The deflections were always a penalty since the delay of game rule was put in. obviously there are some guys talented enough to pick a puck out of the air and tip it into the stands but mostly it's accidental and the real delay of game is caused by the refs trying to decide if it's a penalty.
In terms of defining a shot, if a player deflects the puck into the goal, it's credited as a shot on goal in the stats

Someone on the B's got called on it the first year of the rule. I remember thinking, "that's not a penalty, he deflected it, he didn't shoot it" but the refs interpreted the book differently than I did.

Refs don't follow the rule book anyway

Any San Jose fans here? Anyone see Roman Polak get CREAMED by Darnell Nurse last night?
It seems there's only one camera angle for the fight and everyone is saying that Darnell should have been called the "instigator", since it happened in the last 2 minutes of the game, but, that never happened.
Lots of upset fans, especially from San Jose. The attack was seen as retaliation. Even I was like "wtf Darnell..."
BUT, he never got the instigator penalty. Refs never handed it down on him. And it now seems that those who were actually in the area and could see what happened claim that Roman Polak started it, with light jabs with his gloves still on. Nurse dropped the gloves and utterly destroyed Polak. He didn't even see it coming.
That wasn't a fight. That was a "your mother and your dead grandma are going to feel the pain of my fist landing on your face."
Darnell will likely get a one game suspension. And I'm okay with that. Because he sent out a clear message last night- "the Oilers aren't going to take anyone's $hit anymore." A bunch of bigger boys on the team now, who happen to be sticking up for everyone. I like it.

Well Nurse is having a hearing but the incredible writers at NHL.com make no mention of whether it's in person or a phone hearing.
I don't see this being any different than Thornton v Orpik. Both cases were retaliation for a previous hit, both were against an unwilling opponent. Being that it's the department of player safety, I expect a completely reasonable decision in line with previous infractions.

Either way, I do believe he will be suspended at least one game. No biggie. The season is done for the Oilers anyway, so they can essentially count this as a longer "preseason" before October rolls around
There are quite a few people around here who were not happy with Nurse's actions, however, those same people are happy it happened under the given situation the Oilers are in. I dunno if that makes any sense, but the Oilers were getting trampled for the last 6 years. Now it's like "backoff".
Trolling Canuckistan
They aren't having a hearing for being an instigator, he's having the hearing for rule 46.2 "aggressor". He's not in trouble for instigating, he's in trouble for fighting a defenseless or unwilling combatant.
Team Owner
Which makes no sense. Are two guys supposed to stand there, agree to terms, draft up a contract, wish each other luck and then fight?
IF Polak jabbed Nurse, it's fair game. I'm sure Polak has beaten the shit out of enough guys on the ice. IF he was calling out Nurse, he got what he deserved. It's not Nurse's fault Polak wasn't ready.

Meanwhile, Rinaldo and Liles are still trying to kill people... Typical Bruins
Trolling Canuckistan
The liles hearing is bullshit. When you try to duck between 2 players at the last second while crossing the blue line, it's your fault for ducking the head. Liles was coming in elbows down for a clean hit and kucherov ducked right into him.
Kucherov made a sudden elevation change with his head just prior to contact.

3 for Nurse and multiple camera angles in the suspension video. He jumped him when he was going for a line change.

Obama Taunts Canadian PM: 'Where's The Stanley Cup Right Now?': Chicagoist
Obama Taunts Canadian PM: 'Where's The Stanley Cup Right Now?'
by Emma G. Gallegos in Arts & Entertainment on Mar 10, 2016 2:08 pm
When the Blackhawks came to visit the White House last month, President Barack Obama joked that he wanted to keep it around to show off for the Canadians.
The Stanley Cup did not stick around, but that didn't stop Obama from rubbing the Blackhawks' championship in the face of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was in D.C. for a visit. Obama went in hard repping two things that Chicagoans in particular are proud of: the Blackhawks win and their beer scene.
"Now I don't want to gloss over the very real differences between American and Canadians. There are some things we will probably never agree upon: whose beer is better, who is better at hockey..."
Trudeau mutters, "Don't get me started..."
"Where's the Stanley Cup right now?" Obama taunts. The crowd reacts, but he won't let up. "I'm sorry is it in my hometown with the Chicago Blackhawks?"
Here's the exchange:
Of course there were more serious issues on the agenda. Trudeau's visit marks the first time in 19 years that we've received an official visit from Canada. The pair announced an agreement this morning between the two countries to fight climate change, according to the New York Times. The agreement centers on methane emissions, which is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. (The Times says it's unlikely Obama will be able to push all the regulations promised in the agreement before his term is up.)

I hope Nurse does it again when they play San Jose on the 24th.

Ok, I concede. Suspension was justified. I finally found a decent angle and I admit, I was wrong.
Uh oh... I think I just opened a black spiraling vortex of doom in the NHL section. No one ever admits they're wrong here. RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!

But at least it was nice to watch the Oilers make it just a little bit more difficult for Minnesota to squeeze into the playoffs, last night.

No one has to admit they were wrong here, we only need to admit that we aren't moog

Hmmm... I'm familiar with moog, but I'm guessing there's more to this story than my short tenure here is aware of.

I feel the need...
Wings haven't won in Philly since winning the cup in '98. Not feeling stellar about their chances this year of extending the postseason run to 25yrs.

Went to the oilers game last night.
Got free tickets. Sat in the "silver" section.
Cost of 2 tickets and 8 beers (4 each) would have cost $500. The oilers are the worst team, ten years straight, at the end of the season (for them), and the place was STILL 80% packed with people, paying outrageous sums for tickets and whatever else. I'm almost certain every seat was sold, people just didn't want to show up.
Can't blame them. Oilers lost 3-2

The good ol' days of when we actually got to hang banners... the arena has only 5 games remaining in it, before they Oilers move to the new one.
