Android: Phone News and Discussion Thread
Those are technical terms. :-)
What you all were talking about with SMS is another advantage, but don't get me started...I could rattle on for quite a while.
I really came in here to see if anybody was looking at the Nokia 7.1 or the LG V40. :-)
I'm very excited about the V40. I went from V10 to my current V20. It's strange that LG kinda gets swept under the rug. They are 100% top tier devices. They 5 camera setup was said to be overkill. Yet the reviews are saying otherwise. So many options. If audio is your thing it has a boombox speaker and a headphone jack. Quick charge wireless and water resistant. 6.4-inch OLED FullVision display. It's a sexy phone. My one and only compliant about LG is they are always slow to roll out updates.
I had a V30 as my Android play around phone for quite a while. If the "boombox" means the kind of speaker that's in the V30...that's not exactly something to brag about, IMHO.
However...if you like to plug in headphones, the LG DAC is amazingly good. It's only *really* good with really good headphones, however. Just bear that in mind.

Oxygen's not too bad, and it doesn't slow down updates very much. I think the OnePlus 6 got Pie almost immediately.

A soft pass for me here. Watched the rollout and it's not significant enough. I did dust off my old Pixel 1 that crapped out and got a boot loop death error and forced me to buy the Pixel 2. I was wondering if it'd stay functional long enough to maybe trade in on a Pixel 3; and wouldn't you know it? It's working just fine now.
Wife preordered a pink Pixel 3 so I'll play around with it a little bit to see if it'd be worth sidegrading.

The wireless charging is really nice (about damn time!).

Yeah, it's really weird. It wouldn't stay on for more than like 10 minutes before. Now it's been days and I've been able to let it update to Pie.
Really strange. Glad I didn't rage-huck it at a wall.

Apple: Here's the most uninspiring keynote since 2007
Google: Hold my beer
I love Pixels. I love the idea of a phone being a vessel of software and AI. But dang, the hardware and the changes just aren't inspiring.

The rumor is google gave the pixel team three chances.. pixel, pixel 2 and now pixel 3.
in the meantime; they scooped up HTC's phone division.
Rumor is; The HTC team will have a crack at it with the next gen phones.
we could see a rebranding of the "pixel" line

That's about how I felt, too.
I don't think Google was trying to go after Apple and Samsung, however. I think they were just putting the 845 in a new device, and improve incrementally on the previous device.
I think they did that.
People who buy bare bones devices like the Pixel and the OnePlus are a unique breed, in a way that's sort of, "You get it or you don't" and they're okay if you don't.
I think battery is just battery. All phones suffer as battery ages.
I personally think Samsung has improved their OS quite a bit. I remembered usually by 1 year mark, my Samsung phones would start acting laggy and slow.
With the Note 8, 7 months in. 0 issue.

I can upgrade whenever and it won't cost me a penny, but I've been happy with the phone and nothing out right now seems worth the hassle of upgrading to.
S7 Edge is a great phone. It was my first S series as I had to insurance claim my Note 4 and the 8 wasn't out yet. I don't mind a smaller phone and it the OS has some really cool settings. I still haven't taught myself to use the side calling though.
Messed with the Pixel for a while. Felt good. Camera is awesome. All the talk about the notch being crazy big and ugly didn't bother me at all. In fact I think it a great looking device.
I really liked it. The display was great. Took some pics and they were just amazing compared to my current device. The front camera portrait mode showed me wrinkles I wasn't even aware I had. Honestly never been more impressed with a camera. Even in comparison to friends that have the X and XSmax iphones. Did't have time to dig too deep into it. But I'll have time for that since it will most likely be my next device.
