Android: Tablet News and Discussion Thread
Got a Nexus 7 (16G WiFi) for Xmas, great tablet.
Highly recommend it, much easier than a 10" tablet.
iOS is still slightly better but I'm still getting used to Android in general so that may change.

I picked mine up today.
Still syncing up my apps. I am picking the ones I want on the 7 compared to the ones on my phone.
My only complaint is lack of ebook reader that isn't google.
Aldiko is OK but it lacks in ease of use compaired to the default ebook reader on the ipad

Also, if you're going to play with custom ROMs in the future, unlock your bootloader now because you're going to need to wipe your device once to do it.

We got my son a Nexus 7 for xmas, and I've spent a considerable amount of time playing around on it. I must say that I've been thoroughly impressed with it so far, both in terms of quality and performance. If you're in the market for a smaller tablet, the Nexus 7 is a no-brainer. I just hope I'm as happy with the larger Nexus 10.
After doing considerable research on 10" tablets, including the 4th gen iPad, I decided to pull the trigger on the Nexus 10 on Monday. While the lack of an SD drive made me hesitant, I liked the overall product. Ordered the 32 gb through the Play Store, and just received a notification that it had been delivered this afternoon! Can't wait to get home and give it a spin!

I was one the fortunate ones that actually recieved theirs before the holidays! Luckily my wife orderd a 16GB N10 which was delivered just before Christmas.
I couldn't be happier with the product although the lack of integrated SD card makes me wish she had gotten me the 32GB. There is a work around, but an integrated option would have been nicer.
Most users complain about the lack of an app ecosystem, and i have to agree there isn't a whole lot thats been optimized for tablets, but that seems to be changing on a daily basis! The fun is just getting started!

Played around with it for a little bit last night, but had to get some other things done, so it was brief.
My initial impression is positive. It feels solid, and I like the grippy back on it. The display is beautiful! As some reviews have said, it doesn't quite have the color saturation of some other displays, but it's still good, and the resolution is simply amazing. I've read complaints about light bleed with the N10, and mine does suffer from the slightest bit in the lower right corner. It's only slightly visible on dark/black screens with the brightness turned way up. I'll live with it for now.
So far, every app I ran looked good, and operation has been very smooth. I can't really comment further until I spend some more time with it. I'll post a more thorough review once I get more time with it.
I'd definitely have to agree with this. While the N10 has an impressive display, very few apps can take advantage of it, or even lesser tablet displays. This should be rapidly improving in the near future. I bet $500+ on it, and will have a very unhappy wife if I'm wrong, as she wanted the iPad.

I have been loving my Asus Infinity since I got it except for the fact the keyboard most places are selling now has a plastic bottom and it felt cheap compared to the metal back of the Infinity. Well after much research I was able to find a place where people listed the correct part number for the metal bottom one and find an unopened one on eBay for sale. It feels much better made compared to the plastic one and now feels like it was not an after thought. I assume they did it to save on manufacturing costs but it definitely cheapened the feel of what should be a premium device for the cost.

Invest in one of these, I placed an order this morning for one. Charging via the pogo connector is much faster.
I think it's kinda lame that the micro usb charger doesn't draw enough power to charge the device when in use, but I'm assuming the pogo charger was left out to keep costs lower.
Returned the Microsoft Surface (tried to like it, but Windows RT just sucks) and my 32 gb Nexus 10 is being delivered tomorrow. Can't wait.

^any reviews on it?
I don't see the point. Nothing special and barely any faster then the standard charger compared to the video they have.
I love putting the brightness on very high on everything I use, but battery life sucks with it on max :/

^ reviews are in this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...2#post37016172
Last page on pg 39 of that thread:
General consensus from everyone who has received theirs is that the N10 charges much faster via the pogo connector - hopefully it draws enough power so that it still charges the N10 while its being used.
Side Note: The Microsoft Surface comes with a magnetic pogo charger and it charges from 0 to 100% in a little over an hour.

Ordered mine before Christmas and got it Monday..... Been using it all week and love it so far. Definitely charges faster than USB, 25-30% at least!

Guys,
What apps are you using to stream television shows? My wife watches a bunch of shows via hulu but to use the tablet variant on our N10, you have to buy a subscription to hulu+. I know the play store has episodes but also requires purchase.
I also tried the AT&T uverse app thinking i could watch episodes that were recorded by my dvr. This is not the case and i can assure you the app is a complete waste of time.
Appreciate any guidance!

Just picked up a 32 N10... I have a iPad 4 also (wifey use), but I'm tried of the wireless boat of the laptop even with wi-fi and a battery. I just wanted something to surf, email, and read the papers without a chore.
The Apple may be a better long term solution, but for my needs, we'll see how the Jelly Bean stacks ups against the iOS.

Got the Nexus 10... Very impressed. THE APPLE 4 may be a little more smoother in touch. But coming from ICS on the phone to JB 4.2.2. it is like old hat.
Some other comparisons... With the nexus and ipad side by side, the nexus is faster over the wifi, The display isn't that big of an issue. Both are great.
After the Turbo Tax season, I think the laptop will be gathering dust.

