Android: Tablet News and Discussion Thread
OK, completed. It;s not perfect, but it is MUCH better...
Did a factory wipe/reset. Reinstalled apps, re-set up accounts.
Did a final appcache wipe for good measure.
The tablet is usable again (for now)!

Wow, just got a little (unpleasant) surprise when I looked at my Verizon Wireless cellular bill.
I had a "Long Distance" charge on the invoice for a 7 minute call.
I called Verizon and they explained that the number I called (area code 519) wa sin Canada and therefore there was a charge for the call. The rep was great, said since I had NO IDEA, he would credit the account the $4.00.
HOWEVER, I asked how the hell I was able to make a call to Canada without ANY notice that I would be billed and the rep said there was NO WAY to block outbound to Canada and NO WAY to know as I am dialing that the call will incur fees. There is no recorded message, cell phone alert, etc. Thankfully the call was only a few minutes long.
I can't believe that there is no way for Verizon to simply block the area codes to Canada upon a customer request. I don't have any international plan on my account and thus figured I would not be able to call outside the country. WRONG!
Now I have to memorize all of Canada's area codes so I don't make an expensive mistake...

EDIT: Rep called me back and told me that he found something called USARoamOnly that he would disable to prevent ANY calling outside the U.S. He said he had to dig to find it, and if I ever need to call outside the U.S. I have to call in and have it found and removed!
Double EDIT: Just realized this is in the tablet thread, not the phone thread...

Well, the Nexus7 2012 is running fine now.
Once it had 5.0 on it, I did a factory reset and then also a cache wipe, restored it and now it runs well.
The cache wipes alone did not help, nor did the factory reset to 4, then upgrade to 5.

Got 5.1 OTA a few days ago on my Shield tablet, and it's a dramatic improvement. The Shield always had an annoying "wake-up" period everytime you turned it on, where for about the first minute, everything would run really slow, like a lag, before it "woke up." The 5.1 update completely fixed that.
Takes at least 10-15 seconds to respond to inputs, etc... All I use it for is a e-reader.
I NEED A REPLACEMENT!!!!!
What is out there for a smaller form factor android tablet?
Nexus9? $399????? HWAAAAT?

Just get a phablet sized phone like a G4.
I used my 2013 Nexus 7 every single day when I had a 2013 Moto X. As soon as I got my Note 4, I used the N7 two or three times a week. It became a paperweight a couple of months after that.

Speaking of tablets, Amazon's new Fire 7" is $50 but 1GB RAM and 8GB memory with no expansion. Plus buy 5 and get 1 free (for real). Not a fan of the OS. My younger daughter has one and I hate using it.
My mom has a Fire HD 7.. but its because she won it at work raffle
Anyone try Cyanogenmod 12 on Nexus 7 2012? I have it downloaded and was gonna install tonight.
Seller sold it to me with 4.4.3 on it and it's slow as hell..
Stogie says 4.4.4 is better but if there's not reason not to go to CM12, then I'll just go that route instead..

I just got this tablet after My niece dropped my nexus 7 flat on the face.
Dell Venue 8 pro 7000 32gb
And so far I love it it flys and the screen is amazing. Also it is the best build quality IK have seen in a tablet so far. And that includes iPads.

How do you feel about one of these being the only laptop-like gadget in the house? My 70 year old mom wants one but rather something small like this and simpler OS. Can I actually set up a network for her when she gets wifi or do I have to just let her use my laptop when the network goes down to fix it? She doesn't use Word or Photoshop.

Does anyone on here have a Pixel C or seen one in person at all? My Nexus 7 2013 has started to not want to always charge and I am thinking of replacing it with a Pixel C since there is the discount coupon out right now.

Well I went for it. Ordered a 32gb Pixel C today. Have been wanting a premium build Android tablet for a while now. My Asus Infinity let me down with major memory speed issues. My Nexus 7 2013 has been great but the battery barely last a day now and sometimes charging can take an entire day.
I ordered the keyboard for it as well. Hoping with N coming out soon with split screen and multi window that it will be able to take the place of my laptop when I travel. Only thing I do on a PC anymore it won't be able to do is Photoshop but that is what my desktop is for.

Typing my first post from my new Pixel C that arrived today. Still getting everything setup but so far loving it. Hopefully I won't experience the one main problem of wifi issues that many people seem to have. Going to be loading the beta of N soon once all my Apps finish installing. I will a few pictures later but not much you can't already find on the web. Works great with a mouse when browsing the web as well.

So far the thing has been great. I have been using it with a bluetooth mouse and it really helps when doing tasks I would have typically done on a laptop. I got a little travel one from Logitech that matches the Pixel C design very well.
I do have some issues though. I seem to be one of the few unlucky ones at least based on my readings on the forums that has screen gap on one of the sides that is visually noticeable and I can fit 3 sheet of paper thick into the gap. It is most noticeable in the dock cause it is the top left corner.
I also have a screen click in one specific spot as well. Neither affect the usability of the device but I am still going to try and get an RMA and another one.

The Pixel C does not at this time work with Citrix Receiver. Have spent pretty much all day working trying to get it connected and it just gives a black screen. Every other Android Device I have will connect to it besides the Pixel C.

My screen is busted but otherwise works perfectly

Not 100% ready to ditch my Nexus 7 yet.
Some more updates on the Pixel C experience though. After some more forum reading it seems most tablets are plagued with the clicking noise in the spot I have mine and some even say over time it has somehow gone away.
I have decided against trying to RMA at this time over just the gap from the glass to the metal frame. The spot on the inner frame I thought was a machine mark and bugging me turned out to be a piece of dirt. I am sure more will get in there but I am at least going to wait closer to my 15 day return window first as I am not sure I want to risk getting a refurb during the RMA process.
Citrix Receiver does not appear to be the source of my problems. I can use XenApps apps in Citrix Receiver I am just not able to connect to Virtual Desktops right now for some reason.

So after some great help from xda-developers forum my Citrix Virtual Desktop problem is solved as well. It appears on the Pixel C it does not pull down the config properly so you have to create a config text file for it ahead of time.
I have a 1st gen nexus as well. but I got this 2nd gen with a smashed screen and I ordered replacement screen for it. And while I am waiting for this screen, I dropped the 1st gen in my car and as the seat automatically moved forward when starting the car, it crushed the screen

My 1st gen was pretty slow, I hope the 2nd gen is much faster

damn that is some luckMy second gen is still nice and fast. The battery life has become terrible though. Once I have my Pixel C fully setup I might try a full reset on it and see if that helps at all.
tell me about it. I was so mad. I just heard a crunch and I knew what it was.
