Shanny's working overtime. I think this may actually be one of the most dangerous hits he has suspended someone for (or had the most potential to cause serious harm). I'm kinda surprised how short it is which leads me to believe if your forearm brushes someones head you get suspended 8 games. If let the arena do the dirty work, you only get 2. His fine for this one is $5,945.94 based on his average annual salary.

Thanks for taking off Ben Smith's head last night, Brendan Smith.
Hope Commish Shanny sends you to a nice long time-out.

No doubt it's a dirty hit. I never questioned that. I just think it's a more dangerous hit and had more potential to cause injury than some of the "target headshots" we've seen get longer suspensions from Shanny. I fear that many dangerous hits will go under punished because the hitter didn't contact his opponents head.

TORONTO -- The lawyer for an Ontario man accused of throwing a banana at a black hockey player says his client had no idea his actions could be seen as racist.
Faisal Joseph says Chris Moorhouse was caught up in the drama of a tense game featuring his favourite hockey team and threw the fruit in hopes of preventing the winning goal.
Moorhouse has admitted to throwing a banana at Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds, but Joseph says his client was unaware of the racial overtones of his actions.
Joseph says Moorhouse is "mortified" and deeply remorseful for the incident and fears it has clouded the reputation of his family and home town.
Moorhouse has been charged under Ontario's Trespass to Property Act and faces a maximum fine of $2,000.
London police say Moorhouse's alleged actions did not meet the test for a hate crime or a mischief charge.

So Shanny has given out 7 suspensions so far this preseason....Brendan Smith will be number 8.
A grand total of 38 suspensions were given out over the entire season last year (including pre-season)
Shanny is well on his way to a record breaker this season!!!
Seeing that last season there was only 1 preseason suspension....run the numbers...at this pace we will have over 300 suspensions this season!!!!!
10 games (plus first round of playoffs) was the longest suspension last season.
Shanny has already thrown down an 8 gamer.
Oh Shanny.....

I was thinking about that earlier today. Part of me says its about time.
Part of me thinks he's going overboard. But he's doing what was being asked for by most fans and media. Be interesting to see how this ends up.

About time.
I think the number of suspensions will reduce given how the entire League is seeing how Shanny is running an essentially zero-tolerance policy...Players will smarten up.

The Los Angeles Kings announced Thursday night that they have reached verbal agreement on a multiyear contract with restricted free-agent defenseman Drew Doughty,
The 21-year-old had 11 goals and 40 points last season, a comedown from 2009-10 when he finished with 16 goals and 59 points, and was a finalist for the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defensemen.

Then, those fans enjoy seeing players continue to fall like flies in the NHL.
The sizzle in the Steak
Nobody enjoys seeing players get cheapshot injuries. Be serious.
Fans will get upset over inconsistent discipline and over-the-top suspension & fines.
You said before that if the NHL was explicitly clear on rules and disciplinary action, then you feel the cheapshots will go away.
The NHL and Shanny's approach is fluid. It's a case by case scenario....not explicitly clear. One guy will get one game for a hit that injures, while another guy will get 8 games for a hit that does not injure...etc and so on.

I know there is no immediate fix to this problem in the League. But, all I'm saying is that this is the first time in ever that the League is finally doing something CONSISTENTLY about it.
I still want the rules to be adjusted, equipment changed, and perhaps, even (pipedream) the move to International rink-sizes...
The sizzle in the Steak
Well, I think Shanny is pretty consistent, is he not...? So, from a disciplinary perspective, so far so good...

Take it from Shanny himself:
Repeat offenders like Wisniewski and the Flyers’ Jody Shelley, whom Shanahan suspended five games for a check from behind, will be dealt with strictly, he said. Players with a clean record will get some leeway. But only once.
“It’s very important to note that Brad Boyes has never been suspended in his entire N.H.L. career,” Shanahan said in the video explaining his two-game suspension of Buffalo’s Boyes for a nondeliberate but still “reckless” shoulder to the head of Toronto’s Joe Colborne.
But, Shanahan added, “Going forward, he will be considered a repeat offender.”

There are multiple standards at play here. Inconsistency galore
So a clean record player can choose to flat out destroy another player with a cheapshot to the head, injure said player...and walk away with a game or two suspension.
Meanwhile a repeat offender who has incidental contact to the head of another player which results in no injury will get +8 games suspension.

^^ No doubt, but Shanny's approach does not solve the problem.
The NHL will still be inconsistent with it's approach to cheapshot hits.
There is no set standard, and that is a problem.

But repeat offenders should be treaty more harshly. If that's the only problem you can find with Shanny, then you haven't found a problem at all.
We can agree that what he's doing has never been done before, lets give it a chance and see if he can clean up the game.

I dunno...Maybe Waldorf is ranting about this right now because he knows Mikey Richards is bound to do one of those "cute" hits and is leery of a major suspension...!
I think I've figured it out.

I hope Shanny's policy proves me wrong, but I fear it will end in a big mess.....and it will all be re-addressed/fixed after the lock-out no season year.
