Sidney Crosby looked good for a guy with a surgically repaired jaw.
That was Penguins general manager Ray Shero's summation on Sunday after visiting the injured Penguins captain in UPMC Presbyterian, Oakland.
“They did a great job on him, I thought,” Shero said. “He lost some teeth, but he was in good spirits — already texting some of the guys about the game Saturday.”
Crosby played only one shift of the Penguins' 2-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday afternoon in Consol Energy Center. He left after a shot by Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik was deflected and hit him flush in the mouth.
Shero said Crosby is out indefinitely, although his jaw is not wired shut, and he was drinking nutritional shakes and taking visits from teammates.
Dr. Bernard Costello performed the surgery on Saturday night.
Crosby had not exhibited signs of concussion symptoms, Shero said.
Before this NHL season, Crosby played in just 63 regular-season games from Jan. 6, 2011, to March 15, 2012, because of two concussion-related absences.
He was the NHL's top scorer with 56 points before games played on Sunday.
The Penguins are the NHL's hottest team, winners of 15 games in a row. They can take sole possession of the league's second-best winning streak with a victory against Buffalo on Tuesday night.
The NHL record is 17, set by the Penguins in 1993.
The Stanley Cup playoffs are scheduled for April 30, and Shero would not speculate on Crosby's availability.
Shero said he does not expect to make another trade before Wednesday's NHL deadline.
“How do you replace Sid, honestly?” Shero said.
Crosby has missed 129 regular-season games because of significant injuries during the past five seasons — 28 because of an ankle injury in 2007-08 and 101 because of concussion symptoms from the 2010-11 through 2011-12 seasons.
The Penguins' record is 77-39-13 in those games.
