Devils sale could come soon
The New Jersey Devils could be under the control of a new owner in the near future. That owner won't be the NHL.
The New Jersey Devils could be sold in the next few days, according to a report by Tom Guilitti of The Bergen Record on Thursday afternoon.
Guilitti's account comes hours after Forbes reported that the NHL was poised to take over operational control of the Devils prior to the start of the 2013-14 season. Forbes' report also indicated that the league would run the franchise while the search for a new owner was conducted.
Apparently, the NHL running the club might be an avoidable option.
Guilitti tweeted that groups headed by Andrew Barroway and Philadelphia 76ers owner Joshua Harris are both involved in or already have placed a bid on the team. Harris' bid was reported on by Howard Eskin of Fox 29 on Wednesday.
The franchise is currently owned and operated by Jeff Vanderbeek. Previous accounts state that club possesses $230 million of debt, owes the NHL approximately $25 million and is projected to have a $55 million payroll for next season. Other accounts state that Barroway withdrew a bid within the last two weeks after viewing the franchises' books.
The NHL denied that they are intending to take over control of the Devils.
