The Red Wings are Officially Done Selling Hockey - Winging It In Motown
Since the Wings fell in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Penguins in 2009, they haven’t made it past the second round of the playoffs. It’s reasonable to believe that the idea of building a new arena was already in the works as they headed into the 2010 season, due to the fact that in-depth details of the $650 million structure were announced early in the summer of 2013.
Since this time, Holland hasn’t produced a single trade or free agent signing of any relevant magnitude (sorry, David Legwand). He knew he had a team that was good enough to get to the playoffs, and that’s what the team has been selling the past six years – the chance to see a team with an incredible postseason streak. Holland also knows that because of the four Stanley Cups he’s won in this city, his reputation would buy him an overload of patience from the Detroit faithful, allowing the team to remain stagnant while the fans continue to give him the benefit of the doubt because of his history.
His job was simple: Get the team to the playoffs until the final season at The Joe, so the team can have something to sell. It’s a brilliant tactic, really, and one that the Red Wings can afford to implore. If not for the streak, what entertainment experience would the Red Wings have been able to sell? The team plays a rather boring style of hockey; it’s slow, low-scoring, nonphysical, and appears as if all they’re trying to do is ‘contain’ the opposition.

Definitely a great game from start to finish, the first 10 mins was all Pens, then the Caps pushed back. The second and third were just insane entertaining hockey up and down the ince. Hate to lose on a flukey goal like that at the end, but it's only 1 game. I expect this one to go 6 or 7

Flukey goals are standard operating procedure in playoff OT. Based on the game I was watching, this wasn't going to be an epic multi overtime battle, this was going to be a "who's goalie gets screwed first" ending.
It's going to be interesting, IMO neither team really has the intangible players who make cups happen and my opinion of the caps leadership is about the same as my opinion of the pens leadership yet one of them will advance to the next round based on sheer firepower.

Gosh, thanks for reading the Detroit hockey blogs, that means you care. 
It's easy to play armchair GM, and I've done my fair share. We could critique all 30 and have spitting contests till domcha and moogelino return from their graves, but its all a moot point, we are spectators. In the post cap era, at the risk of stating the obvious, building a consistent winner is tough to do. Chicago shoved all in this year and yet they are out in the first round, same with NY Cabbies who mortgaged their future. Lots of decent teams already sitting on the sidelines.
Do you really expect a competitive owner such is Mr. Pizza Pizza to tell his GM to tank and rebuild? It's not in his nature, nor are their any guarantees that a tear down will work out in a timely fashion. Look at how long franchises that do so wander in the wilderness for an extended duration and creep back and yet never touch the cup.
It's not as if Detroit is far away from being back in contention with some modest tweaking. They were not blown out in the series, as it was closer than it looked. They were tied going into the 3rd period of each game and I believe outshot them in 4 of the 5.
Holland deserves some criticism for extended contract length, overpaying and loyalty to a fault for "character" in the locker room. But there's a legit argument that team chemistry is one of the toughest things to build in a winning franchise. Everyone in the league is copying each other and looking for the same sauce, solid goaltending, puck moving D, big forwards who play both ways, yada yada.
If it was easy to be in the playoffs with a chance to advance in the postseason for 25yrs, everyone would be doing it...

What I warned of was selling the streak not the product. The B's did it too, eventually you have to deal for some top picks or lose to earn them.

I danced like the Hawks won the Cup...the Oilers are NOT getting the 1st overall pick. THANK THE GODS. 
My season is complete. I honestly would've rather watched Trump be sworn in as the US President than see Edmonton get another #1 overall pick.
