Android: Tablet News and Discussion Thread
there's an article on the verge about this. How Nvidia is trying to make parts cheaper overall by going to all manufacturers to bring down their prices so they can build these $200 tablets. But I wouldnt be surprised if google is making a profit on this maybe breaking even? Probably thinking they will compensate their losses if they get more users attracted to google play
They're selling them basically at cost. ASUS I'm sure makes money for the hardware but Google makes nothing from it. They're banking on the purchaser to consume media in the Play Store which is where they recoup that cost. Makes sense considering they give you $25 to use in the store when you purchase one, Transformers and some Magazines. Once you get a taste of what the Play Store offers with that $25, they hope you come back to repurchase things. Also, previous Android builds prior to Honeycomb/Ice Cream Sandwich never asked for a Credit Card when setting up the Market so no one ever bothered to do it. I'm guessing with the $25 credit, they'll make you set it up to get it.
Apparently, the Nexus 7 doesn't have a Camera app by default. Modaco restored the functionality with a shortcut link via an app in the Play Store:

He also got Google Wallet to work with it using his modified wallet apk:

I always thought Google Wallet needed a data connection to unlock it with a pin and to make the transaction but apparently not. I guess the transaction just requires the NFC transfer the info to the PayPass terminal.

Did you preorder from the Play Store? Yeah the limited storage is a bummer but you can create a samba, ftp, or any kind of networking share to solve that issue I guess. USB OTG also works with USB sticks/drives if you have root using Stick Mount. There's also the WiDrive solution which could potentially work and are getting cheaper nowadays.Of course, all of these solutions means you'll be tied down to having an actual connection to your network/drives which can be limited since the tablet doesn't have a 3G chip. Although, I don't know how difficult it would be to hack on a 3G USB dongle since they're already able to do it on the other tablets if you really need it that bad.
Haven't pre-ordered either. I'm gonna wait until the stores get them on hand, preferably at Staples to save on that $14 2-day shipping and possibly use a coupon. I know some people on Slickdeals were already able to apply a $5 off purchase via the in-store kiosk at Staples. I'm sure more coupons will crop up as they normally do with Staples.
Between my Ipad and Iphone, I think my Nexus 8GB will be ok with the streaming. I looked at the piratebay today and couldnt find one thing I wanted to steal. I watch my movies on the Ipad and rent it in Itunes, signed up for Spotify Premium, Pandora, Google Music, etc. I think the 8GB will be great for a 7 inch tablet, something I can stick in my backpack that has quick internet, email and a pretty good size ereader. Im excited to get it. I can buy the goflex satellite if I need.

fun fact: they designed it with extra borders you see around the screen so you can hold it in one hand and have a coffee/sandwich in the other and read easily. And on landscape the bottom has more border because your one hand will have more weight farther away so you will need more grip to hold it And still be able to read with one hand.
I'm blanking on the word to use so i'm just gonna say border around the screen for now

Asus Infinity is supposed to be out Monday at Best Buy if it doesn't get pushed back. Definitely plan on checking it out. 7in tablet just doesn't seem big enough to me.
...so, I was told that every Staples store had a Nexus 7 demo, I walked into one with the intention to pre order and the manager told me he had one in the box for sale! Said he was given the green light to sell it just earlier today

^Nice. How are you liking it? It seems most stores are sold out now.

I hope the stores get more stock soon cause I really want to buy one next week or so. Hopefully, Amazon also picks up on it for the tax free and 2 day Prime shipping cause I'd be all over that.
Google's Nexus tablet selling fast across retail chains
(Reuters) - Google Inc's "Nexus 7" tablet is off to an encouraging start, with major retailers running out of the gadgets as the Internet company's first entry in an increasingly crowded market showed up in U.S. stores on Friday.
GameStop said on Friday it had already run through its first two allocations of the tablet, co-developed by Google and Taiwan's Asustek that starts at $199 and has drawn glowing reviews from major gadget reviewers.
Sam's Club, the warehouse chain owned by Wal-Mart Stores Inc, and Staples listed the device as being out of stock on their websites as of Friday. Office Depot's website continued to offer the device for sale as of the afternoon.
Google unveiled the 7-inch tablet, which the company hopes will allow it to better compete against Apple Inc and Amazon.com Inc and funnel more people into its trove of online content, at its annual developer conference in San Francisco at the end of June.
Consumers have been able to pre-order the tablet from Google and several retailers in past weeks, and Google said it began shipping devices to consumers on Friday.
"We blew through the first two allotments," a GameStop spokesperson said.
A third allotment of preorders will be available in August. The game retailer declined to share exact number of preorders.
The Nexus 7 uses Google's Android mobile software, which has become the most prevalent operating system for smartphones globally, but has so far failed to make a big splash in the tablet market.
By taking a greater role in the tablet arena, Google hopes to ensure that its online services remain front-and-center to consumers, as tablets by Apple and Amazon are increasingly becoming gateways to the Web and Web-based content such as movies and music.
Google executives have been quoted saying that the company will not generate a profit margin when the Nexus 7 is sold in retail stores. A report by research firm IHS iSuppli on Wednesday estimated that the bill of materials for the $199 version of the device, which features 8GB of flash memory and a high-end Tegra 3 processor by Nvidia Corp, is $152.
Apple still dominates the market for touch-screen tablet computers with its two-year old iPad. Amazon.com's $199 Kindle Fire tablet is based on open-source Android computer code, but the device features a customized interface that does not use many Google services.
The Nexus 7 has drawn accolades from reviewers like the Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg. Pundits reckon the $199 Nexus 7 may seriously threaten the same-priced Kindle Fire, especially since Google's offering has a camera and a higher-resolution screen.
Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, speaking to reporters on Thursday at the Allen & Co conference in Sun Valley, said there was "immense demand" for the Nexus 7 in the first week after it was introduced.
Shares in the company climbed 1.1 percent to $576.52, buoyed by a broader U.S. market rally.

I'm not sure if I ever said that I didn't see a use for them... but I know I've ranted about the iPads before. And perhaps the price tag that they come with. I know several times either I was using my gf's iPad 2 or I was at the Apple store checking them out and couldn't run certain sites because of flash, and thought it was disappointing. I can't tell you how many times my gf would be browsing with her iPad and can't view certain sites and would ask if she could use my phone
But all I now is... after the Asus announcement was made at the last CES, I posted this (see #4538): https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...t#post13479317
I may have made negative remarks about tablets in the past, but IMO the game has changed... I know for sure I would NEVER pay $600 for a tablet (of ANY brand or OS).

LOLZ!
