Classy.

Like a number of athletes, Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar enjoys scribbling fun phrases on his eye black on game day.
But few are laughing after photos surfaced Monday night of the 29-year-old Cuban sporting a gay slur across his cheeks in Spanish during Saturday’s game against Boston. And now MLB is investigating.
The phrase in question — “tu ere maricon” (sic) — can be translated to “you are a (gay slur).” Jays fan @james_in_to captured a photo of the phrase from behind the dugout during the game (via Big League Stew).
MLB spokesman Pat Courtney confirmed to the Associated Press that the commissioner’s office is investigating the reports.
“The club takes this situation seriously and is investigating the matter,” the Blue Jays said in a statement Monday night, adding they “do not support discrimination of any kind nor condone the message displayed by Yunel Escobar during Saturday’s game.”
The incident comes just two weeks after Maryland Delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr. (D-Baltimore County) blasted Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo for his unabashed support of the organization Marylanders for Marriage Equality.
Burns immediately faced a tidal wave of backlash, and few critics were as vocal as Vikings punter Chris Kluwe, who wrote Burns a letter, bashing his “vitriolic hatred and bigotry.” Burns later backtracked from his remarks, deciding that “upon reflection, (Ayanbadejo) has First Amendment rights.”
When the photos of Escobar’s eye black surfaced, Kluwe was once again quick to express his disapproval.
Too bad to hear about Yunel Escobar. "Gay" is not something to be ashamed or insulted by, no matter what language you use. #equalityforall

Whether Escobar’s eye black was part of an ill-conceived prank, as former Blue Jays pitcher Dirk Hayhurst suggested, or a serious case of poor taste, there is simply no place for this in the game. And when Escobar faces the media before Toronto faces the Yankees tonight in New York, he’ll no doubt be asked to explain himself.
Whatever his explanation, Doug Smith of the Toronto Star believes Escobar deserves a stiff penalty for what he deemed a “senseless, vile, wrong, inflammatory” act. Smith wrote:
What he did was so ridiculous it almost defies logic; I honestly can’t think what he was thinking and it will be interesting to hear what he says. And he has to speak to it and his actions, it has to be more than some scripted apology read off a piece of paper and I’m not even sure genuine contrition will be enough. There is no logical explanation but fans are owed an attempt at least.
Should MLB suspend Escobar? If so, for how long?

congrats...I guess Jayson Werth WASN'T a sellout for going to the Nationals from the Phillies to "win"
OMG i hate that the Phillies are this good this late in the season...what a waste...the Phillies' top players CAN'T get hit with the injury bug again next year.

Damn Royals.

Yeah I saw they clobbered the Mets last night. It's been nice having him here, he's been good for the young players we have.

And 3/4 is surprising for a Thursday game, I can see it happening on a weekend. I'd say the stadium was half Reds fans when I was up there in August for two games (Friday Saturday).

Im very pissed I had to go to work. I left with the score still tied at 5 in the 10th.

I watched some of the highlights. After the 3rd homer (4th run) in the 13th, the announcers were giddy and started talking about Girardi. I couldn't help but laugh.
I will say this though, that was a hell of a play by Ross to get Mesa out at home (swat the ball, bobble, spin, make accurate throw). Granted, it never shouldve happened had Mesa stepped on third on ARods hit

I miss Jonny Gomes jacking bombs for the Reds I think him and Cespedes have two of the quickest swings in the game...I think I watched the replay of their homers ten times each
EDIT: Woot for clinching

Is anybody up to date with this years playoff setup? I found the following quote on Wikipedia but of course there's no source tied to it, however I've heard this scenario is true.
So if true, does anybody else think it's stupid? The two lower seeds getting the first two home games ? I consider having the first game at home, home field advantage
So as it stands right now the Reds would play two in SF and the Nats would play two in either ATL or STL.
And NY would play two in CHI and TEX would play two against the O's or A's.

With the adoption of the expanded playoff format in 2012, the five-game Division Series will begin with two home games for lower seeds, followed by up to three home games for higher seeds. This one-year change will eliminate a travel day prior to a decisive Game 5 of a Division Series and was necessary because the 2012 regular-season schedule was announced before the agreement on the new postseason was reached. For 2013, the Division Series could return to the 2-2-1 format used in previous years.

I've looked around more and this seems to be correct
You could argue that the 1 and 3 seeds are the best to get, since 1 gets the "lesser" wildcard team and 3 gets to play the first two games at home, leaving the 2 seed fucked over

The guys calling the Reds game on ESPN said the exact same thing about the 3 seed being the best this year
And speaking of, nice of the Reds to run out another AAA lineup for a nationally televised game

Pfft, Oakland's been doing that all season. As it stands now nearly our entire pitching staff is a bunch of rookies. It's been working great for us so far!

Well we don't have to do it out of necessity
I understand that they're trying to rest guys and all that, but damn, we already get zero exposure as it is. Might as well "dress to impress" when you get the chance.
Anyways, good luck to you guys. I've always been a casual fan of the A's

Guillen is a good manager...hell, he helped the ChiSox break their curse drought. So, he's gotta be good for something.
But, in the last couple of years...he's gone completely batsh*t crazy.

One on the right for me
I like the radio announcer in today's game mentioning that it was just another typical Oakland outing...holding their own against Texas with 15 strikeouts...

I wish Jim Tracy would stick around, it's our GM Dan O'Dowd who has caused us so many problems over the years. That said, our stupid new piggyback pitching system is awful, as are almost all of our starting pitchers.

Yeah they said they were just a few behind the Rays or whatever team set the record in 2008. No doubt it will be broken tomorrow. Still hoping for a win.

Yeah, I've heard weird things about O'Dowd before. And I read a little something about the piggyback experiment early in the season. Can't see why that failed
