Android: Tablet News and Discussion Thread
Apparently 4.3 fixed the major lag issues that plagued the N7
Any of you see a difference?

Many users of the original Nexus 7 remember how slow the device could get after a few months of heavy use. At least part of this problem has to do with the way NAND flash stores and deletes data. Android 4.3 comes with a little-hyped feature that could be huge for performance in the future – TRIM support via fstrim.
Nexus 7 cases in black for 99 cents plus shipping and tax from amazon.
Its not in stock yet, but will be in the near future. The slim fit is end of august while the others are next week I believe.
But I just ordered the slimfit. For $6 if it ends up being bad then its not a big loss. But the previous gen cases had good reviews so I'm hoping its good

Would you all pay $100 for a used first gen Nexus 7 8GB? It's mint, comes in box with all accessories, etc.
I only want this for the car/torque pro. I've got my iPhones and iPads for everything else.

Are you a person who jailbroke their iPhone?? The android version of that is called root. And all that info can be found on xda-developers.com
Even without root you can change a lot of things. From keyboards to how your launcher (your 5 homescreens) works through downloading apps.
Also you will get a bigger response in the other android phone thread since not as many come here often. We mostly discuss all android there unless it's specific to tablets.
Finally welcome to amdroid!!

whats a nice sub 100-125 buck 7" Tablet...
the only thing I want is GPS/Bluetooth/wifi/decent screen resolution...
I am thinking of removing my Galaxy Note from the car and replacing it with a 7" tablet...so all it will do is play Pandora while, displaying info from Torque and I will be using it for Navigation as well....
my phone will be tethering wifi

According to IDC, Apple shipped 14.6 million iPads in the 2nd quarter of 2013, a 14% drop from the 17 million tablets it shipped in Q2 2013. Over that same time, Android tablet shipments surged from 10.7 million in Q2 2012 to 28.2 million in Q2 2013, an increase of just under 163%. These reverse trajectories caused iOS and Android’s market shares to essentially flip over the past year: While Apple held a 60.3% market share and Android held a 38% market share in Q2 2012, Android now holds a 62.6% market share and Apple holds a 32.5% market share.
In other news, IDC has found that Windows-based tablets accounted for 4.5% of all tablets shipped in Q2 2013, a big increase from the 1% share that Windows tablets held in Q2 2012. However, Microsoft can’t be pleased to see that Windows RT tablets only accounted for 0.5% of all tablets shipped on the quarter and just barely beat out BlackBerry’s PlayBook, which accounted for 0.3% of all tablets shipped.
IDC’s press release follows below.
Tablet Shipments Slow in the 2nd Quarter As Vendors Look To Capitalize on a Strong Second Half of 2013, According to IDC
SAN MATEO, Calif., August 5, 2013 – As expected, worldwide tablet shipment growth slowed in the 2nd quarter of 2013 (2Q13), according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker. Worldwide tablet shipments finally experienced a sequential decline as total volumes fell -9.7% from 1Q13. However, the 45.1 million units shipped in the second quarter was up 59.6% from the same quarter in 2012, when tablet vendors shipped 28.3 million devices.
Lacking a new product launch in March to help spur shipments, Apple’s iPad saw a lower-than-predicted shipment total of 14.6 million units for the quarter, down from 19.5 million in 1Q13. In years past, Apple has launched a new tablet heading into the 2nd quarter, which resulted in strong quarter-over-quarter growth. Now, Apple is expected to launch new tablet products in the 2nd half of the year, a move that better positions it to compete during the holiday season. Meanwhile, the other 2 vendors in the top 3 also saw a decline in their unit shipments during the quarter. 2nd-place Samsung shipped 8.1 million units, down from 8.6 million in the 1st quarter of 2013, although up significantly from the 2.1 million units shipped in 2Q12. And 3rd-place ASUS shipped a total of 2.0 million units in 2Q13, down from 2.6 million in 1Q13.
“A new iPad launch always piques consumer interest in the tablet category and traditionally that has helped both Apple and its competitors,” said Tom Mainelli, Research Director, Tablets at IDC. “With no new iPads, the market slowed for many vendors, and that’s likely to continue into the 3rd quarter. However, by the 4th quarter we expect new products from Apple, Amazon, and others to drive impressive growth in the market.”
Not all vendors experienced a slowdown during the quarter. PC stalwarts Lenovo and Acer both re-entered the top 5 this quarter. Lenovo continued to make headway into the world of mobility and for the 1st time had shipments surpass the million unit mark in a quarter, shipping a total of 1.5 million devices. This was up 313.9% from a year ago and enough to capture 3.3% market share. Rounding out the top 5 was Acer, which shipped 1.4 million tablets in 2Q13 for 247.9% year-over-year growth and an increase of 35.4% over the 1st quarter of 2013.
“The tablet market is still evolving and vendors can rise and fall quickly as a result,” said Ryan Reith, Program Manager for IDC’s Mobility Tracker programs. “Apple aside, the remaining vendors are still very much figuring out which platform strategy will be successful over the long run. To date, Android has been far more successful than the Windows 8 platform. However, Microsoft-fueled products are starting to make notable progress into the market.”

Its fast, thin, the Sony stuff isnt bad.looks great.
I only had one single night to play around with this 1G NExus 7 and 4.2.x but I can honestly say that 4.3 sped most thing up.
Didn't notice much difference in battery life but again...I only had it for one night before 4.3 kicked in.
Ended up getting this for $105 and I'm very pleased. Great size, love the soft feeling back, fast enough. Can't wait till the car mount and ELM unit come in! I'm not sure the nexus will ever leave my car.
Anil: Can't you pick up Kindle Fire HDs for $150 and root them?

Wow, that looks great. Well executed plan and great TL install.
I'm just looking for a toy and thought the warranty, return ability and sd slot may have some weight. Already have ip2, mini, and iPhone. Looking to near future step into perhaps greener pastures.

^^^ Thanks buddy...
well I bought the tablet for 110 bucks of craigslist....its running 4.3 and was in immaculate condition....
if you want to spend another $150 for warranty, better screen, better graphics, camera, etc then I would suggest get the new one....if you just want a tablet to read and mess around with it, get the old one.....with the new one out, the old one will sell for even less I would think

Yeah, the thing is Staples has the Nook HD advertised on line for $99.00 for the next few days. Otherwise I was looking at CL like you and a few others for the N7.
Nook has ICS (4.2?) and Chrome and Google Play now. This is why the question.
