Looks like OS X Server as a separate product is dead...
http://www.apple.com/macosx/lion/
Lion Server is now part of Mac OS X Lion. It’s easy to set up your Mac as a server and take advantage of the many services Lion Server has to offer. Here are just a few of the new features that make server deployment faster, easier, and more powerful than ever.

Now, where are the damn iMacs?
Still complete fail 100%. The 13in still only has a 1280x800 screen resolution. They should have put 1440x900 in it instead and 1680x1050 in the 15in model. I refuse to buy laptops with such shitty resolution. Its the first thing I base my purchase on. Doing design work on small resolution screens sucks.

He must have really good eyes. Stuff would be too small for me to see.
My 14" IBM T400 runs at 1280x800 and it's just fine for my old eyes.

Not all the time that is what my desktop is for. However I would like to be able to still do some design on photo work on it without a painful small screen resolution. Heck a while back in IBM X61 tablet they had a 1400x1050 on a 12in screen. That would be awesome. My last two laptops a IBM T42p 15in standard (1600x1200) resolution and currently a IBM T61p widescreen (1680x1050). Now heck it is even hard to find a 1680x1050 in a 15in for crying out loud.

I definitely want to move to something thin and lite but not at a huge trade in screen resolution.

Also considering the 13in Mac Book Air got a 1440x900 screen why the hell would they not put it in the Mac Book Pro that just seems extremely stupid move on there part.

Choosing between a 13" Pro and Air is difficult. $250 to upgrade the Pro to SSD is expensive. If you don't need DVD, Thunderbolt, and bigger HD, then Air looks better to me.

the deciding factor is going to be whether you need the horsepower of the i5 or i7. I'm already thinking about pulling the trigger on an i7. MUST WAIT until the student ipod promo is back on.

As long as there is a clear upgrade path from 10.6 server then I'm ok with this.

I would take an air over a 13" MBP... But it comes down to a number of factors.

From the install notes it looks like Lion Server is a separate install, so you will probably be fine.

Known Issues with Lion Server
- Lion Server must be installed on an empty disk.
If your mac it not at least Core2Duo, you are going to hate Lion. CoreDuo/Solo macs not supported.

Trying to decide between the 15" and 17". I travel a lot for work so the 15" is winning the battle but I'm in final cut pro a lot and can use the real estate.

Called my local apple store they go on sale tonight hoping they have one in either size with anti glare screen.

I used to run FCP on my old 15" powerbook with no issues. You always adapt to your screen size.

Total horse puckey.

I edit a lot my photography on my 13" MBP at the moment, and I'd bet those photos are at a higher rez than any design work you might be doing. They screen looks good and does the job well.

Red RAW?

If youre starting to really get into all that you should consider a tower road case set up. Build a real transcoding station.

PS: I am DPing a commercial next month using the RED MX. I really wanted the Arri Alexa but its too new and the budget is that big.
The client initially suggested we shoot on 5Ds I feel like RED is the lesser of two evils.

Yes but I still would like more real estate on my screen than 1280x800 provides especially with the two previous screens I am coming from.

We have 3 guys out in LA this week doing some work with RED MX bodies. I was in a rental house in Manhattan 3 weeks ago they were playing with the first EPIC to leave RED, apparently the owner is very close with the owners of RED.

We might get an Alexa for in-house testing here I've heard that alot of people like the Arri more but that's just hearsay.

If you ever want to chat about any of that let me know.

In the film world....we tend to like the Arri way more for many reasons. The Epic is smaller and good for 3D production....which is what the new Spiderman has been filming on since December.

The DP for the upcoming avengers movie choose the Epic after testing for the same 3D reasons. But I've recently heard they killed 3D (thankfully) and are now shooting Alexa.

Tools in the toolbox. But I'm not an overall RED fan.
