Girardi might pull a Torre and dropping ARod in the batting order.

I say they shouldve dropped him from the ALDS roster. Hes a waste of an at bat

That jack-ass owner Lew Wolf wants to move the team out of Oakland to San Jose. He's saying they can't sell tickets in Oakland. If the A's sell out 50K a game, the argument is worthless.

Yeah, have been hearing about this move for a while now. Place would have to be insanely loud if all those were sold out as well.

I really need to go to bed, but this A's game is too close. Dumb play by Stephen Drew...learn not to do that in little league

Anyways, I'm pissed about the Reds game, but was able to pick up two tickets for tomorrow 1 p.m. game for cheap, so ing for the best! I have 10x more confidence in Latos than I do Leake

Doesnt bother me. Been a Yankees fan since I was 5, from a family of Mets fans. My sister and I defected to the "dark side". Im used to the hatred.

Unless the As can really unload on Verlander, I think their season is over.

Verlander was a beast tonight. The only way we were going to beat him was to get his pitch count up so he could be pulled out of the game. The only player that made him work for the outs was Crisp. Hopefully Beane doesn't blow this team up, there is so much to build on. Just a few pieces here and there and this team is set to be a top contender next year.

No energy tonight. Was the least exciting of the last three games. Plus, Verlander was fucking strong every inning. Impressive.

You have no freakin idea

I was about a section over from where Posey's grand slam hit...was like somebody punched everybody in the gut at the same time. If I thought you guys would believe me I'd tell you I predicted that GS right before he hit it. Was the perfect storm that everybody saw coming.

Nobody in the stands could understand why dumbfuck Dusty didn't come to get Latos, or any of the following bonehead plays in the game for those that didn't get to see it:

3. Dusty's latest collapse . . .
You have to feel for Dusty Baker, the veteran Reds manager who took another kick in the gut in the postseason with a third epic collapse with a franchise inside of 11 years. The autopsies read like this:
• Up 5-0 with eight outs to go to win the 2002 World Series, Baker's Giants lose Game 6 to the Angels and then also lose Game 7.
• Up 3-0 with five outs to go to get to the 2003 World Series, Baker's Cubs lose Game 6 to the Florida Marlins, one of three straight losses after being up three 3-games-to-1.
• Tied 1-1 in the sixth inning of NLDS Game 3 -- with a no-hitter intact by his pitcher, Homer Bailey, and a sweep in play -- Baker's Reds become the first NL team to blow a 2-games-to-0 Division Series lead with three straight losses, all of them at home.
(I won't even bring up the year his Giants won 103 games and didn't make the postseason -- the last postseason without wild cards.)
The tally: Baker has played 10 games with a chance to close out a postseason series since 2002 World Series Game 6. His teams are 1-9 in those potential clinchers.
Baker is one of 20 managers to win more than 1,500 major league games. But only two of those 20 prolific winners have never won a World Series: Gene Mauch and Baker.

4. . . .and his role in it
What made the latest Baker loss, a 6-4 defeat to San Francisco in Game 5 on Thursday, so painful is that it called attention to Baker's acumen at running games. Three key moments in the game backfired on him:
• He stayed with Mat Latos too long. Latos came out humming fastballs for strikes. He threw only 16 balls to the first 15 batters. But Latos' reputation for immaturity came into play in a fateful fifth inning. Latos began sulking about some ball-and-strike calls -- so much so that home plate umpire Tom Hallion once walked halfway out to the mound apparently to tell him to cool it. Latos' body language worsened when Zack Cozart bobbled a grounder, costing the Reds an out. I watched Latos after Cozart fumbled with the ball; the pitcher dropped to a knee and stayed there with a pained look on his face, as if he couldn't believe it was happening to him -- rather than telling his teammate he would pick him up.
Latos was gone at that point. He didn't come close to throwing a strike on his next four pitches, walking Marco Scutaro. Pitching coach Brian Price walked out to the mound to try to settle Latos, but it was too late. The next batter, Pablo Sandoval, whistled a single past Cozart. Now the bases were loaded and Buster Posey was up. The sulking about the calls, the error, the walk, the visit, the single . . . it was a steep decline and there was every indication except bells, whistles, alarms and flares that Latos was not surviving this inning. But Baker allowed him to pitch to Posey. It was the at-bat that finished off the Reds. Posey crushed a grand slam with such force that Latos didn't even bother to turn around and watch it. He nearly walked off the field himself as Posey rounded the bases.
• With runners at first and second, no outs, a full count and trailing 6-3 to Matt Cain in the sixth, Baker sent the runners on the pitch. It was a reckless risk on many levels. For one, though the batter, Ryan Hanigan, did ground into a double play earlier in the game, Cain, as usual, was throwing more flyballs than groundballs. The situation did not call for protecting against a groundball with a high-risk play. Also, if Hanigan hits a short pop-up or line drive, it's a triple play and the inning is over.
Baker was counting on Hanigan making contact, but he should know this: Hanigan never grounded into a double play on a full count this year. However, he did strike out eight times in 34 at-bats with a full count -- almost a one in four chance.
Hanigan looked at strike three and Jay Bruce was thrown out.
"You have to push the envelope sometimes," said Bruce, "and it just didn't work out."
• He sent Xavier Paul, a lefthanded hitter, to bat against George Kontos to lead off the seventh inning, down 6-3. Giants manager Bruce Bochy countered with lefty Jeremy Affeldt. Baker had Miguel Cairo and Todd Frazier, both righthanded hitters, on his bench. But Baker left Paul in to bat against Affeldt. Paul was 0-for-3 this year against lefties. Repeat: just 0-for-3. Paul whiffed.
Baker essentially forfeited his leadoff spot in one of his last three innings of the season. Why was he saving players? Cairo, in fact, never did get in the game.

