For ratings, hockey still ranks far, far below the NFL, MLB, and NBA in the US. It also ranks below bowling and poker.

The whole sport in general...theres fights breaking out in games, players can say whatever they want on the ice or even on camera. On the other hand theres the NBA which takes it to the extreme, you cant even critisize a foul call without being fined. Somewhere between the 2 would be a good compromise. And I know basketballs not a contact sport but its so damn slow these days with all the touchy fouls

The NBA makes way more money than the NHL ever will therefore players will always be paid more.

You're kidding, right...? The # of NBA players running into trouble with the law is exponentially greater than in hockey.

As well, in hockey, you have what is universally agreed as the most accessible and down-to-earth athletes in all of pro sports. You're more likely to find a diva-type in the NBA than in the NHL...

Not sure what you mean by classless...

2 days ago I was listening to ESPN on XM and they were talking about some NBA player who made $14 million per year and has nothing to show for it. It was pretty sad....the guy defaulted on numerous loans, he had multiple properties that he got foreclosed on. He would throw lavish parties and many, many people on his "payroll". Once he ran out of money, he ran out of friends/people on his "payroll".

It was pretty scary....

Not sure I'd go as far to say its classless but I agree that the NHL needs far better policing and and punishment processes.

Sadly, it's true......nobody in the U.S. watches/cares.

Although these rating are good for hockey, they are a joke in terms of what U.S. sports fans watch for a finals.

These ratings are not even close to the worst ratings for NBA, MLB, finals/world series.

The best NHL ratings in the U.S. is not even near the worst ratings for the NBA, MLB, NFL.

Wednesday's decisive Game 6 earned a 4.7 rating.....
The NHL still can't match the other major pro sports leagues in U.S. viewership. According to Nielsen, the record-low rating for a World Series game is a 6.1 and for an NBA finals game a 5.2.
http://www.nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/37...ns/sports-nhl/

Spelling Bee more popular than the NHL....in the U.S.
The spelling bee drew an average of 4 million viewers on ABC while the Philadelphia Flyers’ 5-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Versus attracted 3.1 viewers (American households only).

That's because the one's that play the game can't leave the game in the game. The rules have been put in place because the NBA doesn't want the ghetto on the court and on TV. Sadly those playing the game are still just punks playing street ball getting paid millions to do so.

Sure it is...but a lot of this has to do with the teams being from 2 major markets.

If Chicago or Philly were playing let's say Phoenix, San Jose, Montreal, Tampa Bay.....the ratings would be horrible.

To say people in the U.S. care about the NHL is laughable.

....and Bettman does not care about this, and does nothing to try to grow the sport as well as he could here in the U.S.

8.28 million viewers watched the Game 6 Stanely Cup Finals

by comparison

About 13 million people tuned in to watch the U.S. vs England in the World Cup.

...and the U.S. cares virtually NOTHING about soccer and the World Cup.

not sure if this is old news
The Toronto Maple Leafs are putting the C on defenceman Dion Phaneuf.

He had 10 points in 26 games with the Leafs last season.

The 25-year-old Phaneuf was acquired last January in a blockbuster deal with the Calgary Flames.

Head coach Ron Wilson has said the blue-liner had a major influence on the team's young locker-room after his arrival.

Toronto hasn't had a captain since Mats Sundin left the team in the summer of 2008.

The Maple Leafs finished last in the Eastern Conference last season with 74 points.

But, maybe he's matured quite a bit in Toronto.

Not sure what to think. Don't really care either. Start fawking winning. Who cares about who captains a 29th place team.

And this was decided about 3 minutes after Dion's plane landed in Toronto after the trade. Its been talked about since.

Right now...? Do you really want them to...? I'd say another couple of years of tanking to accumulate high picks would be the ticket.

They don't have a 1st rd pick for the next 2 years. Burke has clearly chosen to go in another direction as far as team building goes. So at this point let him try it his way. If it doesn't work (more like when) Fire his ass and start the process all over again.

Eventually I'm sure they'll get someone in here who will build from the draft. I'll probably be dead, but it will happen.

My team does not give away draft picks like they were free passes...so there.

Does the Leafs have the space to sign a Marleau/Kovalchuk type player...?

There was a story in the news about when Phaneuf joined the Leafs at the first practice the first thing he did when he walked into the room was change the music and "take charge". Instead of doing things to be accepted by the group, he decided to alienate them with his first impression.

The guy is overrated and has a huge ego. He bought into everything people were saying about him in his early years and got got big headed. Plus, hooking up with that hollywood chick didn't help in that respect.

Don't think so. They have a few mill to spend but can't take on a 6-7 mill guy unless they dump salary. But I'm not sure exactly how close they are to the cap.

May hinge on what happens to Kaberle, probably then.

Well, I'm assuming lots will happen in the next coming days leading up to the draft...
