I cant say with any certainty, but it may also have been a way to purposefully generate business loses to offset gains or to have the losses carry forward for tax purposes so they will offset future gains taxes until they are used up.

Samsung Revives Galaxy Note 7 With New ‘Fandom Edition’

Galaxy Note 7 FE is coming to retailers’ shelves on July 7 with different components

June 27, 2017

SEOUL— Samsung Electronics Co. is quietly rejuvenating its tarnished Galaxy Note 7 smartphone.

A refurbished version of the premium smartphone, whose global recall last year garnered unwanted attention for the South Korean technology giant after some caught fire, is coming to retailers’ shelves on July 7 with different components under the name Galaxy Note 7 FE, according to people familiar with the matter.

The FE stands for “Fandom Edition,” one of the people said.

The device will initially be available for consumers in South Korea, with relatively modest inventory for release in other countries yet to be announced, one of the people said, adding that Samsung is expected to release at most 400,000 devices among three major telecom companies in South Korea.

The refurbished Note 7 will be priced below 700,000 South Korean won ($616), although smartphone prices are generally adjusted up to the point of release due to fluctuating market conditions, the person said.

A spokeswoman for Samsung declined to comment. Samsung said in late March that it planned to sell refurbished or rental versions of the Galaxy Note 7 but didn’t specify timing or targeted markets.

Details about the Galaxy Note FE’s release date and pricing were earlier reported by South Korea’s semiofficial Yonhap News agency and local trade media.

Samsung recalled around three million Galaxy Note 7 devices last year after reports of some devices catching fire—a debacle that cost the company at least $5 billion and saw the devices banned on various airlines.

The South Korean company concluded earlier this year that the overheating in some devices came from design and manufacturing problems with the devices’ batteries. According to Samsung, the defect affected 330 out of the three million Note 7 phones that it sold.

Analysts say the revived Note 7 wouldn’t compete with or cannibalize sales of the Galaxy S8, Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone, which was released to much fanfare in April. Unlike the Galaxy S series, the Galaxy Note smartphones feature a larger screen and a stylus, endearing them to a loyal base of fans.

“The Note 7 is a unique product for Samsung,” said Tom Kang, a Seoul-based analyst at Counterpoint Technology Market Research. “This is a product for Note-series fans so it’s going to address a different market segment from the S8.”

Talking Sony Xperia

It was time to replace my Windows Phone & my Asus ZenFone, so in my long standing tradition of trying to have something different I went with a Sony Xperia. So far so good; no major issues. Sony just updated it to Android 7.1.1 so I have to give them kudos for support. Other than being a tad on the expensive side, I am surprised Sony is not more popular in the smartphone market (@ least in the US where I believe T-Mobile has been the only carrier support).

Thinking of taking advantage of the $200 Best Buy gift card offer when you buy an S8 or S8+ ?

$829.99 + $200 BB gift card : Samsung Galaxy S8+ 64GB (Unlocked) Black SM-G955UZKAXAA - Best Buy

Or the "Open-Box Excellent : Product looks brand new and includes all original parts and accessories" version for $741.99 + $200 BB gift card ?

Sony suffers from some of the same problems that plague Acura...

- bland boring designs (IMO)
- poor/lack of marketing
- poor product focus
- behind on tech/features (e.g. no fingerprint scanner)
- easily forgettable model names (random alpha numeric names)
- think they can rely on their company name and past history of success

Then there's also the fact that Sony prefers to sell the phones themselves as opposed to going through the carriers and brick and mortar retailers which is how most people get their phones.

btw, the battery saving mode in medium setting is quite awesome. It disables some stuff that I don't really ever notice (except the always on display, which I can live without), I've seen my phone go under 50% ONCE

Might claim my insurance to replace my Note 4 since I'm rotating 2 batteries and one of them isn't lasting long. I think the replacement is the S7 Edge or I cancel and get like 18 mos premium back. what do you all think?

18 mos premium back?

I thought you have to take a comparable replacement phone for insurance.

How much is 18 months of the premium?

I think a used note 4 is worth...... like $50 you really can't go wrong either way. S7 edge a $600 phone.

