Debating on either Note9 or wait until the Note10 comes out. However, after seeing some of the other Androids that you guys have posted; making it much harder to decide now

Pixel 3XL

So I was listing to music via bluetooth to my speaker while painting. Like I do all a lot. I went to take a pic and my camera just wouldn't work. Just went to black screen. I closed out and went to my messages to try and take a pic like but wouldn't work. I thought maybe it was a little glitch so I put phone in my pocket and carried on. Looked at my phone a little later and it was off. So I thought, ok maybe the battery was just about to die that explains it. Driving home I was thinking and there is no way my battery was dead. I had 90 some percent. Tried charging and turning on but nothing. So finally Googled it and turns it out it was a problem with the OG Pixel and the 2. I held the on button for like 10 seconds and it powered on. Working fine. Still worried though.

Weird...

I know there was an issue (I have experienced as well) where if you open the camera app and don't close out, eventually it puts the camera into a "standby" mode where it won't work, and makes the entire phone generally unresponsive. Might be related.

Should've got an iPhone

Jk!! How is the night sight? Didn't know it had that, looks amazing as long as there aren't windows/reflective surfaces in the picture. IMO it's a real gamechanger in the phone market.

I think it's more of an OS issue then a hardware issue. I've had multiple Android phones that did that from time to time, but it's not a frequent thing (at least in my case). I'd keep an eye on it though.

I use the Gboard keyboard and I keep missing the space bar. Phone is slightly larger than last phone so I gotta got that memory muscle down.

I had my Pixel 3 XL lock up on me about a week ago when I tried to double click the power button to open the camera. It took about 10min till the phone ended up rebooting itself. Until then the scren was just black. This is the first time I have experienced this and I have used this shortcut with all of the Pixel phones I have had. I figured it was just a software glitch but will be keeping my eye out for it to happen again.

So, it's really great.

lol. He is pretty energetic but he slows down after a long day of tormenting the other dogs, barking at the cat, chasing squirrels, being bad at the dog park, etc.

https://9to5google.com/2019/01/21/an...iers-sim-lock/

Android Q will include more ways for carriers to SIM lock your phone

Jan. 21, 2019

Since last week’s leak, it’s been clear that Android Q is going to include some positive changes for Android going forward, like system-wide dark mode and new permissions settings. Unfortunately, it’s not all good things coming in Android Q, as new code changes show that network carriers will have more ability to lock your phone down to specific networks via your SIM card.

Over the weekend, four commits were posted to various parts of Android’s Gerrit source code management, all entitled “Carrier restriction enhancements for Android Q.” In them, we see that network carriers will have more fine-grained control over which networks devices will and will not work on.

More specifically, it will be possible to designate a list of “allowed” and “excluded” carriers, essentially a whitelist and a blacklist of what will and won’t work on a particular phone. This can be done with a fine-grained detail to even allow blocking virtual carrier networks that run on the same towers as your main carrier.

Restriction changes are also on the way for dual-SIM devices. At the moment, carriers can set individual restrictions for each SIM slot, but with Android Q, carriers will be able to lock out the second slot unless there’s an approved SIM card in the first slot. This SIM lock restriction is applied immediately and will persist through restarting the phone, and even doing a factory reset.

Thankfully, in both cases, emergency phone calls will still work as expected, regardless of any restrictions on the particular SIM cards in your phone.

9to5Google’s Take:

Looks like buying an unlocked phone instead of one from a carrier will become more important in Android Q and beyond.

Video of folding phone that Samsung apparently mistakenly put on their Vietnam site. Someone copied it before Samsung realized their mistake and took it down:

Just picked up the OnePlus 6T from Tmobile for my Gf the other day... $670 OTD ($580 + $20 bs fee + tax)

All i have to say is Wow.. It is a much better phone than what the price suggested. I would put it up there with the flagship phones, except it is 30-40% cheaper!

OnePlus 6 and 6T are stupendous buys. If you have to be an Android person, this makes a hell of a lot of sense.

