Apple: Hardware News and Discussion Thread
I've used my MBA (1.8+SSD) for processing in LR2/LR3 since LR2 came out in mid 2008. I toss in the MBA into my camera bag and it slips in between the back and the dividers where all the gear goes since it's so thin. That way I can have my gear and "photo lab" all in one bag. It really helps when you're traveling.

As much as I love my 13" MBP...its not nearly as fast for processing as my iMac...but it gets the job done when I need it. I figured the MBA would be much slower to use. plus the lack of firewire support for external drives kinda sucks.
I think once they get faster processors, larger capacity SSD drives, and USB 3...then we'll have a game changer.
It's a 24" aluminum. One needs to be VERY careful with the LCD display. I was happy that OCZ makes a 3.5" SSD. There is a issue with the cable not being long enough for a 2.5".

I also got a 1TB external FW800 drive from OWC.

And this is why I want a macbook air. I took a trip down to the apple store and launched every single app in the applications folder and the laptop didn't choke one bit. From the benchmarks I'm seeing, it is outpacing the 13" MBP with the weaker processor, which is a direct tribute to the flash memory.
Now you're making me consider ripping out the hard drive in my iMac. Was it that hard? I've opened up MBPs before. Worse?

Last I checked, there were three screws on the bottom of the "case" when standing up. Remove those and the back comes off. That was a few years ago, though and they may have redesigned the mechanism to open it. Prior to that system it was like friggin neurosurgery to get the damn things out...
You will need suction cups to get the front glass off ($1 at dollar store). The glass comes off very easily. You will also need a small torx screwdriver (don't know the size) and a Philips head. Keep track of where the screws came out as there are several different lengths.
You need to be a bit careful with the isight cable. The LCD on my model had two ribbon cables that needed to be pulled out. The thing that surprised me is that the LCD will quickly get a few bits of dust on it. I was able to blow the dust off of it before putting the glass back over it.
So far I have no complaints with my drive and the 3.5" size made it a drop in replacement.
BTW: In the vid I watched the guy used scotch tape to re-tape the ribbon cables. IMO that's a no no. Scotch tape holds static. I just reused the existing tape.

Pick an area in your house with the least amount of dust and you will be alright.
I did it on my dusty desk and noticed that a few specs of dust got on the LCD pretty quickly but it did blow off. Don't worry about it too much. Once it's all back together, if you notice dust behind the glass you can simply pull the glass off with the suction cups and take care of it. Be more concerned about the way you handle the LCD to avoid fingerprints.

yeah I saw that! IDK how they're going to penetrate the business market without a rack-mountable server, maybe they got something new coming out? but then why would they change the name?
The towers are rack mountable with third party access. Always have been since the G3.
So the Mac Plus is 25 years old.

So I thought that was interesting but then I found this...an iPad and Mac Plus Helmet!

Twenty-five years ago, Apple introduced the Macintosh Plus, a groundbreaking member of the Mac family tree. Industry analysts praised the Plus, which retailed for $2,599 (or what would be a whopping $5,188 today), as the computer Apple should have released in 1984

Not new hardware....just picked this thread since it was recent and didn't want to start a new thread.
Got a little quirk going on with my MBP (circa early 2008). The past couples months or so, my computer no longer will play/load VEVO videos both on YouTube or on the VEVO site. In case you don't know what VEVO is, it's typically the site associated with "official" music videos from artists and most are on YouTube I believe.
It hasn't always been like this.
When I go to a video that's from the VEVO site, it has the little rotating dots symbol in the middle of the black screen where the video would play but never actually loads. Ever. The buttons are also there but greyed out so you can't click them. This includes the 'time bar' of the video as well.
All other videos on YouTube (or anywhere else for that matter) play just fine. There something I'm missing??
FWIW, I'm running OSX 10.6.4.

Do you have any ad blockers or HOST files running? On some sites, videos won't load if access to the ad servers that display the pop up ads on the bottom of the video screen are blocked. For example, Engadget, CBS, College Humor and I think MSNBC videos won't play due to this.
Yup, I checked, VEVO videos won't play for me either and I'll guarantee you that's why. Oh well, fuck em I can watch videos on YouTube