Yes I last claimed about 18 mos ago. $8/month but I think it increased to $9 in January. It's like $150 I guess but I need to call and confirm. Ebay has like $175 for used

Never mind. They offered me a Note 5 or an S6 If I could sell a Note 5 for $300 I'd make like $150 so I'd rather just get the premium back for $170 and keep my Note 4 until it craps out. Or snag a phone on a sick deal like around Black Friday and keep my Note 4 as a backup. I had to FIGHT ATT for the $170. They only wanted to give me 1 month. Then 3. Then finally 17 which is what I deserved. I had to paste the legal terms and link to the PDF on their site.

:Lawyered:

Not the first time they tried to dick me. Same thing happened when I cancelled my DirecTV/ATT service at my old house. I saved transcripts and everything. They tried to take me to collections even and I had to pwn them.

Guess I jinxed it but check this out. I was supposed to get a call 20 mins after the chat and it never came. I was thinking uh oh. I chat again today, the conversation was deleted. They had NO RECORD of it. So naturally they fought me and even escalated it to a manager and their compliance. So I'm going to have to report them to BBB and my state AG. I went ahead and claimed the insurance and if approved I'll get an S7 Edge for $112 so not a loss. Anyways I shared this to warn you guys, AT&T has some shady dudes working there.

Hope it works out Doom, good job keeping all the transcripts and everything. That's pretty scary to hear about. As consumers we shouldn't have to worry about getting screwed over, but the fact is that these big corporations can be very shady.

Got my S7 Edge Saturday morning. So small vs my Note 4. Note 4 was a nice robust phone. S7 Edge is more a pretty phone like an iPhone. Checking out Nougat that came installed. It's a nice touch so won't use my Nova Launcher yet.

at 10's or 100's of thousand of OnePlus owners dialing 911 to see if their phone has problem or not.

911 operators are going to be if calls go through and people just hang up or they tell them "Oh, I'm just checking to see if my phone can dial 911 or not"

Anyone else have the buzzing sound and shaky screen when you turn on your camera? (Samsung) The sound lasts between 3-5 secs.

Isn't the buzzing sound something an electronic device makes right before it catches fire and blows up?

[Invitation] Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2017: Do Bigger Things

July 21, 2017

On August 23rd, Samsung Electronics will reveal the latest member of the Galaxy family with the ultimate multitasking device for those who want to do bigger things with their phone.

This highly anticipated addition to the Galaxy roster was specifically designed for people who move through barriers to do more of what matters to them.

To mark the launch of the upcoming device, the company is hosting the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked celebration on August 23, 2017, at Park Avenue Armory in New York City. Doors open at 10 a.m. (EST) while the official event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (EST).

Live streaming of the New York event will be available at http://news.samsung.com, Electronics & Appliances: Tablets, Smartphones, TVs Samsung US and Samsung Mobile press Official website Samsung Mobile Press.

Samsung will reveal the Galaxy Note 8 on August 23rd

Samsung's next large-screened phone is on its way, as invites have just gone out for the company's Unpacked event on August 23rd. A teaser image promises to "Do bigger things," which is about what we'd expect from the followup to last year's Galaxy Note 7 debacle. Rumors indicate that the Galaxy Note 8 we're expecting to see will rock a larger 6.3-inch version of the Galaxy S8's Infinity Display, dual rear cameras and 6GB of RAM.

The most notable change, however, may be the expected smaller battery. Similar to what we've seen in the Galaxy Note 7 Fan Edition rerelease, going with a slightly smaller 3,300mAh unit compared to the 3,500mAh battery pack that shipped in the Note 7 should help avoid problems with overheating and explosions.

The V20 Is an awesome phone despite the only issue I had (which is seldomly), the power button sometimes wont work. I notice it happens when I am running google maps while other apps are still open. Not a concrete way to fix the issue when it occurs, but by pressing the power button and down volume simultaneously until it reacts. FYI

Thanks for the tip. This thing is sexy. Coming from the v10 it's very familiar but there are noticeable differences. So smooth. Very premium type feel.