I'm not 100% convinced that fingerprint ID on the screen was ready for prime time at the time the 6T came out. To me, there's an annoying little tiny, minuscule but fully perceivable delay. FaceID to me is the most perfect thing there is right now and everything else pales in comparison.

But I've handled the 6 and the 6T and I think they're great, just incredible devices at any price. That they're available so cheaply makes them a no brainer, IMHO.

The only thing I do not like about the version sold by T-Mobile is that they've removed the dual SIM functionality, so I would tend to buy one directly from OnePlus so that I'd be able to use two different providers at once.

I use T-Mobile and a Verizon MVNO at the same time on my XS Max, and it helps sometimes. No reason not to do it if you can. :-)

The "McLaren" edition of the 6T has more memory than most of us would ever need, even if you want to argue that Android needs more memory. For most of us, paying more for that edition will be a waste.

Just throwing that out there in case anybody's inclined to make what would be a mistake for most of us. :-)

I'm firmly in the Apple ecosystem, but this guy knows his stuff and in the Android world I would tend to take his word for it. This is Gary from Android Authority.

Sorry about the cheesy commentary. It's still a valid test. LOL....

Needless to say, I'd get a new 6 if I could find one, considering my minor trepidation over the micro-delay in on-screen fingerprint ID.

Verizon's $30 activation is waived if you port out within 3 days.

All you need is an H2O sim for $1 at Best Buy

Yah 6T whether we are talking about the hand feel or the performance was shocking to me since i always had the perception that China made phones are cheap because they suck ... But it kept on popping on during my research as one of the best phones to buy right now.

The finger print ID on the Screen is the same as my Samsung finger print on the back, which i use every day. Except the 6T Finger print on screen is x times faster than the Samsung one. and the face ID is scary fast, it makes you question if your phone was even locked.
The reason i got the Tmobile was because of the warranty and since it was a gift for my GF.... she would not care about dual SIM... she doesn't even know what dual SIM is...

Now i might get Huawei for my next phone security concerns are not relevant to me since i suspect US government has been watching us for a long long time already. Makes no difference if more join the party of surveillance

I'm always interested in such stark contrasts in experiences. I can perceive the minute delay in activation of the fingerprint ID on the screen, perceive it enough that I find it slightly annoying.

That does not diminish my recommendation of the OnePlus, however. :-)

Facial recognition. Not Face ID. Just be careful. Android facial recognition is not like Face ID.

I would never use a Huawei phone, even if it was free. Some companies forbid their employees from using them.

Their IP theft is terrible and they will never, ever stop.

^ i am not defending to Huawei or anything since i have never owned 1 of their products or actually held one in my hand.

But has there been any real concrete evidence that Huawei has been doing whatever the government said they are doing? or is this just speculation and because the government and intel agency said so?

No convictions have been made yet, but the sort of accusations being made don't seem like they can be made lightly or without hard evidence.

There is this:

On July 10, 2013, at the same time that Huawei China and Huawei USA were falsely claiming that the conduct of A.X. and F.W. was “isolated,” constituted a “moment of indiscretion,” and was contrary to Huawei’s corporate policies, Huawei China launched a formal policy instituting a bonus program to reward employees who stole confidential information from competitors. Under the policy, Huawei China established a formal schedule for rewarding employees for stealing information from competitors based upon the confidential value of the information obtained. Employees were directed to post confidential information obtained from other companies on an internal Huawei website, or, in the case of especially sensitive information, to send an encrypted email to a special email mailbox. A “competition management group” was tasked with reviewing the submission and awarding monthly bonuses to the employees who provided the most valuable stolen information.

Whether or not Huawei's founder/president has an ongoing connection to the Chinese government, we will never truly know. But there's great reason to suspect it.

I'm not the main account holder on my service so it's a little bit trickier for me than just putting in my sim like when I buy outright. Maybe end of year, I'll re-explore upgrading since my phone technically is like 3 mos old.

It's exactly like buying the phone outright. It doesn't matter who main account holder is since you're not doing anything to your existing account(s).

