrier worldwide.
Pricing starts at $649 for a 16GB model and $749 for 32GB model. Both White and Black models are offered.
The main advantage of buying an unlocked iPhone is for international travel, as the device is not dependent on any particular carrier. The U.S. only has one network (AT&T) which fully supports all the features of an unlocked GSM iPhone. T-Mobile is compatible with voice calls, but the 3G network is not compatible. The higher price of the iPhones reflect no-contract pricing as well as the unlocked status of the device. While the iPhone 4 had been sold unlocked in other countries, this is the first time Apple has offered them in the U.S.

FWIW, I just tried this on my 4GB 24" iMac with SSD. I launched a hell of a lot more apps and it was pretty damn impressive. SSD rocks.

The video above was sent in by a reader. He filmed it on his 27" 3.4GHz Core i7, 16GB of RAM and the 256GB SSD option. He opens all the standard applications that come with the iMac simultaneously (though with Front Row and Dashboard deselected, because they're both full-screen apps) as a quick demo of the speed of his new SSD iMac.

'Back to School' Promo to Start Tomorrow - $100 App Store Gift Card Confirmed
June 15, 2011 2:31 pm PDT by Arnold Kim
We've relayed multiple times that the Apple Back to School Promotion would be starting at any minute. The predictions starting kicking off a few weeks ago with today even being suggested a possible launch date. We're finally going to see Apple's Back to School promotion launching tomorrow (June 16th), and we actually have photographic proof of the imminent launch.

The above photos were sent to us by a tipster indicating that the promotion will offer a $100 gift card that can be used in the Mac App Store, iTunes Store, App Store or iBookstore, and that it will launch tomororow. In the fine print it specifically lists "June 16th" as the launch date with the promotion running until September 20, 2011".
The offering of an App Store gift card is a notable departure from Apple's previous Back to School promotions which offered students free iPods with the purchase of a Mac. The new push into App Store credit is a reflection of Apple's new push into the App Store for Mac that launched early this year. The Mac App Store will be the distribution point for Mac OS X Lion and Final Cut Pro X.