Thank you Tom Verducci for writing this, all though I certainly don't feel sorry for Dusty Baker, worst manager to ever walk the earth

Alex Rodriguez benched for decisive Game 5 vs. Orioles

4:02PM EDT October 12. 2012 - Alex Rodriguez's epic playoff struggles compelled New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi to do what was once unthinkable: bench his $29 million third baseman.

Rodriguez will not start tonight's decisive Game 5 in the American League Division Series, the latest turn in what's been a running postseason soap opera for much of Rodriguez's nine-year stint with the Yankees.

Rodriguez is 2-for-16 with nine strikeouts in the series and has looked particularly bad in the most crucial spots, compelling Girardi to pinch-hit for him in Game 3 and Game 4 of the series.

He's 0-for-11 with nine strikeouts against Baltimore Orioles right-handers in this series.

What's more, Rodriguez's track record in decisive games is about as bad as it can get: 0-for-13 in his career as a Yankee, dating to Game 7 of the 2004 AL Championship Series.

Girardi could not weather such limitations in the late innings of an elimination game.

"I think he's just going through a difficult time," said Girardi, who said he made the decision at 1 p.m. on Friday and informed Rodriguez via telephone. "He's meant a lot to our organization. But he's struggled against right-handers in this series. So I made the decision to start Chavvy today."

Rodriguez sounded a tone of culpability in talking with reporters before Game 5.

"It's never about Joe," Rodriguez said. "I always have to look in the mirror. I've got to do what I can do, whatever I can do, to help the team.

"Don't assume that you've heard the last from us, or me."

Rodriguez has looked particularly bad against the Orioles' late-inning relievers, striking out three times against sidearming Baltimore set-up man Darren O'Day in three of the games. The Game 4 sequence was particularly crucial: O'Day fanned Rodriguez with the potential go-ahead runs on second and third, and the game dragged into extra innings, where Rodriguez was retired by Pedro Strop on a grounder in the 11th.

Chavez will start at third tonight, and bat ninth, with Robinson Cano in Rodriguez's typical third spot. Raul Ibanez gets the start at designated hitter with Derek Jeter able to return to shortstop after a foot injury.

It worked out fine in Game 3, when Ibanez struck a game-tying home run and an eventual walk-off shot. With Ibanez already used in the 13th inning of Wednesday's Game 4, Girardi benched A-Rod again in the key spot, pinch-hitting reserve third baseman Eric Chavez, who lined out to third to end the Orioles' 2-1 victory.

Girardi's action is the most drastic with Rodriguez in A-Rod's Yankee tenure. Former manager Joe Torre caused a considerable stir when he dropped a free-falling Rodriguez to eighth in Game 4 of the 2006 Division Series against the Detroit Tigers.

Now, Rodriguez will get his first look at playoff baseball from the bench.

The only consolation I have right now is that we'll be putting a better team on the field next year. Rolen is 99% retired, so Frazier will be playing every day. Votto should be back to normal. Everybody else of any significance is signed (besides Ludwick, who has an option year). There will be some bullpen changes but that's not a big deal. One has to wonder if they'll put Chapman in the rotation and make Leake another long reliever.

And I'm not the type to spread baseless rumors, but there has been a lot of talk about Larkin becoming the manager. With the hirings of Matheny and Ventura, it's hard to completely dismiss it. I think it's more like wishful thinking, though

3-0 bottom of 7th.

Hopefully that will be enough, it is as many runs as Baltimore has scored this series.