That set up would be so perfect with the ASUS Padfone. Have a Ubuntu phone that docks into the tablet giving you a tablet/desktop mode then you can stream to a larger TV screen for media mode via HDMI. Google needs to unify Chrome and Android faster. Maybe I/O will bring that. Exciting times ahead for the mobile world.
Chrome doesn't support plugins yet. You have a few options though:
- You can install an alternate browser such as Dolphin or Firefox and use their adblcker plugins
- If you haven't updated to 4.2.2 yet, Adblock Plus in the market will block ads all across Android not just in the browser. No root is required but Google blocked the exploit for security reasons in 4.2.
- Root the phone and install Adaway or Adfree. Like adblock plus above, this will block ads all across Android not just in the browser.

Not a happy camper. Jelly Bean 4.1.2 update on my Note 10.1 resulted in me losing flash. Funny, is that I'm running the same 4.1.2 on my TouchPad, and the flash that I installed via apk works fine.
Help? ideas? I don't want to buy Puffin to browse flash websites.

The easiest way is to install any of the alternative browsers that support plugins (such as Flash):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...nlCcm93c2VyIl0.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...LmZpcmVmb3giXQ..
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...WRicm93c2VyIl0.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...3Nlci5mcmVlIl0.
^I think you get the idea. Pretty much any of the alternative 3rd party browsers will work with flash, Puffin included. And because this is Android, you can make it the default browser if you want. Another app that'll come in handy if you like to use Chrome a lot like I do is Flashify:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...VyYnJvd3NlciJd
It allows you to share the website you're using to another browser of your choice if you need flash instead of the clunky copy and paste.
If you have root access, you can install the AOSP browser (which is what you have in your TouchPad and every other vanilla Android) but this requires some technical skills.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1780746
^What it technically does is install the AOSP browser in /system/app/. In some cases you will need to rename the BrowserProxy.apk to something else as it prevents the AOSP browser from working for whatever reason. Also found in /system/app/. Lastly, don't forget to enable plugins in the browser settings.
Wondering if anyone uses the android tablet to take handwritten notes?
Looking for a good stylus that allows me to write like I normally do.
An app that converts writing to text would be awesome too.
Thoughts?

I only use Dolphin, I love this browser, but even that does not work on Note 10.1... I guess I'll be rooting it. Thanks.

There are plenty other note taking apps as well. Evernote is pretty awesome and if you use it with Skitch its almost everything you could ever need for notetaking. There are a few other pure Notetaking apps as well that do as good of a job. FreeNote is pretty good too:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ZW5vdGVwcm8iXQ..
There is a keyboard that will convert whatever you write into text but I can't recall it at the moment. If I come across it again I'll let you know. Maybe it was this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...53cml0ZXBhZCJd
Hmm...did not know that. I'm using CM on all my devices and it comes with the AOSP browser so I don't usually stay too far from it. Try Naked or Boat. Those two are based on AOSP. They're lighter and faster than the AOSP browser but the UI is just ugly. Lol. If you're going to install AOSP browser, use a file explorer with Root privileges and navigate to /system/app/ folder. Change the permissions of the AOSP Browser (usually Browser.apk) to rw-r--r--. Also rename the BrowserProviderProxy.apk to anything you want (BrowserProviderProxy.bak) then reboot. If it's not there then don't worry about it.

Many swear by LectureNotes. I for now use S Notes, it converts handwritten quiet well. If you will find something cool, please post!
To answer about the stylus. I came across the following and currently use the JustMobile Alupen.
For handwriting, I hear the Adonit Jot Pro is pretty good but they eventually break after a certain while:
For all around balance, the Wacom Bamboo Solo is pretty good:
My brother has the Bamboo Solo which feels really great in the hand. Great balance and everything. Rubber is smooth enough and doesn't drag like those cheap ones. Precision is average in terms of hitting the spots. I was about to buy this one but at the time I was looking it was out of stock everywhere.
I ended up getting the Alupen by JustMobile and I love it. Its thick and heavy and feels solid in the hand. (That's What She Said) In terms of smoothness, its pretty close to the Bamboo Solo. I normally switch between the Alupen and a generic Roocase stylus I picked up for $5 when I used to take notes. I got the Alupen mainly for drawing in Sketchbook. It works awesome for that btw. It does well enough for note taking on its own.
From what I've read and researched, the Adonit jot pro is as close you'll get to a real stylus without getting a Galaxy Note or a laptop that has a Wacom stylus. Its very precise and writes like a real pen/pencil. It has a high point of failure though as the tip eventually break over time. They are replaceable though but I don't know how much the tip are. You need just the tip.....

Thanks guys, since the nexus is 7inches, I was hoping for somethign very precise, but it looks like that may not really exist due to tech limitations. I found one with a 4mm tip, but it's $30+S/H...

Refurbed 16gb Nexus 7 is on sale for $153 + free shipping at Newegg, if you check out with v.me by visa checkout.
But beware, there's no returns for Refurbed products on Newegg - only exchange for another refurbed unit while they're in stock.

This is a combo. Mom been sick so we have been spending turns at night at her house. No WiFi sucked. My dumbass didn't realize through our ATT plan that tethering was included.
Bluetooth eats the hell out of the phone and tablet' but it's not too bad since I keep them plug in.

Next nexus 7 supposed to have better screen, using a qualcomm processor. Should be same price and built by Asus I think. Also should have a smaller bezel.
I think I may get this next one when it comes out.

1920x1200 resolution - 320 ppi
Snapdragon S4 Pro at 1.5GHz
2 GB RAM
Front and rear cameras
Pretty nicely specced and snappy in the video. Wonder if they can keep the price range the same as the first gen. If they can, then man I think I'm gonna want one. We'll find out tomorrow.
