FWIW, we kinda knew the style the US was going to play with who they picked. Backes, Kesler and etc. are all types who will make you remember at the corners...

I would not say the hits were cheap per se though. But, the US is definitely amped up and ready to go to war.

I dunno, the highlights I saw were pretty dirty, Kesler getting ejected for a boarding, and a number of other borderline hits...

That's...Kesler being Kesler. I mean, I dunno...I don't think Torts has a rep for goon-squading his teams? He's got his shenanigans with the press and all but I don't think he's that sort.

It was a definite street-fight...for an exhibition game, I don't think we've ever seen anything like it. Gotta give Toews credit for jumping Kesler though. If there was ever any doubt of how he's team-first, that was it. Glad he's a Blackhawk.

The Canada v Russia game was pretty boring last night. Glad I didn't drop $300 on tickets or I would have been pissed.

1-0 until late in the third, then they told the goalies to quit stopping pucks and it ended up tied 2-2 to give the fans OT

Definitely wasn't as thrilling as they billed it up to be

The Canadian roster is simply invincible, i.e:

Patrice Bergeron, Sidney Crosby, Ryan Getzlaf, Claude Giroux, Brad Marchand, Corey Perry; Tyler Seguin, Steven Stamkos, John Tavares, Jonathan Toews, Joe Thornton.

Defensemen:

Jay Bouwmeester,Brent Burns, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Shea Weber.

Goaltenders:

Corey Crawford, Braden Holtby, Carey Price.

It feels like when the NBA dream team were allowed to play the Olympics.

Sort of, Segs plays for an actual NHL team with higher aspirations than a good draft pick next summer. It's really just Canadian teams whose players are supposed to get hurt, and maybe anyone whose off season training routine includes rape

I thought Seguin only had a hairline fracture on his heel? I'm no doctor but I'd think all he'd miss is training camp. Guys come back from a broken leg in about 6-8 weeks (lower leg, not the femur).

Oh okay okay...sorry, I forgot...you were hoping for career-ending or season-ending injuries. Got it.

Sorry, disregard my stupid post (cuz, that's all I do, right?) about Seguin.

@ Team USA...

Well, most hockey observers had a right to question the Yanks' choice of players. I mean, Abdelkader, Backes, Jack Mudderfawking-Johnson, Dubinsky, and etc. are GOOD players...but, when you're showcasing the best talent and it's mostly speed speed speed and skill...going with sandpaper/grinder-types like those does not exactly help.

And oh, Finlandia just lost to the Swedes. They meant to do that.

Bringing in Torts to be the bench boss was always a weird gambit...The US players are thinking even if they lost, the blame would go to him anyways. So, all in all, was not going to pan out well, IMO.

I personally don't mind Torts as a coach. But, you had to think his past baggage would be a factor.

When the US built this squad and gave it this grinder mentality, they already were at a disadvantage against the hockey powerhouses. This is not the same team that lost to the Beavers in the Olympics and etc. They have to re-evaluate. Although, the kids in the NA squad from the US are very promising and hopefully they will be on the roster for the next international tourney for the Yanks. But, yeah...some of the choices for the WCH team are just terrible. How can the likes of Palmieri, Backes, et al come even close to the skill you see on the Beavers?

The issue wasn't Torts' coaching so much as it was his choice of players and roster IMHO

Yup. Agree. Only so much a grinder-type can do against player after player that can skate and dangle circles around them.

How can you hit someone you can't catch?

Phil Kessel delivers death blow Tweet after USA loss

By Jen Neale20 hours agoView photo

.
ARLINGTON, VA – AUGUST 27: (EDITORS NOTE: This image has been retouched at the request of USA Hockey.) Phil Kessel poses after being named a candidate for the 2014 USA Hockey Olympic Team at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex on August 27, 2013 in Arlington, Virginia. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)Just minutes after Team USA let out a big old, wet fart against Team Canada, an American hero took to social media to express his thoughts.

That man is Phil Kessel.

In the immortal words of Mortal Kombat: FINISH HIM.

Follow
Phil Kessel
@PKessel81Just sitting around the house tonight w my dog. Felt like I should be doing something important, but couldn't put my finger on it.

10:52 PM - 20 Sep 2016

BOOM! PHILBERT WITH THE WIN.

That is what the kids refer to nowadays as shade.

Kessel, as many have noted, was not included on the first round of Team USA hockey invites for the World Cup. He wasn’t on the second round either. He wasn’t an injury replacement. Finally he seemed to take himself out the running by having surgery on his hand after he hoisted the Stanley Cup over his head.

For whatever reason, the brass at USA Hockey (or maybe Dean Lombardi?) just didn’t want to include Phil in the World Cup of Hockey team from the get go.

Perhaps he lacked the grit and tenacity the team was looking for? Well, their plan went over real well. Now they look even more like a-holes for getting surreptitiously called out by one of the best American talents.

USA Hockey, you just got Phil-Kwan-Doh’ed.