You're setting up a new account with Verizon and getting a new number with them. You keep your AT&T account and number. Once new Verizon account is set up, port out the new Verizon phone # they give you to H2O Wireless later that day or the next day. Once that's done, take out sim card from your current (AT&T?) phone and put it into Pixel 3, and done.

Actually, since Pixel 3 is unlocked it will work on all carriers -- Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint, and any one of the MVNOs.

Ok. i guess we just have different opinions on this kind of thing.
For me, because there is so much motivation and incentives from US to destroy Huawei due to their 5G progress and implementation, it is really hard for me to believe either one.
Just look at our government right now and the shit come out of their mouths. I would not be surprised if they are doing this for other reasons than what is published. But at the same time, i would not be surprised if Huawei is really what US has been portraying it to be.

That is why i take this kind of shit with a grain of salt because there is no good guys in this whole thing... There is no reason for me not to buy Huawei just because Trump said so... When it is proven that Huawei has installed some kind of chip in their phone to steal info for China government, then yes, fuck them. But until then, i personally will buy phone based on specs, price and features, instead of politics.

Actually if Trump says dont buy Huawei, then i will buy it. But if one day if he says to buy China phones, i actually might boycott China phones

Samsung Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, Galaxy 10+ and Galaxy S10 5G just announced.

https://www.cnet.com/news/new-galaxy...canner-and-5g/

New Galaxy S10 phones bring it: 4 rear cameras, 1TB of storage, in-screen fingerprint scanner and 5G

With the Galaxy S10, Samsung celebrates its 10th anniversary Galaxy S phone by going big and bold. How bold? Each of the four new Galaxy S10 models is more impressive than the last: there's the cheaper S10E ($750), the Galaxy S10 ($900), S10 Plus ($1,000) and Galaxy S10 5G, the brand's first 5G phone (price TBA, as are UK and Australian prices for the whole range).

This is Samsung seeking to whip up excitement, roar back in sales and defend its title as the world's top smartphone brand. But the Galaxy S10 phones also represent a quest for perfection.

What does "perfection" mean to Samsung in 2019? An edge-to-edge screen with teeny-tiny bezels. The (remarkable) ability to wirelessly charge another device. An Infinity-O display that cuts a small circle (or oval) to make room for front-facing cameras. The world's first ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint reader, which unlocks the Galaxy S10 using sound waves. Up to four rear cameras. Up to 1TB of built-in storage. The all-new One UI. Android Pie. A cutting-edge Snapdragon 855 processor. And, in one case, 5G capabilities.

This is an impressive list of changes, but when I held them in my hands (except for the 5G model, which we couldn't touch), the Galaxy S10 phones looked and felt extremely familiar. That's not a bad thing at all. It means the camera "notch" stays out of the way, and that the edge-to-edge screen feels natural. And yes, you still get a headphone jack. Where Apple dramatically retooled the iPhone X by removing its signature home button and adding a screen notch, Samsung opted for an unbroken continuum. The Galaxy S10 simply picks up where the Galaxy S9 left off.

One thing does startle me though, and that's the fact that none of the four new Galaxy S10 phones has 3D face unlock. The 5G model will come with a 3D depth-sensing camera on the front and back, but that will only assist with photography and AR, not with the iPhone XS-style of unlocking your phone with your face. (More on this in the fingerprint unlocking section below.)

Preorders for all but the 5G phone begin on Feb. 21, for a March 8 release date. Each preorder comes with a free set of Galaxy Buds as a gift.

. . . .

It seems that the specs on the 5G version is not going to worth the price

Oh, I wasn't even thinking of the government. I mean, I have always followed the letter of the law and all

I just don't trust the Chinese government or companies I don't care what Trump says at all, you could pay me a thousand dollars and give me a free top-end Huawei phone and I still wouldn't use it.

My ex worked in information security and badgered me about that shit, and now my current company is super strict on it, so... yeah gotta take it seriously. You don't use a VPN at home?
